ל"ב:י"ט וַיַּ֥רְא יְהוָ֖ה וַיִּנְאָ֑ץ מִכַּ֥עַס בָּנָ֖יו וּבְנֹתָֽיו׃
32:19 The LORD saw and was vexed And spurned His sons and His daughters.
32:19 And the LORD saw, and spurned, Because of the provoking of His sons and His daughters.
ל"ב:י"ט וּגֱלִי קֳדָם יְיָ וּתְקֵף רָגְזֵיהּ מִדְאַרְגִּיזוּ קָדָמוֹהִי בְּנִין וּבְנָן:
ל"ב:כ׳ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר אַסְתִּ֤ירָה פָנַי֙ מֵהֶ֔ם אֶרְאֶ֖ה מָ֣ה אַחֲרִיתָ֑ם כִּ֣י ד֤וֹר תַּהְפֻּכֹת֙ הֵ֔מָּה בָּנִ֖ים לֹא־אֵמֻ֥ן בָּֽם׃
32:20 He said: I will hide My countenance from them, And see how they fare in the end. For they are a treacherous breed, Children with no loyalty in them.
32:20 And He said: ‘I will hide My face from them, I will see what their end shall be; For they are a very froward generation, Children in whom is no faithfulness.
ל"ב:כ׳ וַאֲמַר אֱסַלֵק שְׁכִנְתִּי מִנְּהוֹן גֶּלִי קֳדָמַי מָא יְהֵי בְסוֹפֵיהוֹן אֲרֵי דָרָא דְאַשְׁנִיּוּ אִנּוּן בְּנַיָּא דִּלֵית בְּהוֹן הֵימָנוּ:
ל"ב:כ׳ אור החיים
1כִּי דוֹר תַּהְפֻּכוֹת וְגוֹ׳. פֵּרוּשׁ, לְפִי שֶׁאָמַר הַכָּתוּב בְּסָמוּךְ ״אַסְתִּירָה פָנַי״ וְגוֹ׳, וּבָזֶה לֹא יַשְׁקִיף וְיִרְאֶה הֲגַם שֶׁיַּעֲשֶׂה תְּשׁוּבָה וִיחַנְּנוּ קוֹלָם, וְאֵין זֶה מִן הַנָּכוֹן לַעֲשׂוֹת כֵּן, לָזֶה גָּמַר אוֹמֶר הַטַּעַם ״כִּי דוֹר תַּהְפֻּכוֹת״, פֵּרוּשׁ מִתְהַפְּכִים מִטּוֹבָה לְרָעָה. וְאָמְרוֹ ״בָּנִים״, פֵּרוּשׁ אֲפִלּוּ יַחְשְׁבוּ לְהֵיטִיב לָבֹא אֶל גֶּדֶר שֶׁיִּהְיוּ נֶחְשָׁבִים בָּנִים, ״לֹא אֵמֻן בָּם״ כִּי יָשׁוּבוּ לְהַרְשִׁיעַ וְאֵין חֲזָרָתָם שְׁלֵמָה, וַאֲשֶׁר עַל כֵּן רָאוּי הוּא לְהַסְתִּיר וְגוֹ׳:
כי דור תהפוכות המה, "for they are a generation who have reversed themselves." Inasmuch as G'd had said in the first half of this verse that He would hide His face from them, awaiting what would befall the Israelites, this implies that even if they were to turn penitent -seeing G'd would not observe this as He had stopped watching what the Israelites were doing,- He would not accept such penitence. Moses offers as the reason for such an attitude by G'd that the people have turned already from good to evil; he adds בנים ולא אמון בם, "they are thoroughly faithless children." Even if they were to repent to the point of again qualifying for the description of children (of G'd), such repentance will not endure as they are fickle and do not keep faith. As a result of such considerations G'd hides His face from them.
ל"ב:כ"א הֵ֚ם קִנְא֣וּנִי בְלֹא־אֵ֔ל כִּעֲס֖וּנִי בְּהַבְלֵיהֶ֑ם וַאֲנִי֙ אַקְנִיאֵ֣ם בְּלֹא־עָ֔ם בְּג֥וֹי נָבָ֖ל אַכְעִיסֵֽם׃
32:21 They incensed Me with no-gods, Vexed Me with their futilities;gI.e., idols. I’ll incense them with a no-folk, Vex them with a nation of fools.
32:21 They have roused Me to jealousy with a no-god; They have provoked Me with their vanities; And I will rouse them to jealousy with a no-people; I will provoke them with a vile nation.
ל"ב:כ"א אִנּוּן אַקְנִיאוּ קֳדָמַי בְּלָא דַחֲלָא אַרְגִּיזוּ קֳדָמַי בְּפָלְחַן טַעֲוָן וַאֲנָא אַקְנִנּוּן בְּלָא עַם בְּעַמָּא טַפְשָׁא אַרְגֵּזִנּוּן:
ל"ב:כ"ב כִּי־אֵשׁ֙ קָדְחָ֣ה בְאַפִּ֔י וַתִּיקַ֖ד עַד־שְׁא֣וֹל תַּחְתִּ֑ית וַתֹּ֤אכַל אֶ֙רֶץ֙ וִֽיבֻלָ֔הּ וַתְּלַהֵ֖ט מוֹסְדֵ֥י הָרִֽים׃
32:22 For a fire has flared in My wrath And burned to the bottom of Sheol, Has consumed the earth and its increase, Eaten down to the base of the hills.
32:22 For a fire is kindled in My nostril, And burneth unto the depths of the nether-world, And devoureth the earth with her produce, And setteth ablaze the foundations of the mountains.
ל"ב:כ"ב אֲרֵי קִדּוּם תַּקִּיף כְּאֶשָּׁא נְפַק מִקֳּדָמַי בִּרְגַז וְשֵׁצֵי עַד שְׁאוֹל אֲרָעִית וְאָסֵף אַרְעָא וַעֲלַלְתַּהּ וְשֵׁצִיַּת עַד סְיָפֵי טוּרַיָּא:
ל"ב:כ"ג אַסְפֶּ֥ה עָלֵ֖ימוֹ רָע֑וֹת חִצַּ֖י אֲכַלֶּה־בָּֽם׃
32:23 I will sweepeMeaning of Heb. uncertain. misfortunes on them, Use up My arrows on them:
32:23 I will heap evils upon them; I will spend Mine arrows upon them;
ל"ב:כ"ג אָסֵף עֲלֵיהוֹן בִּישִׁין מַכְתָּשַׁי אֱשֵׁצֵי בְהוֹן:
ל"ב:כ"ד מְזֵ֥י רָעָ֛ב וּלְחֻ֥מֵי רֶ֖שֶׁף וְקֶ֣טֶב מְרִירִ֑י וְשֶׁן־בְּהֵמוֹת֙ אֲשַׁלַּח־בָּ֔ם עִם־חֲמַ֖ת זֹחֲלֵ֥י עָפָֽר׃
32:24 Wasting famine, ravaging plague, Deadly pestilence, and fanged beasts Will I let loose against them, With venomous creepers in dust.
32:24 The wasting of hunger, and the devouring of the fiery bolt, And bitter destruction; And the teeth of beasts will I send upon them, With the venom of crawling things of the dust.
ל"ב:כ"ד נִפִיחֵי כָפָן וַאֲכוּלֵי עוּף וּכְתִישֵׁי רוּחִין בִּישָׁן וְשֵׁן חֵיוַת בָּרָא אֱגָרֵי בְּהוֹן עִם חֲמַת תַּנִּינַיָּא דְּזָחֲלִין בְּעַפְרָא:
ל"ב:כ"ה מִחוּץ֙ תְּשַׁכֶּל־חֶ֔רֶב וּמֵחֲדָרִ֖ים אֵימָ֑ה גַּם־בָּחוּר֙ גַּם־בְּתוּלָ֔ה יוֹנֵ֖ק עִם־אִ֥ישׁ שֵׂיבָֽה׃
32:25 The sword shall deal death without, As shall the terror within, To youth and maiden alike, The suckling as well as the aged.
32:25 Without shall the sword bereave, And in the chambers terror; Slaying both young man and virgin, The suckling with the man of gray hairs.
