מ"ג:ט"ז וַיַּ֨רְא יוֹסֵ֣ף אִתָּם֮ אֶת־בִּנְיָמִין֒ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ לַֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר עַל־בֵּית֔וֹ הָבֵ֥א אֶת־הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים הַבָּ֑יְתָה וּטְבֹ֤חַ טֶ֙בַח֙ וְהָכֵ֔ן כִּ֥י אִתִּ֛י יֹאכְל֥וּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים בַּֽצָּהֳרָֽיִם׃
43:16 When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to his house steward, “Take the men into the house; slaughter and prepare an animal, for the men will dine with me at noon.”
43:16 And when Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house: ‘Bring the men into the house, and kill the beasts, and prepare the meat; for the men shall dine with me at noon.’
מ"ג:ט"ז וַחֲזָא יוֹסֵף עִמְּהוֹן יָת בִּנְיָמִין וַאֲמַר לְדִי מְמַנָּא עַל בֵּיתֵיהּ אָעֵיל יָת גֻּבְרַיָּא לְבֵיתָא וּנְכוֹס נִכְסָתָא וְאַתְקֵין אֲרֵי עִמִּי יֵיכְלוּן גֻּבְרַיָּא בְּשֵׁירוּתָא:

43:17 The man did as Joseph said, and he brought the men into Joseph’s house.
43:17 And the man did as Joseph bade; and the man brought the men into Joseph’s house.

מ"ג:י"ח וַיִּֽירְא֣וּ הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֗ים כִּ֣י הֽוּבְאוּ֮ בֵּ֣ית יוֹסֵף֒ וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ עַל־דְּבַ֤ר הַכֶּ֙סֶף֙ הַשָּׁ֤ב בְּאַמְתְּחֹתֵ֙ינוּ֙ בַּתְּחִלָּ֔ה אֲנַ֖חְנוּ מֽוּבָאִ֑ים לְהִתְגֹּלֵ֤ל עָלֵ֙ינוּ֙ וּלְהִתְנַפֵּ֣ל עָלֵ֔ינוּ וְלָקַ֧חַת אֹתָ֛נוּ לַעֲבָדִ֖ים וְאֶת־חֲמֹרֵֽינוּ׃
43:18 But the men were frightened at being brought into Joseph’s house. “It must be,” they thought, “because of the money replaced in our bags the first time that we have been brought inside, as a pretext to attack us and seize us as slaves, with our pack animals.”
43:18 And the men were afraid, because they were brought into Joseph’s house; and they said: ‘Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time are we brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, and fall upon us, and take us for bondmen, and our asses.’
מ"ג:י"ח וּדְחִילוּ גֻבְרַיָּא אֲרֵי אִתַּעֲלוּ לְבֵית יוֹסֵף וַאֲמָרוּ עַל עֵסַק כַּסְפָּא דְּאִתּוֹתַב בְּטוֹעֲנָנָא בְּקַדְמֵיתָא אֲנַחְנָא מִתַּעֲלִין לְאִתְרַבְרָבָא עֲלָנָא וּלְאִסְתַּקָּפָא עֲלָנָא וּלְמִקְנֵי יָתָנָא לְעַבְדִּין וּלְמִדְבַּר יָת חֲמָרָנָא:
מ"ג:י"ט וַֽיִּגְּשׁוּ֙ אֶל־הָאִ֔ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־בֵּ֣ית יוֹסֵ֑ף וַיְדַבְּר֥וּ אֵלָ֖יו פֶּ֥תַח הַבָּֽיִת׃
43:19 So they went up to Joseph’s house steward and spoke to him at the entrance of the house.
43:19 And they came near to the steward of Joseph’s house, and they spoke unto him at the door of the house,
מ"ג:י"ט וּקְרִיבוּ לְוַת גַּבְרָא דִּי מְמַנָּא עַל בֵּית יוֹסֵף וּמַלִּילוּ עִמֵּיהּ בִּתְרַע בֵּיתָא:
מ"ג:כ׳ וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ בִּ֣י אֲדֹנִ֑י יָרֹ֥ד יָרַ֛דְנוּ בַּתְּחִלָּ֖ה לִשְׁבָּר־אֹֽכֶל׃
43:20 “If you please, my lord,” they said, “we came down once before to procure food.
43:20 and said: ‘Oh my lord, we came indeed down at the first time to buy food.
מ"ג:כ׳ וַאֲמָרוּ בְּבָעוּ רִבּוֹנִי מֵיחַת נְחֵתְנָא בְּקַדְמֵיתָא לְמִזְבַּן עִיבוּרָא:
מ"ג:כ"א וַֽיְהִ֞י כִּי־בָ֣אנוּ אֶל־הַמָּל֗וֹן וַֽנִּפְתְּחָה֙ אֶת־אַמְתְּחֹתֵ֔ינוּ וְהִנֵּ֤ה כֶֽסֶף־אִישׁ֙ בְּפִ֣י אַמְתַּחְתּ֔וֹ כַּסְפֵּ֖נוּ בְּמִשְׁקָל֑וֹ וַנָּ֥שֶׁב אֹת֖וֹ בְּיָדֵֽנוּ׃
43:21 But when we arrived at the night encampment and opened our bags, there was each one’s money in the mouth of his bag, our money in full.bLit. “by its weight.” So we have brought it back with us.
43:21 And it came to pass, when we came to the lodging-place, that we opened our sacks, and, behold, every man’s money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight; and we have brought it back in our hand.
מ"ג:כ"א וַהֲוָה כַּד אֲתֵינָא לְבֵית מְבָתָא וּפְתַחְנָא יָת טוֹעֲנָנָא וְהָא כְסַף גְּבַר בְּפוּם טוֹעֲנֵיהּ כַּסְפָּנָא בְּמַתְקְלֵיהּ וַאֲתֵיבְנָא יָתֵיהּ בִּידָנָא:
מ"ג:כ"ב וְכֶ֧סֶף אַחֵ֛ר הוֹרַ֥דְנוּ בְיָדֵ֖נוּ לִשְׁבָּר־אֹ֑כֶל לֹ֣א יָדַ֔עְנוּ מִי־שָׂ֥ם כַּסְפֵּ֖נוּ בְּאַמְתְּחֹתֵֽינוּ׃
43:22 And we have brought down with us other money to procure food. We do not know who put the money in our bags.”
43:22 And other money have we brought down in our hand to buy food. We know not who put our money in our sacks.’
מ"ג:כ"ב וְכַסְפָּא אָחֳרָנָא אוֹחִיתְנָא בִידָנָא לְמִזְבַּן עִיבוּרָא לָא יְדַעְנָא מָן שַׁוִּי כַסְפָּנָא בְּטוֹעֲנָנָא:
מ"ג:כ"ג וַיֹּאמֶר֩ שָׁל֨וֹם לָכֶ֜ם אַל־תִּירָ֗אוּ אֱלֹ֨הֵיכֶ֜ם וֵֽאלֹהֵ֤י אֲבִיכֶם֙ נָתַ֨ן לָכֶ֤ם מַטְמוֹן֙ בְּאַמְתְּחֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם כַּסְפְּכֶ֖ם בָּ֣א אֵלָ֑י וַיּוֹצֵ֥א אֲלֵהֶ֖ם אֶת־שִׁמְעֽוֹן׃
43:23 He replied, “All is well with you; do not be afraid. Your God, the God of your father, must have put treasure in your bags for you. I got your payment.” And he brought out Simeon to them.
43:23 And he said: ‘Peace be to you, fear not; your God, and the God of your father, hath given you treasure in your sacks; I had your money.’ And he brought Simeon out unto them.
מ"ג:כ"ג וַאֲמַר שְׁלַם לְכוֹן לָא תִדְחֲלוּן אֱלָהֲכוֹן וֶאֱלָהָא דַאֲבוּכוֹן יְהַב לְכוֹן סִימָא בְּטוֹעֲנֵיכוֹן כַּסְפְּכוֹן אֲתָא לְוָתִי וְאַפֵּיק לְוָתְהוֹן יָת שִׁמְעוֹן:
מ"ג:כ"ג אור החיים
1שָׁלוֹם לָכֶם וְגוֹ׳. אָמַר כֵּן הָאִישׁ מֵעַצְמוֹ מִבְּלִי דַּעַת כַּוָּנָתוֹ שֶׁל יוֹסֵף מַה הִיא, וּלְדִבְרֵיהֶם זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה (תנחומא) שֶׁאָמְרוּ כִּי הוּא מְנַשֶּׁה, יָפֶה כֹּחַ הַבֵּן מִכֹּחַ הָאָב וְיָדַע כִּי יַסְכִּים עַל דְּבָרָיו. וְאָמְרוֹ אַל תִּירָאוּ, לְפִי שֶׁהוּכַּר בִּפְנֵיהֶם הַיִּרְאָה דְּהָיוּ יְרֵאִים דִּכְתִיב (בראשית מג:יח) ״וַיִּירְאוּ הָאֲנָשִׁים״.
שלום לכם, אל תיראו, "all is well with you, do not fear." Joseph's adjutant volunteered this statement without having consulted with his master first. According to Midrash Tanchuma on this verse Joseph's adjutant was his son Menashe, and we have an example here of the power of the son exceeding that of his father. Menashe was certain that his father would concur with his remarks. The reason Menashe added: "do not fear" was because he could see fear expressed on the brothers' faces. The Torah confirms this (verse 18) when it wrote: וייראו האנשים, "The men were afraid."
2נָתַן לָכֶם מַטְמוֹן. פֵּרוּשׁ, אֵיזֶה אָדָם טָמַן שָׁם הַכֶּסֶף, וַה׳ נְתָנוֹ לָכֶם בְּיֵאוּשׁ הַבְּעָלִים, וּבְנֵי נֹחַ אֵינָם מְצֻוִּים עַל הַכְרָזַת אֲבֵדָה. וּלְחַזֵּק לִבָּם הוֹצִיא אֲלֵיהֶם אֶת שִׁמְעוֹן לְהַרְאוֹת כִּי שָׁלוֹם לָהֶם.
נתן לכם מטמון. "He has given you a treasure." He meant that some person has hidden his money in your sacks and G'd has given it to you seeing the original owners have given up hope of retrieving it, and Gentiles are not required to make public announcements when they find something valuable. He led Shimon out to them in order to lift their spirits by proving his positive attitude towards them.
מ"ג:כ"ד וַיָּבֵ֥א הָאִ֛ישׁ אֶת־הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים בֵּ֣יתָה יוֹסֵ֑ף וַיִּתֶּן־מַ֙יִם֙ וַיִּרְחֲצ֣וּ רַגְלֵיהֶ֔ם וַיִּתֵּ֥ן מִסְפּ֖וֹא לַחֲמֹֽרֵיהֶֽם׃
43:24 Then the man brought the men into Joseph’s house; he gave them water to bathe their feet, and he provided feed for their asses.
43:24 And the man brought the men into Joseph’s house, and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their asses provender.

1וַיָּבֵא הָאִישׁ אֶת הָאֲנָשִׁים וְגוֹ׳. אָמַר כֵּן פַּעַם שְׁנִיָּה לֶהֱיוֹת כִּי בְּפַעַם רִאשׁוֹנָה נִפְסְקָה הַכְּנִיסָה, כִּי נִתְעַכְּבוּ וְעָמְדוּ פֶּתַח הַבַּיִת, פֵּרוּשׁ קוֹדֶם שֶׁיִּכָּנְסוּ לַבַּיִת. וַהֲגַם שֶׁאָמַר ״וַיָּבֵא הָאִישׁ וְגוֹ׳ בֵּיתָה יוֹסֵף״ הוּא עַל דֶּרֶךְ אָמְרוֹ (בראשית כח:י) ״וַיֵּלֶךְ חָרָנָה״ שֶׁהַכַּוָּנָה הִיא לָלֶכֶת לְחָרָן, וּלְעוֹלָם עֲדַיִן לֹא נִכְנְסוּ. וְטַעַם שֶׁרָצוּ לְדַבֵּר עִמּוֹ קוֹדֶם עַל הַכֶּסֶף, לָדַעַת בִּיאָתָם לְמָה, אִם לְטוֹב אִם לְרַע, לָדַעַת מַה יַּעֲשֶׂה יִשְׂרָאֵל. וְאַחַר תְּשׁוּבָתוֹ אֲלֵיהֶם הֻצְרַךְ פַּעַם שְׁנִיָּה לוֹמַר ״וַיָּבֵא הָאִישׁ בֵּיתָה יוֹסֵף״, פֵּרוּשׁ בַּיִת הַמְשֻׁבָּח שֶׁלּוֹ.
ויבא האיש את האנשים ביתה יוסף. The man (adjutant) brought the men into Joseph's home. Why has the Torah repeated the fact that the brothers were brought to the home of Joseph? We have already been told about this in verse 18? Apparently they were interrupted before they entered Joseph's home when they stopped in front of the house. The reason was that the brothers first wanted to explain that they had found their money in their bags when they had arrived back in Canaan. They wanted to know why they were being brought to Joseph's home. They were not sure whether this bode them good or ill. After Shimon had been released they realised that they were to be made welcome. This is why the Torah had to repeat the fact that they were brought to Joseph's palace, i.e. as guests not as prisoners.
מ"ג:כ"ה וַיָּכִ֙ינוּ֙ אֶת־הַמִּנְחָ֔ה עַד־בּ֥וֹא יוֹסֵ֖ף בַּֽצָּהֳרָ֑יִם כִּ֣י שָֽׁמְע֔וּ כִּי־שָׁ֖ם יֹ֥אכְלוּ לָֽחֶם׃
43:25 They laid out their gifts to await Joseph’s arrival at noon, for they had heard that they were to dine there.
43:25 And they made ready the present against Joseph’s coming at noon; for they heard that they should eat bread there.
מ"ג:כ"ה וְאַתְקִינוּ יָת תִּקְרֻבְתָּא עַד דְּעַל יוֹסֵף בְּשֵׁירוּתָא אֲרֵי שְׁמָעוּ אֲרֵי תַמָּן יֵיכְלוּן לַחְמָא:
מ"ג:כ"ו וַיָּבֹ֤א יוֹסֵף֙ הַבַּ֔יְתָה וַיָּבִ֥יאּוּ ל֛וֹ אֶת־הַמִּנְחָ֥ה אֲשֶׁר־בְּיָדָ֖ם הַבָּ֑יְתָה וַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּ־ל֖וֹ אָֽרְצָה׃
43:26 When Joseph came home, they presented to him the gifts that they had brought with them into the house, bowing low before him to the ground.
43:26 And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed down to him to the earth.
מ"ג:כ"ו וְעַל יוֹסֵף לְבֵיתָא וְאַיְתִיאוּ לֵיהּ יָת תִּקְרֻבְתָּא דִּי בִידֵיהוֹן לְבַיְתָא וּסְגִידוּ לֵיהּ לְאַרְעָא:

1וַיָּבִיאוּ לוֹ וְגוֹ׳ הַבַּיְתָה וְגוֹ׳. פֵּרוּשׁ, לְחֶדֶר הַמְיוּחָד לוֹ, וְהֵם הָיוּ בְּחֶדֶר אַחֵר בַּבַּיִת עַצְמוֹ, וְהוֹדִיעַ הַכָּתוּב שֶׁנִּכְנְסוּ אֶצְלוֹ לַמָּקוֹם שֶׁהָיָה בּוֹ לְהַכְנִיס הַמִּנְחָה.
ויביאו לו את המנחה, They brought him the gift, etc. They had prepared this gift in a room which was especially set aside for such gifts, whereas they themselves proceeded to a different room, a room exclusively Joseph's. The Torah tells us that the brothers had entered a room in which Joseph was present in order to present their gift.
מ"ג:כ"ז וַיִּשְׁאַ֤ל לָהֶם֙ לְשָׁל֔וֹם וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הֲשָׁל֛וֹם אֲבִיכֶ֥ם הַזָּקֵ֖ן אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֲמַרְתֶּ֑ם הַעוֹדֶ֖נּוּ חָֽי׃
43:27 He greeted them, and he said, “How is your aged father of whom you spoke? Is he still in good health?”
43:27 And he asked them of their welfare, and said: ‘Is your father well, the old man of whom ye spoke? Is he yet alive?’
מ"ג:כ"ז וּשְׁאֵיל לְהוֹן לִשְׁלַם וַאֲמַר הַשְׁלַם אֲבוּכוֹן סָבָא דִּי אֲמַרְתּוּן הַעַד כְּעַן קַיָּם:

1וַיִּשְׁאַל לָהֶם לְשָׁלוֹם. פֵּרוּשׁ, מִתְּחִלָּה שָׁאַל בִּשְׁלוֹמָם, כִּי הוּא מֵהַמּוּסָר לְהַקְדִּים לִשְׁאוֹל שָׁלוֹם אֶת אֲשֶׁר לְפָנָיו, וְהוּא אָמְרוֹ לָהֶם לְשָׁלוֹם, וְאַחַר כָּךְ שָׁאַל עַל אֲשֶׁר אֵינֶנּוּ שָׁם ״הֲשָׁלוֹם אֲבִיכֶם״ וְגוֹ׳:
וישאל להם לשלום. He asked them how they were, etc. Joseph first enquired how the brothers were before he enquired after their father's wellbeing. One first greets the people present before enquiring after those who are not present.
2הֲשָׁלוֹם אֲבִיכֶם הַזָּקֵן וְגוֹ׳. קָשֶׁה אֵיךְ יֻצְדַּק לִשְׁאוֹל הֲשָׁלוֹם קוֹדֶם שְׁאֵלַת הַעוֹדֶנּוּ חָי? וְאִם הַכַּוָּנָה בִּשְׁאֵלַת הַשָּׁלוֹם הִיא מַה שֶׁפֵּרֵשׁ בְּאָמְרוֹ ״הַעוֹדֶנּוּ חָי״, לָמָּה כָּפַל? גַּם בִּתְשׁוּבַת הָאַחִים קָשֶׁה, שֶׁאָמְרוּ ״שָׁלוֹם וְגוֹ׳ עוֹדֶנּוּ חָי״ – אַחַר שֶׁאָמְרוּ ״שָׁלוֹם״, מַה חִדּוּשׁ בְּאָמְרָם ״עוֹדֶנּוּ חָי״?
השלום אביכם הזקן, is your aged father well? How could Joseph enquire after the wellbeing of the brothers' father before he had even ascertained that Jacob was still alive as he did at the end of the verse? If the enquiry after their father's wellbeing meant if he was still alive , why did Joseph ask about this twice? The brothers' reply is difficult also. They too first answered that their father was well and then added that he was alive. What news did they add by confirming that their father was still alive?
3וְאוּלַי שֶׁנִּתְכַּוֵּן לוֹמַר אִם כְּכֹחוֹ אָז כֹּחוֹ עַתָּה אוֹ הֻחְלַשׁ לְצַד הַזִּקְנָה, וְהוּא מַה שֶׁדִּקְדֵּק לוֹמַר עוֹדֶנּוּ פֵּרוּשׁ כְּמוֹת שֶׁהָיָה בַּזְּמַן הַקּוֹדֵם, וְלָזֶה נִתְחַכֵּם גַּם כֵּן לְסַדֵּר שְׁאֵלַת שָׁלוֹם קוֹדֶם שְׁאֵלַת הַעוֹדֶנּוּ חָי, לְהָבִין כַּוָּנָתוֹ כְּמוֹ שֶׁפֵּרַשְׁנוּ, וּכְפִי זֶה שְׁאֵלַת הַעוֹדֶנּוּ חָי אֵינָהּ נִכְלֶלֶת בִּשְׁאֵלַת הֲשָׁלוֹם לוֹ, כִּי גַּם עַל אָדָם שֶׁהִזְקִין וְאָפְסוּ קְצָת כֹּחוֹתָיו כְּפִי הַטֶּבַע יֵאָמֵר עָלָיו שָׁלוֹם לוֹ:
Perhaps Joseph wanted to know if Jacob's wellbeing had been affected by his aging or whether he was as spry as ever. Perhaps this is why he added the word עודנו, i.e. is he as well as when you came here the last time? This is why Joseph was clever in asking first about their father's welfare before asking if he was still alive. The question then was not whether Jacob was actually alive, but whether he was as alive as the last time. An aging father could have been described as being well even if his mental and physical alertness had declined somewhat with age.
מ"ג:כ"ח וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ שָׁל֛וֹם לְעַבְדְּךָ֥ לְאָבִ֖ינוּ עוֹדֶ֣נּוּ חָ֑י וַֽיִּקְּד֖וּ וישתחו [וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲוּֽוּ׃]
43:28 They replied, “It is well with your servant our father; he is still in good health.” And they bowed and made obeisance.
43:28 And they said: ‘Thy servant our father is well, he is yet alive.’ And they bowed the head, and made obeisance.
מ"ג:כ"ח וַאֲמָרוּ שְׁלַם לְעַבְדָּךְ לְאָבוּנָא עַד כְּעַן קַיָּם וּכְרָעוּ וּסְגִידוּ:
מ"ג:כ"ט וַיִּשָּׂ֣א עֵינָ֗יו וַיַּ֞רְא אֶת־בִּנְיָמִ֣ין אָחִיו֮ בֶּן־אִמּוֹ֒ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הֲזֶה֙ אֲחִיכֶ֣ם הַקָּטֹ֔ן אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֲמַרְתֶּ֖ם אֵלָ֑י וַיֹּאמַ֕ר אֱלֹהִ֥ים יָחְנְךָ֖ בְּנִֽי׃
43:29 Looking about, he saw his brother Benjamin, his mother’s son, and asked, “Is this your youngest brother of whom you spoke to me?” And he went on, “May God be gracious to you, my boy.”
43:29 And he lifted up his eyes, and saw Benjamin his brother, his mother’s son, and said: ‘Is this your youngest brother of whom ye spoke unto me?’ And he said: ‘God be gracious unto thee, my son.’
מ"ג:כ"ט וּזְקַף עֵינוֹהִי וַחֲזָא יָת בִּנְיָמִין אֲחוּהִי בַּר אִמֵּיהּ וַאֲמַר הָדֵין אֲחוּכוֹן זְעֵירָא דִּי אֲמַרְתּוּן לִי וַאֲמַר מִן קֳדָם יְיָ יִתְרַחַם עֲלָךְ בְּרִי:
