Genesis 39:7–39:23
ל"ט:ז׳ וַיְהִ֗י אַחַר֙ הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה וַתִּשָּׂ֧א אֵֽשֶׁת־אֲדֹנָ֛יו אֶת־עֵינֶ֖יהָ אֶל־יוֹסֵ֑ף וַתֹּ֖אמֶר שִׁכְבָ֥ה עִמִּֽי׃
39:7 After a time, his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph and said, “Lie with me.”
39:7 And it came to pass after these things, that his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said: ‘Lie with me.’
ל"ט:ז׳ וַהֲוָה בָּתַר פִּתְגָּמַיָּא הָאִלֵּין וּזְקָפַת אִתַּת רִבּוֹנֵיהּ יָת עֵינָהָא לְיוֹסֵף וַאֲמֶרֶת שְׁכוּב עִמִּי:
ל"ט:ח׳ וַיְמָאֵ֓ן ׀ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אֶל־אֵ֣שֶׁת אֲדֹנָ֔יו הֵ֣ן אֲדֹנִ֔י לֹא־יָדַ֥ע אִתִּ֖י מַה־בַּבָּ֑יִת וְכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־יֶשׁ־ל֖וֹ נָתַ֥ן בְּיָדִֽי׃
39:8 But he refused. He said to his master’s wife, “Look, with me here, my master gives no thought to anything in this house, and all that he owns he has placed in my hands.
39:8 But he refused, and said unto his master’s wife: ‘Behold, my master, having me, knoweth not what is in the house, and he hath put all that he hath into my hand;
ל"ט:ח׳ וְסָרֵיב וַאֲמַר לְוַת אִתַּת רִבּוֹנֵיהּ הָא רִבּוֹנִי לָא יְדַע עִמִּי מָה דִבְבֵיתָא וְכָל דִּי אִית לֵיהּ מְסַר בִּידִי:
ל"ט:ט׳ אֵינֶ֨נּוּ גָד֜וֹל בַּבַּ֣יִת הַזֶּה֮ מִמֶּנִּי֒ וְלֹֽא־חָשַׂ֤ךְ מִמֶּ֙נִּי֙ מְא֔וּמָה כִּ֥י אִם־אוֹתָ֖ךְ בַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר אַתְּ־אִשְׁתּ֑וֹ וְאֵ֨יךְ אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֜ה הָרָעָ֤ה הַגְּדֹלָה֙ הַזֹּ֔את וְחָטָ֖אתִי לֵֽאלֹהִֽים׃
39:9 He wields no more authority in this house than I, and he has withheld nothing from me except yourself, since you are his wife. How then could I do this most wicked thing, and sin before God?”
39:9 he is not greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?’
ל"ט:ט׳ לֵיתוֹהִי רַב בְּבֵיתָא הָדֵין מִנִּי וְלָא מְנַע מִנִּי מִדַּעַם אֶלָּהֵין יָתִיךְ בְּדִיל אַתְּ אִתְּתֵיהּ וְאֶכְדֵּין אֶעְבֵּיד בִּישְׁתָא רַבְּתָא הָדָא וְאֵחוֹב קֳדָם יְיָ:
ל"ט:ט׳ אור החיים
1בַּאֲשֶׁר אַתְּ אִשְׁתּוֹ. פֵּרוּשׁ, לֹא שֶׁחָשַׂךְ אוֹתָךְ מִמֶּנִּי בְּצַו לָצָו, אֶלָּא לְצַד שֶׁאַתְּ אִשְׁתּוֹ הוּא הַדָּבָר הַמַּחְשִׂיךְ אוֹתָךְ מִמֶּנִּי. אוֹ לִשְׁלוֹל צַד הַמַּעֲלָה.
באשר את אשתו, "inasmuch as you are his wife." Joseph meant that Potiphar had not placed his wife out of bounds to Joseph in so many words; the matter was understood because of her status.
2וְאֵיךְ אֶעֱשֶׂה וְגוֹ׳. פֵּרוּשׁ, כִּי בָּזֶה אֲנִי מַפְסִיד כָּל הַטּוֹב הַמּוּשָּׂג אֶצְלִי.
ואיך אעשה הרעה הגדולה, "how could I possibly commit such a great evil?" By doing so I would lose everything I have achieved.
3וְעוֹד אֲנִי מַחְסִיר עַצְמִי מִמְּקוֹר הַנְּשָׁמוֹת, כִּי דָּבָר זֶה הוּא אָסוּר גַּם לִבְנֵי נֹחַ, וְהוּא אָמְרוֹ ״וְחָטָאתִי לֵאלֹהִים״.
Furthermore, I would create an unbridegable gap to the holy roots of my soul seeing that adultery is forbidden to Gentiles as well as to Jews. This is what Joseph meant when he said "I would sin against G'd."
4וְעוֹד יִרְצֶה, כִּי אֵין לָהּ לִטְעֹן כִּי תַּסְתִּיר הַדָּבָר וְלֹא יֵדַע אֲדוֹנוֹ, וְנִמְצָא עוֹמֵד בְּמַצָּבוֹ בְּאֵין מַחְסוֹר. לָזֶה אָמַר ״וְחָטָאתִי לֵאלֹהִים״, וְהוּא שֶׁעֲשָׂאֲנִי בְּמַצָּב זֶה, וּמִמֶּנּוּ לֹא יִסָּתֵר דָּבָר, וְנִמְצָא מַפְסִיד מַצָּבוֹ הַטּוֹב.
Furthermore, by mentioning that he would commit a sin vis-a-vis G'd Joseph already countered Mrs Potiphar's argument that her husband did not need to know about their liaison and that therefore Joseph did not stand to lose anything. Joseph attributed his present status to the help of G'd. He would certainly forfeit G'd's help if he became guilty of adultery.
ל"ט:י׳ וַיְהִ֕י כְּדַבְּרָ֥הּ אֶל־יוֹסֵ֖ף י֣וֹם ׀ י֑וֹם וְלֹא־שָׁמַ֥ע אֵלֶ֛יהָ לִשְׁכַּ֥ב אֶצְלָ֖הּ לִהְי֥וֹת עִמָּֽהּ׃
39:10 And much as she coaxed Joseph day after day, he did not yield to her request to lie beside her, to be with her.
39:10 And it came to pass, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her.
ל"ט:י׳ וַהֲוָה כַּד מַלֵּילַת עִם יוֹסֵף יוֹם יוֹם וְלָא קַבִּיל מִנַּהּ לְמִשְׁכַּב לְוָתַהּ לְמֶהֱוֵי עִמַּהּ:
ל"ט:י"א וַיְהִי֙ כְּהַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה וַיָּבֹ֥א הַבַּ֖יְתָה לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת מְלַאכְתּ֑וֹ וְאֵ֨ין אִ֜ישׁ מֵאַנְשֵׁ֥י הַבַּ֛יִת שָׁ֖ם בַּבָּֽיִת׃
39:11 One such day, he came into the house to do his work. None of the household being there inside,
39:11 And it came to pass on a certain day, when he went into the house to do his work, and there was none of the men of the house there within,
ל"ט:י"א וַהֲוָה בְּיוֹמָא הָדֵין וְעַל לְבֵיתָא לְמִבְדַּק בְּכִתְבֵי חָשְׁבְּנֵיהּ וְלֵית אֱנַשׁ מֵאֲנָשֵׁי בֵיתָא תַּמָּן בְּבֵיתָא:
ל"ט:י"ב וַתִּתְפְּשֵׂ֧הוּ בְּבִגְד֛וֹ לֵאמֹ֖ר שִׁכְבָ֣ה עִמִּ֑י וַיַּעֲזֹ֤ב בִּגְדוֹ֙ בְּיָדָ֔הּ וַיָּ֖נָס וַיֵּצֵ֥א הַחֽוּצָה׃
39:12 she caught hold of him by his garment and said, “Lie with me!” But he left his garment in her hand and got away and fled outside.
39:12 that she caught him by his garment, saying: ‘Lie with me.’ And he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.
ל"ט:י"ב וַאֲחִדְתֵּיהּ בִּלְבוּשֵׁיהּ לְמֵימַר שְׁכוּב עִמִּי וְשָׁבְקֵיהּ לִלְבוּשֵׁיהּ בִּידַהּ וַעֲרַק וּנְפַק לְשׁוּקָא:

1וַתִּתְפְּשֵׂהוּ וְגוֹ׳ לֵאמֹר וְגוֹ׳. פֵּרוּשׁ: הַתּוֹרָה מַגֶּדֶת כַּוָּנָתָהּ בִּתְפִיסַת הַבֶּגֶד שֶׁכַּוָּנָתָהּ ״לֵאמֹר״ וְגוֹ׳, אֲבָל הִיא לֹא אָמְרָה כְּלוּם, אֶלָּא שָׁלְחָה יָדָהּ לְתָפְסוֹ לְהַכְרִיחוֹ ״קוּם עֲשֵׂה״.
ותתפשהו בבגדו, She grabbed hold of his garment, etc. The Torah reveals Mrs Potiphar's intention when she grabbed Joseph's garment by stating לאמור. This word needs to be translated here: "as if to say." She did not say a word. Her actions spoke louder than any words.
ל"ט:י"ג וַיְהִי֙ כִּרְאוֹתָ֔הּ כִּֽי־עָזַ֥ב בִּגְד֖וֹ בְּיָדָ֑הּ וַיָּ֖נָס הַחֽוּצָה׃
39:13 When she saw that he had left it in her hand and had fled outside,
39:13 And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth,
ל"ט:י"ג וַהֲוָה כַּד חֲזַת אֲרֵי שָׁבְקֵיהּ לִלְבוּשֵׁיהּ בִּידַהּ וַעֲרַק לְשׁוּקָא:
ל"ט:י"ד וַתִּקְרָ֞א לְאַנְשֵׁ֣י בֵיתָ֗הּ וַתֹּ֤אמֶר לָהֶם֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר רְא֗וּ הֵ֥בִיא לָ֛נוּ אִ֥ישׁ עִבְרִ֖י לְצַ֣חֶק בָּ֑נוּ בָּ֤א אֵלַי֙ לִשְׁכַּ֣ב עִמִּ֔י וָאֶקְרָ֖א בְּק֥וֹל גָּדֽוֹל׃
39:14 she called out to her servants and said to them, “Look, he had to bring us a Hebrew to dally with us! This one came to lie with me; but I screamed loud.
39:14 that she called unto the men of her house, and spoke unto them, saying: ‘See, he hath brought in a Hebrew unto us to mock us; he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice.
ל"ט:י"ד וּקְרַת לַאֲנָשֵׁי בֵיתַהּ וַאֲמֶרֶת לְהוֹן לְמֵימַר חֲזוֹ אַיְתִי לָנָא גַּבְרָא עִבְרָאָה לְחַיָּכָא בָנָא עַל לְוָתִי לְמִשְׁכַּב עִמִּי וּקְרֵית בְּקָלָא רַבָּא:

1וַתִּקְרָא לְאַנְשֵׁי וְגוֹ׳. לְצַד שֶׁיָּדְעָה צֶדֶק יוֹסֵף בְּעֵינֵי אֲדוֹנוֹ וְלֹא יַאֲמִין לִדְבָרֶיהָ, לָזֶה נִתְכַּוְּנָה וַתִּקְרָא לָהֶם שֶׁהֵם יֹאמְרוּ בְּבוֹא אֲדוֹנֵי יוֹסֵף, וְהוּא אָמְרוֹ לֵאמֹר, וּבָעֲרָה בָּם אֵשׁ הַקִּנְאָה לְהָעִיד, וְהוּא אָמְרוֹ רְאוּ הֵבִיא לָנוּ וְגוֹ׳ לְצַחֶק בָּנוּ, שִׁתַּפְתָם בְּצָרָתָהּ כִּי גַם עֲלֵיהֶם גִּדְּלוֹ וְהוּא אִישׁ נָכְרִי.
