ל"ט:א׳ וְיוֹסֵ֖ף הוּרַ֣ד מִצְרָ֑יְמָה וַיִּקְנֵ֡הוּ פּוֹטִיפַר֩ סְרִ֨יס פַּרְעֹ֜ה שַׂ֤ר הַטַּבָּחִים֙ אִ֣ישׁ מִצְרִ֔י מִיַּד֙ הַיִּשְׁמְעֵאלִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר הוֹרִדֻ֖הוּ שָֽׁמָּה׃
39:1 When Joseph was taken down to Egypt, a certain Egyptian, Potiphar, a courtier of Pharaoh and his chief steward, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him there.
39:1 And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh’s, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hand of the Ishmaelites, that had brought him down thither.
ל"ט:א׳ וְיוֹסֵף אִתָּחַת לְמִצְרָיִם וּזְבָנֵיהּ פּוֹטִיפַר רַבָּא דְפַרְעֹה רַב קָטוֹלַיָּא גְּבַר מִצְרָאָה מִידָא דַּעֲרָבָאֵי דִּי אֲחִתוֹהִי לְתַמָּן:
ל"ט:ב׳ וַיְהִ֤י יְהוָה֙ אֶת־יוֹסֵ֔ף וַיְהִ֖י אִ֣ישׁ מַצְלִ֑יחַ וַיְהִ֕י בְּבֵ֖ית אֲדֹנָ֥יו הַמִּצְרִֽי׃
39:2 The LORD was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he stayed in the house of his Egyptian master.
39:2 And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
ל"ט:ב׳ וַהֲוָה מֵימְרָא דַיְיָ בְּסַעְדֵּיהּ דְּיוֹסֵף וַהֲוָה גְּבַר מַצְלָח וַהֲוָה בְּבֵית רִבּוֹנֵיהּ מִצְרָאָה:
ל"ט:ב׳ אור החיים
1וַיְהִי בְּבֵית אֲדוֹנָיו וְגוֹ׳. הִנֵּה יְסַדֵּר הַכָּתוּב הַדְּרָגוֹת הַמַּעֲלוֹת אֲשֶׁר הֶעֱלָה ה׳ אוֹתוֹ, כִּי מִקּוֹדֶם כְּשֶׁקְּנָאוֹ נְתָנוֹ לַעֲבוֹד עֲבוֹדַת עֲבָדִים הָעוֹבְדִים עֲבוֹדַת חוּץ, כִּי הַגְּדוֹלִים לֹא יַעֲמִידוּ לְשָׁרֵת בְּבָתֵּיהֶם אֶלָּא אֲשֶׁר יִהְיֶה אִישׁ רָאוּי וּמַצְלִיחַ, וְלָזֶה צִוָּה ה׳ אִתּוֹ אֶת הַהַצְלָחָה וּבָזֶה הָיָה בְּבֵית אֲדוֹנָיו הַמִּצְרִי מִשּׁוֹמְרֵי הַבַּיִת, וְהוּא אָמְרוֹ וַיְהִי בְּבֵית אֲדוֹנָיו וְלֹא בִּשְׁאָר עֲבוֹדוֹת, וְעוֹד לוֹ מַדְרֵגָה אַחֶרֶת כְּשֶׁרָאָה אֲדוֹנָיו וְגוֹ׳ וַיְשָׁרֶת אוֹתוֹ פֵּרוּשׁ יִחֲדוֹ לְשָׁרֵת אוֹתוֹ בְּיִחוּד, שֶׁבָּזֶה יִהְיֶה חָשׁוּב וְלֹא יִחְיֶה חַיֵּי צַעַר כְּחַיֵּי הָעֲבָדִים הַשְּׁפָלִים. וְעוֹד לוֹ וַיַּפְקִידֵהוּ עַל בֵּיתוֹ הֲרֵי זֶה קָנָה מַעֲלָה עַל כָּל קִנְיַן אֲדוֹנוֹ. וְעוֹד לוֹ וַיַּעֲזֹב כָּל אֲשֶׁר לוֹ וְגוֹ׳, וְעוֹד לוֹ שֶׁלֹּא יָדַע אִתּוֹ וְגוֹ׳ שֶׁלֹּא הָיָה יוֹדֵעַ הַנִּכְנָסִים וְהַיּוֹצְאִים וְנַעֲשָׂה הוּא שַׁלִּיט, פֵּרוּשׁ מיירדומ״ו בְּלַעַ״ז, בְּכָל קִנְיַן הַמִּצְרִי:
ויהי בבית אדוניו, He stayed in the house of his master, etc. The Torah described how G'd arranged for a variety of promotions Joseph experienced while in the service of Potiphar. At the beginning Joseph performed menial labour outside the home of Potiphar. When he did so successfully he was promoted to work inside the home. He then became a guard in the home. Eventually, he performed all his duties only indoors, i,e. בבית אדוניו. Still later he became Potiphar's personal valet, i.e. וישרת אותו. This made Joseph's life comfortable. Still later Potiphar appointed Joseph as the general manager over his entire household, i.e. ויעזוב כל אשר לו ביד יוסף. Eventually, Potiphar left every initiative to Joseph, not even bothering to ask him to account for what he was doing.
ל"ט:ג׳ וַיַּ֣רְא אֲדֹנָ֔יו כִּ֥י יְהוָ֖ה אִתּ֑וֹ וְכֹל֙ אֲשֶׁר־ה֣וּא עֹשֶׂ֔ה יְהוָ֖ה מַצְלִ֥יחַ בְּיָדֽוֹ׃
39:3 And when his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD lent success to everything he undertook,
39:3 And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand.
ל"ט:ג׳ וַחֲזָא רִבּוֹנֵיהּ אֲרֵי מֵימְרָא דַיְיָ בְּסַעְדֵּיהּ וְכֹל דִּי הוּא עָבֵד יְיָ מַצְלַח בִּידֵיהּ:
ל"ט:ד׳ וַיִּמְצָ֨א יוֹסֵ֥ף חֵ֛ן בְּעֵינָ֖יו וַיְשָׁ֣רֶת אֹת֑וֹ וַיַּפְקִדֵ֙הוּ֙ עַל־בֵּית֔וֹ וְכָל־יֶשׁ־ל֖וֹ נָתַ֥ן בְּיָדֽוֹ׃
39:4 he took a liking to Joseph. He made him his personal attendant and put him in charge of his household, placing in his hands all that he owned.
39:4 And Joseph found favour in his sight, and he ministered unto him. And he appointed him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.
ל"ט:ד׳ וְאַשְׁכַּח יוֹסֵף רַחֲמִין בְּעֵינוֹהִי וְשַׁמֵּשׁ יָתֵיהּ וּמַנְיֵהּ עַל בֵּיתֵיהּ וְכָל דִּי אִית לֵיהּ מְסַר בִּידֵיהּ:
ל"ט:ה׳ וַיְהִ֡י מֵאָז֩ הִפְקִ֨יד אֹת֜וֹ בְּבֵית֗וֹ וְעַל֙ כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר יֶשׁ־ל֔וֹ וַיְבָ֧רֶךְ יְהוָ֛ה אֶת־בֵּ֥ית הַמִּצְרִ֖י בִּגְלַ֣ל יוֹסֵ֑ף וַיְהִ֞י בִּרְכַּ֤ת יְהוָה֙ בְּכָל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר יֶשׁ־ל֔וֹ בַּבַּ֖יִת וּבַשָּׂדֶֽה׃
39:5 And from the time that the Egyptian put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the LORD blessed his house for Joseph’s sake, so that the blessing of the LORD was upon everything that he owned, in the house and outside.
39:5 And it came to pass from the time that he appointed him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the LORD was upon all that he had, in the house and in the field.
ל"ט:ה׳ וַהֲוָה מֵעִדַּן דְּמַנֵּי יָתֵיהּ בְּבֵיתֵיהּ וְעַל כָּל דִּי אִית לֵיהּ וּבָרִיךְ יְיָ יָת בֵּית מִצְרָאָה בְּדִיל יוֹסֵף וַהֲוָה בִּרְכְּתָא דַיְיָ בְּכָל דִּי אִית לֵיהּ בְּבֵיתָא וּבְחַקְלָא:
ל"ט:ו׳ וַיַּעֲזֹ֣ב כָּל־אֲשֶׁר־לוֹ֮ בְּיַד־יוֹסֵף֒ וְלֹא־יָדַ֤ע אִתּוֹ֙ מְא֔וּמָה כִּ֥י אִם־הַלֶּ֖חֶם אֲשֶׁר־ה֣וּא אוֹכֵ֑ל וַיְהִ֣י יוֹסֵ֔ף יְפֵה־תֹ֖אַר וִיפֵ֥ה מַרְאֶֽה׃
39:6 He left all that he had in Joseph’s hands and, with him there, he paid attention to nothing save the food that he ate. Now Joseph was well built and handsome.
39:6 And he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand; and, having him, he knew not aught save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was of beautiful form, and fair to look upon.
ל"ט:ו׳ וּשְׁבַק כָּל דִּי לֵיהּ בִּידָא דְיוֹסֵף וְלָא יְדַע עִמֵּיהּ מִדַּעַם אֶלָּהֵין לַחְמָא דִּי הוּא אָכֵל וַהֲוָה יוֹסֵף שַׁפִּיר בְּרֵיוָא וְיָאֵי בְחֶזְוָא:
