ל"ז:י"ז וַיַּ֥עַשׂ אֶת־הַמְּנֹרָ֖ה זָהָ֣ב טָה֑וֹר מִקְשָׁ֞ה עָשָׂ֤ה אֶת־הַמְּנֹרָה֙ יְרֵכָ֣הּ וְקָנָ֔הּ גְּבִיעֶ֛יהָ כַּפְתֹּרֶ֥יהָ וּפְרָחֶ֖יהָ מִמֶּ֥נָּה הָיֽוּ׃

37:17 He made the lampstand of pure gold. He made the lampstand—its base and its shaft—of hammered work; its cups, calyxes, and petals were of one piece with it.

37:17 And he made the candlestick of pure gold: of beaten work made he the candlestick, even its base, and its shaft; its cups, its knops, and its flowers, were of one piece with it.

ל"ז:י"ז אור החיים

1וַיַּעַשׂ אֶת הַמְּנוֹרָה וְגוֹ׳. תִּמְצָא בְּכָל הַמַּעֲשֶׂה שֶׁיְּדַיֵּק לְשׁוֹן הַמַּעֲשֶׂה כִּלְשׁוֹן הַמִּצְוָה, וְצָרִיךְ לָדַעַת לָמָּה שִׁנָּה בַּמְּנוֹרָה, שֶׁבַּמִּצְוָה אָמַר מְנוֹרַת זָהָב וְכָאן אָמַר אֶת הַמְּנוֹרָה.

ויעש את המנורה, He constructed the candlestick, etc. You will find that the Torah refers to the various furnishings of the Tabernacle by the same description both when we are told about what was required and when the execution is reported. Why, in this instance, did the Torah depart from this rule and instead of describing the candlestick as "the candlestick for illumination" or as "the golden candlestick," it is simply described as "the candlestick?"

2וְאוּלַי כִּי לְפִי מַה שֶׁאָמְרוּ זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה בְּהַקּוֹמֵץ רַבָּה (מנחות כח:) כִּי הַמְּנוֹרָה בָּאָה גַּם מֵהַמַּתָּכוֹת, דִּכְתִיב ״תֵּעָשֶׂה״ לְרַבּוֹת, לָזֶה אָמַר ה׳ מְנוֹרַת זָהָב לוֹמַר כִּי מַה שֶׁהִתִּיר בְּרִבּוּי תֵּעָשֶׂה אֵינוֹ אֶלָּא לְדוֹרוֹת, אֲבָל בַּמִּשְׁכָּן מְעַכֵּב לִהְיוֹת זָהָב, וְלָזֶה הִסְמִיךְ מְנוֹרַת זָהָב בְּלֹא הַפְסָקָה לוֹמַר שֶׁאֵין מַעֲשֶׂיךָ בַּמְּנוֹרָה אֶלָּא שֶׁל זָהָב. אוֹ עַל זֶה הַדֶּרֶךְ ״מְנוֹרַת זָהָב״ וְלֹא מְנוֹרַת שְׁאָר מַתָּכוֹת הֲגַם שֶׁהִכְשַׁרְתִּים לְךָ, וְדִקְדּוּק זֶה אֵין שַׁיָּכוּת לְהוֹדִיעַ בַּמַּעֲשֶׂה אֶלָּא הוֹדִיעַ שֶׁקִּיֵּם מִצְוַת ה׳ וַעֲשָׂאָהּ זָהָב, וְהָבֵן:

Perhaps the answer may be found in the rule (Menachot 28) that under certain conditions the candlestick could be made from other metals, as hinted in the word תיעשה, (25,31). The Torah mentioned in chapter 25 that the candlestick had to be made of gold in order to remind us that the rule that it could be made of cheaper metals did not apply under the conditions prevailing then. It could also be that the meaning of the words "the golden candlestick" simply means that it was to be made of gold and not of any other metal although such a candlestick is acceptable in principle. In our context the Torah simply emphasised that Betzalel conformed to the instruction and made the candlestick out of gold as ordered.

ל"ז:י"ח וְשִׁשָּׁ֣ה קָנִ֔ים יֹצְאִ֖ים מִצִּדֶּ֑יהָ שְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה ׀ קְנֵ֣י מְנֹרָ֗ה מִצִּדָּהּ֙ הָֽאֶחָ֔ד וּשְׁלֹשָׁה֙ קְנֵ֣י מְנֹרָ֔ה מִצִּדָּ֖הּ הַשֵּׁנִֽי׃

37:18 Six branches issued from its sides: three branches from one side of the lampstand, and three branches from the other side of the lampstand.

37:18 And there were six branches going out of the sides thereof: three branches of the candlestick out of the one side thereof, and three branches of the candlestick out of the other side thereof;

ל"ז:י"ח וְשִׁתָּא קְנִין נָפְקִין מִסִּטְרָהָא תְּלָתָא קְנֵי מְנַרְתָּא מִסִּטְרַהּ חַד וּתְלָתָא קְנֵי מְנַרְתָּא מִסִּטְרַהּ תִּנְיָנָא:

ל"ז:י"ט שְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה גְ֠בִעִים מְֽשֻׁקָּדִ֞ים בַּקָּנֶ֣ה הָאֶחָד֮ כַּפְתֹּ֣ר וָפֶרַח֒ וּשְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה גְבִעִ֗ים מְשֻׁקָּדִ֛ים בְּקָנֶ֥ה אֶחָ֖ד כַּפְתֹּ֣ר וָפָ֑רַח כֵּ֚ן לְשֵׁ֣שֶׁת הַקָּנִ֔ים הַיֹּצְאִ֖ים מִן־הַמְּנֹרָֽה׃

37:19 There were three cups shaped like almond-blossoms, each with calyx and petals, on one branch; and there were three cups shaped like almond-blossoms, each with calyx and petals, on the next branch; so for all six branches issuing from the lampstand.

37:19 three cups made like almond-blossoms in one branch, a knop and a flower; and three cups made like almond-blossoms in the other branch, a knop and a flower. So for the six branches going out of the candlestick.

ל"ז:י"ט תְּלָתָא כַלִּידִין מְצַיְּרִין בְּקַנְיָא חַד חֵזוּר וְשׁוֹשַׁן וּתְלָתָא כַלִּידִין מְצַיְּרִין בְּקַנְיָא חַד חֵזוּר וְשׁוֹשָׁן כֵּן לְשִׁתָּא קְנִין דְּנָפְקִין מִן מְנַרְתָּא:

ל"ז:כ׳ וּבַמְּנֹרָ֖ה אַרְבָּעָ֣ה גְבִעִ֑ים מְשֻׁ֨קָּדִ֔ים כַּפְתֹּרֶ֖יהָ וּפְרָחֶֽיהָ׃

37:20 On the lampstand itself there were four cups shaped like almond-blossoms, each with calyx and petals:

37:20 And in the candlestick were four cups made like almond-blossoms, the knops thereof, and the flowers thereof;

ל"ז:כ׳ וּבִמְנַרְתָּא אַרְבְּעָא כַלִּידִין מְצַיְּרִין חֵזּוּרָהָא וְשׁוֹשַׁנָּהָא:

ל"ז:כ"א וְכַפְתֹּ֡ר תַּחַת֩ שְׁנֵ֨י הַקָּנִ֜ים מִמֶּ֗נָּה וְכַפְתֹּר֙ תַּ֣חַת שְׁנֵ֤י הַקָּנִים֙ מִמֶּ֔נָּה וְכַפְתֹּ֕ר תַּֽחַת־שְׁנֵ֥י הַקָּנִ֖ים מִמֶּ֑נָּה לְשֵׁ֙שֶׁת֙ הַקָּנִ֔ים הַיֹּצְאִ֖ים מִמֶּֽנָּה׃

37:21 a calyx, of one piece with it, under a pair of branches; and a calyx, of one piece with it, under the second pair of branches; and a calyx, of one piece with it, under the last pair of branches; so for all six branches issuing from it.

37:21 and a knop under two branches of one piece with it, and a knop under two branches of one piece with it, and a knop under two branches of one piece with it, for the six branches going out of it.

ל"ז:כ"א וְחֵזוּר תְּחוֹת תְּרֵין קְנִין מִנַּהּ וְחֵזוּר תְּחוֹת תְּרֵין קְנִין מִנַּהּ וְחֵזוּר תְּחוֹת תְּרֵין קְנִין מִנַּהּ לְשִׁתָּא קְנִין דְּנָפְקִין מִנַּהּ:

ל"ז:כ"ב כַּפְתֹּרֵיהֶ֥ם וּקְנֹתָ֖ם מִמֶּ֣נָּה הָי֑וּ כֻּלָּ֛הּ מִקְשָׁ֥ה אַחַ֖ת זָהָ֥ב טָהֽוֹר׃

37:22 Their calyxes and their stems were of one piece with it, the whole of it a single hammered piece of pure gold.

37:22 Their knops and their branches were of one piece with it; the whole of it was one beaten work of pure gold.

ל"ז:כ"ב חֵזוּרֵיהוֹן וּקְנֵיהוֹן מִנַּהּ הֲווֹ כֻּלַהּ נְגִידָא חֲדָא דְּהַב דְּכֵי:

ל"ז:כ"ג וַיַּ֥עַשׂ אֶת־נֵרֹתֶ֖יהָ שִׁבְעָ֑ה וּמַלְקָחֶ֥יהָ וּמַחְתֹּתֶ֖יהָ זָהָ֥ב טָהֽוֹר׃

37:23 He made its seven lamps, its tongs, and its fire pans of pure gold.

37:23 And he made the lamps thereof, seven, and the tongs thereof, and the snuffdishes thereof, of pure gold.

ל"ז:כ"ג וַעֲבַד יָת בּוֹצִינָהָא שִׁבְעָא וְצִבְיְתָהָא וּמַחִתְּיְתָהָא דְּהַב דְּכֵי:

ל"ז:כ"ד כִּכָּ֛ר זָהָ֥ב טָה֖וֹר עָשָׂ֣ה אֹתָ֑הּ וְאֵ֖ת כָּל־כֵּלֶֽיהָ׃ (פ)

37:24 He made it and all its furnishings out of a talent of pure gold.

37:24 Of a talent of pure gold made he it, and all the vessels thereof.

ל"ז:כ"ד כִּכְּרָא דְּהַב דְּכֵי עֲבַד יָתַהּ וְיָת כָּל מָנָהָא:

ל"ז:כ"ה וַיַּ֛עַשׂ אֶת־מִזְבַּ֥ח הַקְּטֹ֖רֶת עֲצֵ֣י שִׁטִּ֑ים אַמָּ֣ה אָרְכּוֹ֩ וְאַמָּ֨ה רָחְבּ֜וֹ רָב֗וּעַ וְאַמָּתַ֙יִם֙ קֹֽמָת֔וֹ מִמֶּ֖נּוּ הָי֥וּ קַרְנֹתָֽיו׃

37:25 He made the incense altar of acacia wood, a cubit long and a cubit wide—square—and two cubits high; its horns were of one piece with it.

37:25 And he made the altar of incense of acacia-wood: a cubit was the length thereof, and a cubit the breadth thereof, four-square; and two cubits was the height thereof; the horns thereof were of one piece with it.

ל"ז:כ"ה וַעֲבַד יָת מַדְבְּחָא דִקְטֹרֶת בּוּסְמַיָּא דְאָעֵי שִׁטִּין אַמְּתָא אֻרְכֵּיהּ וְאַמְּתָא פְתָיֵהּ מְרַבַּע וְתַרְתֵּין אַמִּין רוּמֵיהּ מִנֵּיהּ הֲווֹ קַרְנוֹהִי:

ל"ז:כ"ה אור החיים

1וַיַּעַשׂ אֶת מִזְבַּח הַקְּטֹרֶת. זֶה הוּא מְקוֹם זִכְרוֹנוֹ, כִּי פְּנִימִי מֵהָאָמוּר אַחֲרָיו. וּמַה שֶׁצִּוָּה ה׳ עָלָיו מְאֻחָר מֵהַכֹּל, כָּתַבְתִּי בְּפָרָשַׁת תְּרוּמָה בְּפָסוּק ״וְכֵן תַּעֲשׂוּ״ (שמות כה:ט).

ויעש את מזבח הקטורת, he constructed the altar for incense. The reason that the construction of the golden altar is mentioned here is because it was situated inside the Sanctuary as opposed to the copper altar mentioned afterwards. I have explained the reason why its construction had been commanded after G'd commanded the construction of the copper altar (compare 27,1 and 30,1 respectively) in my commentary on וכן תעשו.

ל"ז:כ"ו וַיְצַ֨ף אֹת֜וֹ זָהָ֣ב טָה֗וֹר אֶת־גַּגּ֧וֹ וְאֶת־קִירֹתָ֛יו סָבִ֖יב וְאֶת־קַרְנֹתָ֑יו וַיַּ֥עַשׂ ל֛וֹ זֵ֥ר זָהָ֖ב סָבִֽיב׃

37:26 He overlaid it with pure gold: its top, its sides round about, and its horns; and he made a gold molding for it round about.

37:26 And he overlaid it with pure gold, the top thereof, and the sides thereof round about, and the horns of it; and he made unto it a crown of gold round about.

ל"ז:כ"ו וַחֲפָא יָתֵיהּ דְּהַב דְּכֵי יָת אִגָּרֵיהּ וְיָת כָּתְלוֹהִי סְחוֹר סְחוֹר וְיָת קַרְנוֹהִי וַעֲבַד לֵיהּ דֵּיר דִּדְהַב סְחוֹר סְחוֹר:

ל"ז:כ"ז וּשְׁתֵּי֩ טַבְּעֹ֨ת זָהָ֜ב עָֽשָׂה־ל֣וֹ ׀ מִתַּ֣חַת לְזֵר֗וֹ עַ֚ל שְׁתֵּ֣י צַלְעֹתָ֔יו עַ֖ל שְׁנֵ֣י צִדָּ֑יו לְבָתִּ֣ים לְבַדִּ֔ים לָשֵׂ֥את אֹת֖וֹ בָּהֶֽם׃

37:27 He made two gold rings for it under its molding, on its two walls—on opposite sides—as holders for the poles with which to carry it.

37:27 And he made for it two golden rings under the crown thereof, upon the two ribs thereof, upon the two sides of it, for holders for staves wherewith to bear it.

ל"ז:כ"ז וְתַרְתֵּין עִזְקַן דִּדְהַב עֲבַד לֵיהּ מִלְּרַע לְדֵירֵיהּ עַל תַּרְתֵּין זִוְיָתֵיהּ עַל תְּרֵין סִטְרוֹהִי לְאַתְרָא לַאֲרִיחַיָּא לְמִטַּל יָתֵיהּ בְּהוֹן:

ל"ז:כ"ח וַיַּ֥עַשׂ אֶת־הַבַּדִּ֖ים עֲצֵ֣י שִׁטִּ֑ים וַיְצַ֥ף אֹתָ֖ם זָהָֽב׃

37:28 He made the poles of acacia wood, and overlaid them with gold.

37:28 And he made the staves of acacia-wood, and overlaid them with gold.

ל"ז:כ"ח וַעֲבַד יָת אֲרִיחַיָּא דְּאָעֵי שִׁטִּין וַחֲפָא יָתְהוֹן דַּהֲבָא:

ל"ז:כ"ט וַיַּ֜עַשׂ אֶת־שֶׁ֤מֶן הַמִּשְׁחָה֙ קֹ֔דֶשׁ וְאֶת־קְטֹ֥רֶת הַסַּמִּ֖ים טָה֑וֹר מַעֲשֵׂ֖ה רֹקֵֽחַ׃ (פ)

37:29 He prepared the sacred anointing oil and the pure aromatic incense, expertly blended.

37:29 And he made the holy anointing oil, and the pure incense of sweet spices, after the art of the perfumer.