ותקרא לאנשי ביתה, she called the members of her household, etc. She was well aware that her husband put great faith in Joseph's righteousness and might not believe her accusation against him. Therefore she called the members of her household asking them, i.e. לאמור to tell her husband what had happened (according to her version). The members of her household who were jealous of Joseph who had risen above them would be happy to testify against him, saying: "look what happened as a result of your bringing this Hebrew man into the house." When she said לצחק בנו, "to make sport of us," she used the word us deliberately to indicate that they had all suffered from Joseph's elevated status, especially since Joseph was an alien.
2אוֹ יִרְצֶה בְּאָמְרוֹ רְאוּ כִּי יָעִידוּ עַל הַדְּבָרִים כִּי כֵּן רָאוּ, וְהוּא אָמְרוֹ ״לֵאמֹר רְאוּ״, גַּם נִתְחַכְּמָה לְהִתְרַעֵם נֶגֶד הַבַּעַל, שֶׁבָּזֶה אִם יָלִיץ טוֹבָה עָלָיו תֹּאמַר: ״אַף זוֹ מִן הַתּוֹכָחוֹת עָלֶיךָ תְּלוּנָּתִי״.
It is also possible that when Mrs Potiphar said ראו, look! that she invited the members of the household to testify only to what they had seen; the Torah describes this as לאמור ראו, "say what you have seen." She included her husband in her accusation in the event he would find excuses for Joseph's alleged behaviour.
ל"ט:ט"ו וַיְהִ֣י כְשָׁמְע֔וֹ כִּֽי־הֲרִימֹ֥תִי קוֹלִ֖י וָאֶקְרָ֑א וַיַּעֲזֹ֤ב בִּגְדוֹ֙ אֶצְלִ֔י וַיָּ֖נָס וַיֵּצֵ֥א הַחֽוּצָה׃
39:15 And when he heard me screaming at the top of my voice, he left his garment with me and got away and fled outside.”
39:15 And it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment by me, and fled, and got him out.’
ל"ט:ט"ו וַהֲוָה כַד שְׁמַע אֲרֵי אֲרֵימִית קָלִי וּקְרֵית וְשָׁבְקֵיהּ לִלְבוּשֵׁיהּ לְוָתִי וַעֲרַק וּנְפַק לְשׁוּקָא:
ל"ט:ט"ז וַתַּנַּ֥ח בִּגְד֖וֹ אֶצְלָ֑הּ עַד־בּ֥וֹא אֲדֹנָ֖יו אֶל־בֵּיתֽוֹ׃
39:16 She kept his garment beside her, until his master came home.
39:16 And she laid up his garment by her, until his master came home.
ל"ט:ט"ז וַאֲחִתְּתֵיהּ לִלְבוּשֵׁיהּ לְוָתַהּ עַד דְּעַל רִבּוֹנֵיהּ לְבֵיתֵיהּ:
ל"ט:י"ז וַתְּדַבֵּ֣ר אֵלָ֔יו כַּדְּבָרִ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה לֵאמֹ֑ר בָּֽא־אֵלַ֞י הָעֶ֧בֶד הָֽעִבְרִ֛י אֲשֶׁר־הֵבֵ֥אתָ לָּ֖נוּ לְצַ֥חֶק בִּֽי׃
39:17 Then she told him the same story, saying, “The Hebrew slave whom you brought into our house came to me to dally with me;
39:17 And she spoke unto him according to these words, saying: ‘The Hebrew servant, whom thou hast brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me.
ל"ט:י"ז וּמַלֵּילַת עִמֵּיהּ כְּפִתְגָּמַיָּא הָאִלֵּין לְמֵימָר עַל לְוָתִי עַבְדָא עִבְרָאָה דִּי אַיְתֵיתָא לָנָא לְחַיָּכָא בִי:

1וַתְּדַבֵּר אֵלָיו וְגוֹ׳ לֵאמֹר. פֵּרוּשׁ אָמְרוֹ לֵאמֹר כִּי כֵן יֹאמְרוּ אַנְשֵׁי הַבַּיִת עֵדִים בַּדָּבָר, וְלָזֶה תִּמְצָא שֶׁלֹּא חָרָה אַפּוֹ עַל יוֹסֵף אֶלָּא עַל מַה שֶׁנָּתְנָה חוֹזֶק לִדְבָרֶיהָ מֵהוֹדָעוֹת הַזּוּלַת, וְהוּא אָמְרוֹ כִּשְׁמֹעַ אֲדֹנָיו וְגוֹ׳ לֵאמֹר כַּדְּבָרִים וְגוֹ׳, כִּי לֹא הָיָה צָרִיךְ הַכָּתוּב לוֹמַר אֶלָּא ״כִּשְׁמֹעַ אֲדֹנָיו דִּבְרֵי אִשְׁתּוֹ״, אֶלָּא נִתְכַּוֵּן לוֹמַר שֶׁלֹּא חָרָה אַפּוֹ אֶלָּא כְּשֶׁשָּׁמַע שֶׁיֵּשׁ מַגִּידִים עַל הַדְּבָרִים, וְהוּא אָמְרוֹ ״לֵאמֹר כַּדְּבָרִים״ וְגוֹ׳. עוֹד יִתְבָּאֵר בְּסָמוּךְ:
ותדבר אליו..לאמור, She spoke to him…saying. The word לאמור here is meant as a reference to the testimony which the members of the household would be willing to supply. Potiphar's anger was not so much directed at Joseph but at the fact that his wife was able to reinforce her accusations by calling the members of the household as witnesses. This is why the Torah writes: "when his master heard the words of his wife which she spoke to him לאמור כדברים האלה." The Torah did not need to write more than: "when his master heard the words of his wife." We are meant to realise that Potiphar only became angry after לאמור, i.e. that there were independent witnesses supporting his wife's tale.
2לֵאמֹר כַּדְּבָרִים וְגוֹ׳. פֵּרוּשׁ, לֹא שֶׁהֶאֱמִין בָּהּ כִּי כִּדְבָרֶיהָ כֵּן הָיָה, אֶלָּא לְצַד שֶׁאָמְרָה אִשְׁתּוֹ כֵּן עָשָׂה תְּנוּעָה קְטַנָּה, וְלָזֶה לֹא יִסְּרוֹ וְלֹא עָשָׂה לוֹ דָּבָר כַּמִּשְׁפָּט הַנַּעֲשֶׂה לְעֶבֶד הַנּוֹתֵן עֵינָיו בְּאֵשֶׁת אֲדוֹנוֹ.
לאמור כדברים האלה, to corroborate such words. Potiphar did not believe his wife. Since the accuser was his own wife, however, he had to make some gesture otherwise his wife would have been publicly discredited. This is why Potiphar did not discipline Joseph nor had him executed, the normal penalty for a slave who dared to aspire to the wife of his master.
ל"ט:י"ח וַיְהִ֕י כַּהֲרִימִ֥י קוֹלִ֖י וָאֶקְרָ֑א וַיַּעֲזֹ֥ב בִּגְד֛וֹ אֶצְלִ֖י וַיָּ֥נָס הַחֽוּצָה׃
39:18 but when I screamed at the top of my voice, he left his garment with me and fled outside.”
39:18 And it came to pass, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment by me, and fled out.’
ל"ט:י"ח וַהֲוָה כַּד אֲרֵימִית קָלִי וּקְרֵית וְשָׁבְקֵיהּ לִלְבוּשֵׁיהּ לְוָתִי וַעֲרַק לְשׁוּקָא:
ל"ט:י"ט וַיְהִי֩ כִשְׁמֹ֨עַ אֲדֹנָ֜יו אֶת־דִּבְרֵ֣י אִשְׁתּ֗וֹ אֲשֶׁ֨ר דִּבְּרָ֤ה אֵלָיו֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר כַּדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה עָ֥שָׂהּ לִ֖י עַבְדֶּ֑ךָ וַיִּ֖חַר אַפּֽוֹ׃
39:19 When his master heard the story that his wife told him, namely, “Thus and so your slave did to me,” he was furious.
39:19 And it came to pass, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spoke unto him, saying: ‘After this manner did thy servant to me’; that his wrath was kindled.
ל"ט:י"ט וַהֲוָה כַד שְׁמַע רִבּוֹנֵיהּ יָת פִּתְגָּמֵי אִתְּתֵיהּ דִּי מַלֵּילַת עִמֵּיהּ לְמֵימַר כְּפִתְגָּמַיָּא הָאִלֵּין עֲבַד לִי עַבְדָּךְ וּתְקֵף רָגְזֵיהּ:
ל"ט:כ׳ וַיִּקַּח֩ אֲדֹנֵ֨י יוֹסֵ֜ף אֹת֗וֹ וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֙הוּ֙ אֶל־בֵּ֣ית הַסֹּ֔הַר מְק֕וֹם אֲשֶׁר־אסורי [אֲסִירֵ֥י] הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ אֲסוּרִ֑ים וַֽיְהִי־שָׁ֖ם בְּבֵ֥ית הַסֹּֽהַר׃
39:20 So Joseph’s master had him put in prison, where the king’s prisoners were confined. But even while he was there in prison,
39:20 And Joseph’s master took him, and put him into the prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were bound; and he was there in the prison.
ל"ט:כ׳ וּנְסִיב רִבּוֹנֵיהּ דְּיוֹסֵף יָתֵיהּ וּמַנְּיֵהּ לְבֵית אֲסִירֵי אֲתַר דִּי אֲסִירֵי מַלְכָּא אֲסִירִין וַהֲוָה תַמָּן בְּבֵית אֲסִירֵי:
ל"ט:כ"א וַיְהִ֤י יְהוָה֙ אֶת־יוֹסֵ֔ף וַיֵּ֥ט אֵלָ֖יו חָ֑סֶד וַיִּתֵּ֣ן חִנּ֔וֹ בְּעֵינֵ֖י שַׂ֥ר בֵּית־הַסֹּֽהַר׃
39:21 the LORD was with Joseph: He extended kindness to him and disposed the chief jailer favorably toward him.
39:21 But the LORD was with Joseph, and showed kindness unto him, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison.
ל"ט:כ"א וַהֲוָה מֵימְרָא דַיְיָ בְּסַעְדֵּיהּ דְּיוֹסֵף וּנְגַד לֵיהּ חִסְדָּא וִיהָבֵיהּ לְרַחֲמִין בְּעֵינֵי רַב בֵּית אַסִירֵי:

1וַיְהִי ה׳ אֶת יוֹסֵף וַיֵּט וְגוֹ׳. פֵּרוּשׁ, כִּי בְּהַשְׁרָאַת שְׁכִינָה עַל הָאָדָם יוּשְׁפַּע הַנִּסְמָךְ מֵהַמַּשְׁרֶה שְׁכִינָתוֹ מִמַּה שֶׁבּוֹ, וְיָדוּעַ הוּא חֵן הַמָּקוֹם בָּרוּךְ הוּא כִּי הוּא מְקוֹר הַחֵן, וְהוּא אָמְרוֹ ״וַיְהִי ה׳ אֶת יוֹסֵף״ וּבָזֶה ״וַיֵּט אֵלָיו חָסֶד״ פֵּרוּשׁ, מִמֵּילָא, וְאָמְרוֹ וַיִּתֵּן חִנּוֹ לֶהֱיוֹת כִּי לֹא תַרְגִּישׁ בְּחִינַת הָרַע בְּמֶתֶק הַחֵן, לָזֶה הוּצְרַךְ ה׳ לְהַרְכִּיב בְּעֵין שַׂר בֵּית הַסֹּהַר אֶמְצָעִי לְעָרֵב אֵלָיו חֵן צַדִּיק, וְהוּא אָמְרוֹ ״וַיִּתֵּן חִנּוֹ בְּעֵינֵי״ וְגוֹ׳, וְהָבֵן:
ויהי ה׳ את יוסף. G'd was with Joseph. The meaning of this verse is that when a human being enjoys divine protection people around him are also influenced by the fact that such a person enjoys G'd's help. It was natural then that Joseph should find favour in the eyes of those who came into contact with him. G'd had to especially influence the warden of the prison to take a liking to Joseph as a righteous person [and therefore innocent, the victim of a miscarriage of justice. Ed.]
ל"ט:כ"ב וַיִּתֵּ֞ן שַׂ֤ר בֵּית־הַסֹּ֙הַר֙ בְּיַד־יוֹסֵ֔ף אֵ֚ת כָּל־הָ֣אֲסִירִ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֖ר בְּבֵ֣ית הַסֹּ֑הַר וְאֵ֨ת כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֤ר עֹשִׂים֙ שָׁ֔ם ה֖וּא הָיָ֥ה עֹשֶֽׂה׃
39:22 The chief jailer put in Joseph’s charge all the prisoners who were in that prison, and he was the one to carry out everything that was done there.
39:22 And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it.

1הוּא הָיָה עוֹשֶׂה. תַּרְגּוּם פֵּרֵשׁ ״עַל מֵימְרֵיהּ״. וְלִדְבָרָיו לָמָּה לֹא יְדַבֵּר הַכָּתוּב צַחוֹת וְיֹאמַר בְּפֵרוּשׁ ״עַל פִּיו הָיוּ עוֹשִׂים״? וְאוּלַי שֶׁנִּתְכַּוֵּן הַכָּתוּב בְּשַׁנּוֹתוֹ אֶת טַעְמוֹ לְהוֹדִיעַ גַּם כֵּן שֶׁהֲגַם שֶׁהָיָה הוּא הַמַּנְהִיג, לֹא הָיָה מִתְנַהֵג בִּשְׂרָרָה וּמוֹנֵעַ עַצְמוֹ מִתַּשְׁמִישׁ דָּבָר אֲשֶׁר הָיוּ עוֹשִׂים שָׁם הָאֲסוּרִים, אֶלָּא יָדוֹ כְּיַד כֻּלָּן שָׁוָה, וְזֶה יַגִּיד מֶזֶג טִבְעוֹ כִּי טוֹב הוּא וּמָצָא חֵן וְשֵׂכֶל טוֹב בְּעֵינֵי ה׳ וְאָדָם.
הוא היה עושה, which he was doing. Onkelos translates: על מימריה הוה מתעבד, that what was done inside the jail was done at Joseph's instructions. If that was so, why does the Torah not say so outright, i.e. ועל פיו היו עושים? Perhaps the Torah wanted to hint that though Joseph enjoyed great authority within the jail, he did not use it to make the other inmates feel as if he dictated to them. He did not claim any special privileges for himself either. All this was evidence of his good character.
ל"ט:כ"ג אֵ֣ין ׀ שַׂ֣ר בֵּית־הַסֹּ֗הַר רֹאֶ֤ה אֶֽת־כָּל־מְא֙וּמָה֙ בְּיָד֔וֹ בַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אִתּ֑וֹ וַֽאֲשֶׁר־ה֥וּא עֹשֶׂ֖ה יְהוָ֥ה מַצְלִֽיחַ׃ (ס)
39:23 The chief jailer did not supervise anything that was in Joseph’saLit. “his.” charge, because the LORD was with him, and whatever he did the LORD made successful.
39:23 The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand, because the LORD was with him; and that which he did, the LORD made it to prosper.