ל"ב:כ"ה מִבָּרָא תְּתַכֵּל חַרְבָּא וּמִתְּוָנַיָּא חַרְגַּת מוֹתָא אַף עוּלֵמֵיהוֹן אַף עוּלֵמָתְהוֹן יָנְקֵיהוֹן עִם אֱנַשׁ סָבֵיהוֹן:
ל"ב:כ"ו אָמַ֖רְתִּי אַפְאֵיהֶ֑ם אַשְׁבִּ֥יתָה מֵאֱנ֖וֹשׁ זִכְרָֽם׃
32:26 hLit. “I said, I will reduce…”; meaning of Heb. ’aph’ehem uncertain.I might have reduced them to naught,-h Made their memory cease among men,
32:26 I thought I would make an end of them, I would make their memory cease from among men;
ל"ב:כ"ו אֲמָרִית אֵחוּל רָגְזִי עֲלֵיהוֹן וֶאֱשֵׁצִנּוּן אֱבַטַּל מִבְּנֵי אֲנָשָׁא דּוּכְרָנֵיהוֹן:

1אָמַרְתִּי אַפְאֵיהֶם. פֵּרוּשׁ ״אַפְאֵיהֶם״ – אַסְמִיךְ אַפִּי עִמָּהֶם עַד שֶׁיּוּשְׁבְּתוּ מֵאֱנוֹשׁ.
אמרתי אפאיהם, "I had said 'I will scatter them, etc.'" The meaning of the word אפאיהם is: "I will continue My anger with them until their memory will cease from human memory."
ל"ב:כ"ז לוּלֵ֗י כַּ֤עַס אוֹיֵב֙ אָג֔וּר פֶּֽן־יְנַכְּר֖וּ צָרֵ֑ימוֹ פֶּן־יֹֽאמְרוּ֙ יָדֵ֣ינוּ רָ֔מָה וְלֹ֥א יְהוָ֖ה פָּעַ֥ל כָּל־זֹֽאת׃
32:27 But for fear of the taunts of the foe, Their enemies who might misjudge And say, “Our own hand has prevailed; None of this was wrought by the LORD!”
32:27 Were it not that I dreaded the enemy’s provocation, Lest their adversaries should misdeem, Lest they should say: Our hand is exalted, And not the LORD hath wrought all this.’
ל"ב:כ"ז אִלּוּלָפוֹן רָגְזָא דְסָנְאָה כְּנִישׁ דִּילְמָא יִתְרַבְרַב בְּעֵל דְּבָבָא דִּילְמָא יֵימְרוּן יְדָנָא תְקִיפַת לָנָא וְלָא מִן קֳדָם יְיָ הֲוַת כָּל דָּא:

1לוּלֵי כַּעַס אוֹיֵב וְגוֹ׳. פֵּרוּשׁ, שֶׁכַּמָּה וְכַמָּה הַכְעָסוֹת הִכְעִיסוּנִי אוֹיְבֵיהֶם, וְהוּא אָמְרוֹ ״אָגוּר״ מִלְּשׁוֹן (משלי ו:ח) ״אָגְרָה בַקָּצִיר״, שֶׁאָגוּר הוּא כַּעֲסוֹ שֶׁל אוֹיֵב וְעוֹמְדִים הֵם לְכִלָּיוֹן, וּכְשֶׁיִּרְאוּ שֶׁהִשְׁבַּתִּי שֵׁם יִשְׂרָאֵל חָס וְשָׁלוֹם ״יְנַכְּרוּ צָרֵימוֹ״, פֵּרוּשׁ, יַחְשְׁבוּ כִּי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֱמוּנָתָם נָכְרִיָּה וְלֹא צַדִּיק, וְיִתְחַזֵּק דְּבַר אֱמֶת לְשֶׁקֶר חָס וְשָׁלוֹם. וְעוֹד חוֹשֵׁשׁ ״פֶּן יֹאמְרוּ יָדֵינוּ רָמָה״, פֵּרוּשׁ, מִלְּבַד שֶׁיַּכְחִישׁוּ אֱמוּנַת יִשְׂרָאֵל וְדָתָם, יוֹסִיפוּ לַחֲטֹא לוֹמַר שֶׁאֱמוּנָתָם אֱמוּנָה רְאוּיָה, וְהוּא אָמְרוֹ ״פֶּן יֹאמְרוּ יָדֵינוּ רָמָה״, וְטוֹבָתָם וְשַׁלְוָתָם לֹא מֵה׳ הִיא אֶלָּא מֵעֲבוֹדָה זָרָה אֲשֶׁר הֵם עוֹבְדִים.
לולא כעס אויב אגור, "If it were not for the fact that I am afraid of the anger of the enemy, etc." The author understands the word אגור in this verse as identical with the same word in Proverbs 6,8, i.e. the ant which gathers in the supplies needed in winter during the preceding summer. G'd also refers to the numerous occasions when the Gentile nations have caused Him to be angry. G'd is saying that He is concerned that by wiping out Israel all the Gentile nations will conclude (gather further evidence) that the Jewish religion had never been the truth as demonstrated by the disappearance of the Jewish people. This is the meaning of ינכרו צרימו, "their tormentor will misinterpret (the course of history)." Furthermore, פן יאמרו ידינו רמה, "lest they would say 'our hand has prevailed.' Not only will they deny the authenticity of the Jewish religion but they will continue to sin by claiming that their religion had been the true religion all along. They will not attribute their wellbeing to G'd's patience with them but to the power of the deities they worship and believe in.
2וְהוּא אָמְרוֹ וְלֹא ה׳ פָּעַל כָּל זֹאת, פֵּרוּשׁ, כָּל טוֹבָתָם וְהַצְלָחָתָם. וְהָרְאָיָה שֶׁלֹּא עָשׂוּ יִשְׂרָאֵל דָּבָר רַע מַה שֶׁהֵם אֵינָם עוֹשִׂים, וְיוֹתֵר מֵהֵמָּה, וְהֵם מָשְׁלוּ בָּהֶם וַיְאַבְּדוּם.
ולא ה׳ פעל כל זאת, "and it was not the Lord who accomplished all this." This is a reference to all the glory the Jewish people had achieved prior to its decline. The nations will claim as proof for their theory that a) the Israelites had not been doing something that they had not been doing for a long time; 2) the Gentile nations gained control over them and destroyed them.
3אוֹ יִרְצֶה, שֶׁכָּל הַפְּעֻלָּה הַזֹּאת שֶׁעָשׂוּ הַשְׁחָתָה גְּדוֹלָה בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל וְהִשְׁבִּיתוּ מֵאֱנוֹשׁ זִכְרָם, יֹאמְרוּ שֶׁלֹּא עָשָׂה כָּל זֶה ה׳ אֶלָּא בְּצֵרוּף כֹּחַ וְרָצוֹן עֲבוֹדַת עֲבוֹדָה זָרָה שֶׁהִיא הִשְׁלִיטָתָם עֲלֵיהֶם:
Alternatively, the Gentiles will conclude that what had befallen Israel could only be explained in terms of a combination of both alien gods and the Lord cooperating to bring about the demise of the Jewish people.
ל"ב:כ"ח כִּי־ג֛וֹי אֹבַ֥ד עֵצ֖וֹת הֵ֑מָּה וְאֵ֥ין בָּהֶ֖ם תְּבוּנָֽה׃
32:28 iHere, apparently, Moses is the speaker; God resumes in v. 32.For they are a folk void of sense, Lacking in all discernment.
32:28 For they are a nation void of counsel, And there is no understanding in them.

1כִּי גוֹי אֹבַד עֵצוֹת. פֵּרוּשׁ, שֶׁאֵין חֲשָׁשׁ שֶׁהַגּוֹי יִרְאֶה וְיִקַּח מוּסָר וְיֹאמַר: וּמָה אֵלּוּ עַל שֶׁהִכְעִיסוּ מְעַט רָאָה מַה עָלְתָה בְּיָדָם וְכוּ׳ וְיֵיטִיב מַעֲשָׂיו, וְהוּא אָמְרוֹ ״כִּי גוֹי אֹבַד עֵצוֹת״, פֵּרוּשׁ אֵין בְּטִבְעוֹ דָּבָר זֶה וְאָבוּד הוּא מֵעֵצוֹת כָּאֵלּוּ, ״וְאֵין בָּהֶם תְּבוּנָה״ לְהָבִין דָּבָר מִתּוֹךְ דָּבָר, כְּמוֹ שֶׁאָמַרְנוּ ״לוּ חָכְמוּ יַשְׂכִּילוּ זֹאת״, פֵּרוּשׁ חֳרִי הָאַף הַבָּא עַל יִשְׂרָאֵל, וּמִזֶּה יָבִינוּ לְאַחֲרִיתָם מַה תִּהְיֶה עַל מַעֲלָם.
כי גוי אבד עצות המה, "for they are a people bereft of counsel;" As distinct from the Gentile neighbours, the Jews do not respond to being disciplined by their G'd and turn penitent. They are inherently unable to learn the lessons of history. ואין בהם תבונה, "and they do not possess discernment." They are unable to draw conclusions through unprejudiced observations. As Moses continues: "if they possessed wisdom they would use it intelligently." They would have understood that the outpouring of G'd's wrath upon them was not a natural disaster, a coincidence, but a warning to repent and to mend their ways. Moses elaborates on a few examples which should have demonstrated to the Israelites that G'd had been their support all along in the past.
