ג׳:א׳ וְאֵ֛לֶּה תּוֹלְדֹ֥ת אַהֲרֹ֖ן וּמֹשֶׁ֑ה בְּי֗וֹם דִּבֶּ֧ר יְהוָ֛ה אֶת־מֹשֶׁ֖ה בְּהַ֥ר סִינָֽי׃

3:1 This is the line of Aaron and Moses at the time that the LORD spoke with Moses on Mount Sinai.

3:1 Now these are the generations of Aaron and Moses in the day that the LORD spoke with Moses in mount Sinai.

ג׳:א׳ וְאִלֵּין תּוּלְדַת אַהֲרֹן וּמשֶׁה בְּיוֹמָא דְּמַלִּיל יְיָ עִם משֶׁה בְּטוּרָא דְסִינָי:

ואלה תולדת אהרן ומשה. וְאֵינוֹ מַזְכִּיר אֶלָּא בְנֵי אַהֲרֹן וְנִקְרְאוּ תוֹלְדוֹת מֹשֶׁה, לְפִי שֶׁלִּמְּדָן תּוֹרָה, מְלַמֵּד שֶׁכָּל הַמְלַמֵּד אֶת בֶּן חֲבֵרוֹ תּוֹרָה מַעֲלֶה עָלָיו הַכָּתוּב כְּאִלּוּ יְלָדוֹ (סנהדרין י"ט):

ביום דבר ה' את משה. נַעֲשׂוּ אֵלּוּ הַתּוֹלָדוֹת שֶׁלּוֹ, שֶׁלִּמְּדָן מַה שֶּׁלָּמַד מִפִּי הַגְּבוּרָה:

ג׳:א׳ אור החיים

1תּוֹלְדֹת אַהֲרֹן וּמֹשֶׁה וְגוֹ׳. וְלֹא מָנָה אֶלָּא תּוֹלְדוֹת אַהֲרֹן, לוֹמַר כִּי בְּנֵי אַהֲרֹן יֵחָשְׁבוּ עַל מֹשֶׁה לְצַד שֶׁהוּא הִתְפַּלֵּל בַּעֲדָם וְחָיוּ, דִּכְתִיב (דברים ט:כ) ״וּבְאַהֲרֹן הִתְאַנַּף ה׳ לְהַשְׁמִידוֹ״ וְגוֹ׳, וְאָמְרוּ זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה (ויקרא רבה ז:א) שֶׁהוֹעִילָה תְּפִלָּתוֹ לְהַצִּיל אֶלְעָזָר וְאִיתָמָר.

תולדות אהרן ומשה, descendants of Aaron and Moses, etc. Curiously, the Torah enumerates only Aaron's descendants. This is to tell us that they were considered as if they had been Moses' descendants seeing he had prayed on their behalf as we know from Deuteronomy 9,20 where G'd is reported as having been angry at Aaron, ready to exterminate him. This would have resulted in his remaining two sons dying. Our sages in Vayikra Rabbah 7,1 say that Moses' prayer helped to keep Eleazar and Ittamar alive.

2וְאָמְרוֹ בְּיוֹם דִּבֶּר וְגוֹ׳, לוֹמַר זְמַן שֶׁהִתְפַּלֵּל עֲלֵיהֶם, וְכָלַל עוֹד בָּזֶה סִבַּת קַבָּלַת תְּפִלָּתוֹ שֶׁהוּא לְצַד שֶׁדִּבֶּר ה׳ אֵלָיו בְּהַר סִינַי וְנַעֲשָׂה צִיר נֶאֱמָן לַה׳ בְּקַבָּלַת הַתּוֹרָה:

Our verse continues ביום דבר ה׳, to tell us precisely when Moses prayed on their behalf. There is also a hint here of the reason that his prayer was effective as the Torah's mention of Mount Sinai is a reminder that he was such a loyal representative of G'd that he had been found worthy to receive the Torah on Mount Sinai.

ג׳:ב׳ וְאֵ֛לֶּה שְׁמ֥וֹת בְּֽנֵי־אַהֲרֹ֖ן הַבְּכ֣וֹר ׀ נָדָ֑ב וַאֲבִיה֕וּא אֶלְעָזָ֖ר וְאִיתָמָֽר׃

3:2 These were the names of Aaron’s sons: Nadab, the first-born, and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar;

3:2 And these are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the first-born, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.

ג׳:ב׳ וְאִלֵּין שְׁמָהַת בְּנֵי אַהֲרֹן בּוּכְרָא נָדָב וַאֲבִיהוּא אֶלְעָזָר וְאִיתָמָר:

ג׳:ג׳ אֵ֗לֶּה שְׁמוֹת֙ בְּנֵ֣י אַהֲרֹ֔ן הַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים הַמְּשֻׁחִ֑ים אֲשֶׁר־מִלֵּ֥א יָדָ֖ם לְכַהֵֽן׃

3:3 those were the names of Aaron’s sons, the anointed priests who were ordained for priesthood.

3:3 These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the priests that were anointed, whom he consecrated to minister in the priest’s office.

ג׳:ג׳ אִלֵּין שְׁמָהַת בְּנֵי אַהֲרֹן כָּהֲנַיָּא דְּאִתְרַבִּיאוּ דִּי אִתְקָרַב קֻרְבַּנְהוֹן לְשַׁמָּשָׁא:

1אֵלֶּה שְׁמוֹת וְגוֹ׳ הַמְּשֻׁחִים וְגוֹ׳. חָזַר לוֹמַר אֵלֶּה שְׁמוֹת פַּעַם שְׁנִיָּה, וְלֹא הִסְפִּיק בְּמַה שֶׁאָמַר בְּפַעַם רִאשׁוֹנָה ״אֵלֶּה שְׁמוֹת״ וְגוֹ׳ וְלִגְמֹר אוֹמֶר הַמְּשֻׁחִים וְגוֹ׳, נִתְכַּוֵּן לְמַעֵט שֶׁלֹּא נִמְשְׁחוּ אֶלָּא אֵלּוּ, וְלָזֶה דִּקְדֵּק לוֹמַר אֵלֶּה לְמַעֵט זוּלָתָם, וּמִפָּסוּק רִאשׁוֹן לֹא נִשְׁמַע זֶה לְצַד שֶׁאָמַר ״וְאֵלֶּה״ שֶׁלֹּא תִשְׁמַע שֶׁפָּסַל עִם בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל שֶׁקָּדְמוּ לָהֶם, וְהָבֵן.

אלה שמות…המשוחים, These are the names… who had been anointed, etc. When the Torah repeated the word "these" both in verse one and again in our verse it is to stress that only these four sons of Aaron had been anointed. Had the Torah not repeated the word אלה here we could have assumed that other Levites had been anointed seeing that the chapter commenced with the word ואלה, "and these."

ג׳:ד׳ וַיָּ֣מָת נָדָ֣ב וַאֲבִיה֣וּא לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֡ה בְּֽהַקְרִבָם֩ אֵ֨שׁ זָרָ֜ה לִפְנֵ֤י יְהוָה֙ בְּמִדְבַּ֣ר סִינַ֔י וּבָנִ֖ים לֹא־הָי֣וּ לָהֶ֑ם וַיְכַהֵ֤ן אֶלְעָזָר֙ וְאִ֣יתָמָ֔ר עַל־פְּנֵ֖י אַהֲרֹ֥ן אֲבִיהֶֽם׃ (פ)

3:4 But Nadab and Abihu died aOthers “before.”by the will of-a the LORD, when they offered alien fire before the LORD in the wilderness of Sinai; and they left no sons. So it was Eleazar and Ithamar who served as priests in the lifetime of their father Aaron.

3:4 And Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD, when they offered strange fire before the LORD, in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children; and Eleazar and Ithamar ministered in the priest’s office in the presence of Aaron their father.

ג׳:ד׳ וּמִית נָדָב וַאֲבִיהוּא קֳדָם יְיָ בְּקָרוֹבֵיהוֹן אֶשָּׁתָא נוּכְרֵיתָא קֳדָם יְיָ בְּמַדְבְּרָא דְסִינַי וּבְנִין לָא הֲווֹ לְהוֹן וְשַׁמֵּשׁ אֶלְעָזָר וְאִיתָמָר עַל אַפֵּי אַהֲרֹן אֲבוּהוֹן:

על פני אהרן. בְּחַיָּיו:

ג׳:ה׳ וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃

3:5 The LORD spoke to Moses, saying:

ג׳:ה׳ וּמַלִּיל יְיָ עִם משֶׁה לְמֵימָר:

ג׳:ו׳ הַקְרֵב֙ אֶת־מַטֵּ֣ה לֵוִ֔י וְֽהַעֲמַדְתָּ֣ אֹת֔וֹ לִפְנֵ֖י אַהֲרֹ֣ן הַכֹּהֵ֑ן וְשֵׁרְת֖וּ אֹתֽוֹ׃

3:6 Advance the tribe of Levi and place them in attendance upon Aaron the priest to serve him.

3:6 ’Bring the tribe of Levi near, and set them before Aaron the priest, that they may minister unto him.

ג׳:ו׳ קָרֵב יָת שִׁבְטָא דְלֵוִי וּתְקֵים יָתֵיהּ קֳדָם אַהֲרֹן כַּהֲנָא וִישַׁמְּשׁוּן יָתֵיהּ:

ושרתו אתו. וּמַהוּ הַשֵּׁרוּת?

ושמרו את משמרתו. לְפִי שֶׁשְּׁמִירַת הַמִּקְדָּשׁ עָלָיו שֶׁלֹּא יִקְרַב זָר, כְּמוֹ שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר "אַתָּה וּבָנֶיךָ וּבֵית אָבִיךָ אִתָּךְ תִּשְׂאוּ אֶת עֲוֹן הַמִּקְדָּשׁ" (במדבר י"ח), וְהַלְוִיִּם הַלָּלוּ מְסַיְּעִין אוֹתָם, זוֹ הִיא הַשֵּׁרוּת:

ג׳:ז׳ וְשָׁמְר֣וּ אֶת־מִשְׁמַרְתּ֗וֹ וְאֶת־מִשְׁמֶ֙רֶת֙ כָּל־הָ֣עֵדָ֔ה לִפְנֵ֖י אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֑ד לַעֲבֹ֖ד אֶת־עֲבֹדַ֥ת הַמִּשְׁכָּֽן׃

3:7 They shall perform duties for him and for the whole community before the Tent of Meeting, doing the work of the Tabernacle.

3:7 And they shall keep his charge, and the charge of the whole congregation before the tent of meeting, to do the service of the tabernacle.

ג׳:ז׳ וְיִטְּרוּן יָת מַטַּרְתֵּיהּ וְיָת מַטְּרַת כָּל כְּנִשְׁתָּא קֳדָם מַשְׁכַּן זִמְנָא לְמִפְלַח יָת פָּלְחַן מַשְׁכְּנָא:

ושמרו את משמרתו. כָּל מִנּוּי שֶׁהָאָדָם מְמֻנֶּה עָלָיו וּמֻטָּל עָלָיו לַעֲשׂוֹתוֹ קָרוּי מִשְׁמֶרֶת בְּכָל הַמִּקְרָא וּבִלְשׁוֹן הַמִּשְׁנָה, כְּמוֹ שֶׁאָמוּר בְּבִגְתָן וָתֶרֶשׁ "וַהֲלֹא אֵין מִשְׁמַרְתִּי וּמִשְׁמַרְתְּךָ שָׁוָה" (מגילה י"ג), וְכֵן מִשְׁמְרוֹת כְהֻנָּה וּלְוִיָּה:

ג׳:ח׳ וְשָׁמְר֗וּ אֶֽת־כָּל־כְּלֵי֙ אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֔ד וְאֶת־מִשְׁמֶ֖רֶת בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל לַעֲבֹ֖ד אֶת־עֲבֹדַ֥ת הַמִּשְׁכָּֽן׃

3:8 They shall take charge of all the furnishings of the Tent of Meeting—a duty on behalf of the Israelites—doing the work of the Tabernacle.

3:8 And they shall keep all the furniture of the tent of meeting, and the charge of the children of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle.

ג׳:ח׳ וְיִטְּרוּן יָת כָּל מָאנֵי מַשְׁכַּן זִמְנָא וְיָת מַטְּרַת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לְמִפְלַח יָת פָּלְחַן מַשְׁכְּנָא:

ואת משמרת בני ישראל. שֶׁכֻּלָּן הָיוּ זְקוּקִין לְצָרְכֵי הַמִּקְדָּשׁ, אֶלָּא שֶׁהַלְוִיִּם בָּאִים תַּחְתֵּיהֶם בִּשְׁלִיחוּתָם, לְפִיכָךְ לוֹקְחִים מֵהֶם הַמַּעַשְׂרוֹת בִּשְׂכָרָן, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר "כִּי שָׂכָר הוּא לָכֶם חֵלֶף עֲבֹדַתְכֶם" (במדבר י"ח):

ג׳:ט׳ וְנָתַתָּה֙ אֶת־הַלְוִיִּ֔ם לְאַהֲרֹ֖ן וּלְבָנָ֑יו נְתוּנִ֨ם נְתוּנִ֥ם הֵ֙מָּה֙ ל֔וֹ מֵאֵ֖ת בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

3:9 You shall assign the Levites to Aaron and to his sons: they are formally assigned to him from among the Israelites.

3:9 And thou shalt give the Levites unto Aaron and to his sons; they are wholly given unto him from the children of Israel.

ג׳:ט׳ וְתִתֵּן יָת לֵוָאֵי לְאַהֲרֹן וְלִבְנוֹהִי מְסִירִין יְהִיבִין אִנּוּן לֵיהּ מִן בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל:

נתונם המה לו. לְעֶזְרָה:

מאת בני ישראל. כְּמוֹ מִתּוֹךְ בְּנֵי יִשׂרָאֵל, כְּלוֹמַר מִשְּׁאָר כָּל הָעֵדָה נִבְדְּלוּ לְכָךְ בִּגְזֵרַת הַמָּקוֹם וְהוּא נְתָנָם לוֹ, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר "וָאֶתְּנָה אֶת הַלְוִיִּם נְתֻנִים" וְגוֹ' (במדבר ח'):

ג׳:י׳ וְאֶת־אַהֲרֹ֤ן וְאֶת־בָּנָיו֙ תִּפְקֹ֔ד וְשָׁמְר֖וּ אֶת־כְּהֻנָּתָ֑ם וְהַזָּ֥ר הַקָּרֵ֖ב יוּמָֽת׃ (פ)

3:10 You shall make Aaron and his sons responsible for observing their priestly duties; and any outsider who encroaches shall be put to death.

3:10 And thou shalt appoint Aaron and his sons, that they may keep their priesthood; and the common man that draweth nigh shall be put to death.’

ג׳:י׳ וְיָת אַהֲרֹן וְיָת בְּנוֹהִי תְּמַנֵּי וְיִטְּרוּן יָת כְּהֻנַּתְהוֹן וְחִלּוֹנַי דְּיִקְרַב יִתְקְטָל:

ואת אהרן ואת בניו תפקד. לְשׁוֹן פְּקִידוּת, וְאֵינוֹ לְשׁוֹן מִנְיָן:

ושמרו את כהנתם. קַבָּלַת דָּמִים וּזְרִיקָה וְהַקְטָרָה וַעֲבוֹדוֹת הַמְּסוּרוֹת לַכֹּהֲנִים:

ג׳:י"א וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃

3:11 The LORD spoke to Moses, saying:

3:11 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying:

ג׳:י"א וּמַלִּיל יְיָ עִם משֶׁה לְמֵימָר:

ג׳:י"ב וַאֲנִ֞י הִנֵּ֧ה לָקַ֣חְתִּי אֶת־הַלְוִיִּ֗ם מִתּוֹךְ֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל תַּ֧חַת כָּל־בְּכ֛וֹר פֶּ֥טֶר רֶ֖חֶם מִבְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְהָ֥יוּ לִ֖י הַלְוִיִּֽם׃

3:12 I hereby take the Levites from among the Israelites in place of all the first-born, the first issue of the womb among the Israelites: the Levites shall be Mine.

3:12 ’And I, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of every first-born that openeth the womb among the children of Israel; and the Levites shall be Mine;

ג׳:י"ב וַאֲנָא הָא קָרֵבִית יָת לֵוָאֵי מִגּוֹ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל חֲלַף כָּל בּוּכְרָא פָּתַח וַלְדָּא מִבְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וִיהוֹן מְשַׁמְּשִׁין קֳדָמַי לֵוָאֵי:

ואני הנה לקחתי. וַאֲנִי מֵהֵיכָן זָכִיתִי בָהֶן מתוך בני ישראל שֶׁיִּהְיוּ יִשְׂרָאֵל שׂוֹכְרִין אוֹתָן לְשֵׁרוּת שֶׁלִּי? עַ"יְ הַבְּכוֹרוֹת זָכִיתִי בָהֶם וּלְקַחְתִּים תְּמוּרָתָם. לְפִי שֶׁהָיְתָה הָעֲבוֹדָה בַּבְּכוֹרוֹת, וּכְשֶׁחָטְאוּ בָעֵגֶל נִפְסְלוּ, וְהַלְוִיִּם שֶׁלֹּא עָבְדוּ עֲ"זָ נִבְחֲרוּ תַחְתֵּיהֶם (עי' זבחים קי"ב):

ג׳:י"ג כִּ֣י לִי֮ כָּל־בְּכוֹר֒ בְּיוֹם֩ הַכֹּתִ֨י כָל־בְּכ֜וֹר בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֗יִם הִקְדַּ֨שְׁתִּי לִ֤י כָל־בְּכוֹר֙ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל מֵאָדָ֖ם עַד־בְּהֵמָ֑ה לִ֥י יִהְי֖וּ אֲנִ֥י יְהוָֽה׃ (ס)

3:13 For every first-born is Mine: at the time that I smote every first-born in the land of Egypt, I consecrated every first-born in Israel, man and beast, to Myself, to be Mine, the LORD’s.

3:13 for all the first-born are Mine: on the day that I smote all the first-born in the land of Egypt I hallowed unto Me all the first-born in Israel, both man and beast, Mine they shall be: I am the LORD.’ .

ג׳:י"ג אֲרֵי דִילִי כָּל בּוּכְרָא בְּיוֹמָא דִקְטָלִית כָּל בּוּכְרָא בְּאַרְעָא דְמִצְרַיִם אַקְדֵּשִׁית קֳדָמַי כָּל בּוּכְרָא בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל מֵאֱנָשָׁא עַד בְּעִירָא דִּילִי יְהוֹן אֲנָא יְיָ:
