ח׳:ז׳ וְסָר֣וּ הַֽצְפַרְדְּעִ֗ים מִמְּךָ֙ וּמִבָּ֣תֶּ֔יךָ וּמֵעֲבָדֶ֖יךָ וּמֵעַמֶּ֑ךָ רַ֥ק בַּיְאֹ֖ר תִּשָּׁאַֽרְנָה׃
8:7 the frogs shall retreat from you and your courtiers and your people; they shall remain only in the Nile.”
8:7 And the frogs shall depart from thee, and from thy houses, and from thy servants, and from thy people; they shall remain in the river only.’
ח׳:ז׳ וְיֶעְדּוּן עֻרְדְּעָנַיָּא מִנָּךְ וּמִבָּתָּיךְ וּמֵעַבְדָּיךְ וּמֵעַמָּךְ לְחוֹד בְּנַהֲרָא יִשְׁתָּאָרָן:
ח׳:ח׳ וַיֵּצֵ֥א מֹשֶׁ֛ה וְאַהֲרֹ֖ן מֵעִ֣ם פַּרְעֹ֑ה וַיִּצְעַ֤ק מֹשֶׁה֙ אֶל־יְהוָ֔ה עַל־דְּבַ֥ר הַֽצְפַרְדְּעִ֖ים אֲשֶׁר־שָׂ֥ם לְפַרְעֹֽה׃
8:8 Then Moses and Aaron left Pharaoh’s presence, and Moses cried out to the LORD in the matter of the frogs which He had inflicted upon Pharaoh.
8:8 And Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh; and Moses cried unto the LORD concerning the frogs, which He had brought upon Pharaoh.
ח׳:ח׳ וּנְפַק משֶׁה וְאַהֲרֹן מִלְּוָת פַּרְעֹה וְצַלִּי משֶׁה קֳדָם יְיָ עַל עֵסַק עֻרְדְּעָנַיָּא דִּי שַׁוִּי לְפַרְעֹה:
ח׳:ח׳ אור החיים
1אֲשֶׁר שָׂם לְפַרְעֹה. מִכָּאן שֶׁצָּרִיךְ לְפָרֵשׁ תְּפִלָּתוֹ.
אשר שם לפרעה, which He had brought on Pharaoh. We learn from this that one must be articulate and precise when offering a request in prayer.
ח׳:ט׳ וַיַּ֥עַשׂ יְהוָ֖ה כִּדְבַ֣ר מֹשֶׁ֑ה וַיָּמֻ֙תוּ֙ הַֽצְפַרְדְּעִ֔ים מִן־הַבָּתִּ֥ים מִן־הַחֲצֵרֹ֖ת וּמִן־הַשָּׂדֹֽת׃
8:9 And the LORD did as Moses asked; the frogs died out in the houses, the courtyards, and the fields.

ח׳:ט׳ וַעֲבַד יְיָ כְּפִתְגָּמָא דְמשֶׁה וּמִיתוּ עֻרְדְּעָנַיָּא מִן בָּתַּיָּא מִן דָּרָתָא וּמִן חַקְלָתָא:
ח׳:י׳ וַיִּצְבְּר֥וּ אֹתָ֖ם חֳמָרִ֣ם חֳמָרִ֑ם וַתִּבְאַ֖שׁ הָאָֽרֶץ׃
8:10 And they piled them up in heaps, till the land stank.
8:10 And they gathered them together in heaps; and the land stank.
ח׳:י׳ וּכְנָשׁוּ יָתְהוֹן דְּגוֹרִין דְּגוֹרִין וּסְרִיאוּ עַל אַרְעָא:
ח׳:י"א וַיַּ֣רְא פַּרְעֹ֗ה כִּ֤י הָֽיְתָה֙ הָֽרְוָחָ֔ה וְהַכְבֵּד֙ אֶת־לִבּ֔וֹ וְלֹ֥א שָׁמַ֖ע אֲלֵהֶ֑ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר דִּבֶּ֥ר יְהוָֽה׃ (ס)
8:11 But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he became stubborn and would not heed them, as the LORD had spoken.
8:11 But when Pharaoh saw that there was respite, he hardened his heart, and hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had spoken.
ח׳:י"א וַחֲזָא פַרְעֹה אֲרֵי הֲוַת רְוַחְתָּא וְיִתְיַקַּר יָת לִבֵּיהּ וְלָא קַבִּיל מִנְּהוֹן כְּמָא דִּמַלִּיל יְיָ:
ח׳:י"ב וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוָה֮ אֶל־מֹשֶׁה֒ אֱמֹר֙ אֶֽל־אַהֲרֹ֔ן נְטֵ֣ה אֶֽת־מַטְּךָ֔ וְהַ֖ךְ אֶת־עֲפַ֣ר הָאָ֑רֶץ וְהָיָ֥ה לְכִנִּ֖ם בְּכָל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃
8:12 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Say to Aaron: Hold out your rod and strike the dust of the earth, and it shall turn to lice throughout the land of Egypt.”
8:12 And the LORD said unto Moses: ‘Say unto Aaron: Stretch out thy rod, and smite the dust of the earth, that it may become gnats throughout all the land of Egypt.’
ח׳:י"ב וַאֲמַר יְיָ לְמשֶׁה אֱמַר לְאַהֲרֹן אֲרֵים יָת חֻטְרָךְ וּמְחָא יָת עַפְרָא דְאַרְעָא וִיהֵא לְקַלְמְתָא בְּכָל אַרְעָא דְמִצְרָיִם:
ח׳:י"ג וַיַּֽעֲשׂוּ־כֵ֗ן וַיֵּט֩ אַהֲרֹ֨ן אֶת־יָד֤וֹ בְמַטֵּ֙הוּ֙ וַיַּךְ֙ אֶת־עֲפַ֣ר הָאָ֔רֶץ וַתְּהִי֙ הַכִּנָּ֔ם בָּאָדָ֖ם וּבַבְּהֵמָ֑ה כָּל־עֲפַ֥ר הָאָ֛רֶץ הָיָ֥ה כִנִּ֖ים בְּכָל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃
8:13 And they did so. Aaron held out his arm with the rod and struck the dust of the earth, and vermin came upon man and beast; all the dust of the earth turned to lice throughout the land of Egypt.
8:13 And they did so; and Aaron stretched out his hand with his rod, and smote the dust of the earth, and there were gnats upon man, and upon beast; all the dust of the earth became gnats throughout all the land of Egypt.

1וַתְּהִי הַכִּנָּם בָּאָדָם וְגוֹ׳ כָּל עֲפַר וְגוֹ׳. קָשֶׁה, שֶׁהָיָה צָרִיךְ לוֹמַר ״כָּל עֲפַר וְגוֹ׳ הָיָה כִנִּים וַתְּהִי הַכִּנָּם בָּאָדָם וּבַבְּהֵמָה״. וְיוּבַן עַל פִּי מַה שֶׁנֶּחְלְקוּ הַתּוֹסָפוֹת בְּמַסֶּכֶת שַׁבָּת דף י״ב רַבִּי יַעֲקֹב מֵאוֹרְלִיינְשׁ וְרַבֵּנוּ תָּם מַה הִיא הַנִּקְרֵאת כִּנָּה, וּמֵהֶם הוֹכִיחוּ מִכָּאן כִּי כִּנָּה הִיא הַקּוֹפֶצֶת שֶׁדַּרְכָּהּ לְהִתְהַוּוֹת מֵעֲפַר הָאָרֶץ, וּמֵהֶם אָמְרוּ כִּי זוֹ נִקְרֵאת פַּרְעוֹשׁ, וְכִנָּה הִיא הַלְּבָנָה הַגְּדוֹלָה בַּבְּגָדִים, וְהוֹכִיחוּ מֵאוֹתָהּ שֶׁאָמְרוּ (ברכות נא,א) מִסְּמַרְטוּטֵי קַלְמֵי. וְהִנֵּה לְמַה שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר כִּי כִּנִּים הִיא כִּנָּה הַלְּבָנָה, בָּא הַכָּתוּב לְהָסִיר מְקוֹם הַטָּעוּת, כִּי הַשֵּׂכֶל יַכִּיר דָּבָר זֶה שֶׁמַּה שֶׁמִּתְהַוֶּה מֵהֶעָפָר הִיא כִּנָּה הַקּוֹפֶצֶת. לָזֶה אִם הָיָה אוֹמֵר ״כָּל עֲפַר הָאָרֶץ וְגוֹ׳ וַתְּהִי הַכִּנָּם״, אָז תִּהְיֶה הַכַּוָּנָה בִּפְשִׁיטוּת שֶׁהִיא הַקּוֹפֶצֶת. לָזֶה נִתְחַכֵּם לוֹמַר וַתְּהִי הַכִּנָּם בָּאָדָם, פֵּרוּשׁ הָרְגִילָה לִהְיוֹת בָּאָדָם מִמֶּנּוּ, וְהַכָּנַת הַהַכָּאָה הִיא שֶׁיִּתְרַבֶּה עִפּוּשׁוֹ וְיִגְדַּל בְּגוּף הָאָדָם כִּנָּה הַלְּבָנָה וּבַבְּהֵמָה כִּנָּה הָרְגִילָה בָּהּ.
ותהי הכנם באדם, the insects remained on man, etc. We would have expected the Torah to say: כל עפר הארץ היה כנים, ותהי הכנים באדם "the whole dust of the earth turned into insects, and the insects remained on man, etc." Why did the Torah reverse this sequence by telling us first that the insects remained on man? We may understand this with the help of an argument between Rabbi Yoseph from Orleans and Rabbenu Tam cited on Shabbat 12 concerning the meaning of the word כנה. Some rabbis hold that what is meant is a black flea, an insect which originated in the dust and which is able to jump very high. Other rabbis hold that these "insects" were white parasites which originated on the clothes people wore. These rabbis prove their point by basing themselves on a statement in Berachot 51 according to which vermin is generated from rags. In order to prevent the reader from making the error that the כנה described here is the so-called כנה לבנה, the parasite, the Torah makes the point that it originated from the dust of the earth. Had the Torah used the version commencing with the words: כל עפר הארץ היה כנים, there could have been no question about the insects originating in the earth. The Torah therefore displayed wisdom by writing ותהי הכנם באדם, to tell us that the insects which were normally generated in dirty clothes now became a plague of intolerable dimensions so that both man and animal suffered from an excessive amount of fleas, etc., each of the variety they were familiar with.
2אוֹ אֶפְשָׁר כִּי שְׁנֵיהֶם הָיוּ בָּעִנְיָן, הָאַחַת רְמָזָהּ בְּאָמְרוֹ וַתְּהִי הַכִּנָּם בָּאָדָם וּבַבְּהֵמָה, פֵּרוּשׁ הַמִּתְהַוֶּה מֵהָאָדָם וּמֵהַבְּהֵמָה, מִלְּבַד כִּנָּה הַקּוֹפֶצֶת שֶׁכָּל עֲפַר הָאָרֶץ הָיָה כִנִּים. וּכְפִי זֶה שְׁנֵי מִינִים אֵלּוּ נִקְרָאִים כִּנִּים, וּכְפִי זֶה אֵין הוֹכָחָה מִכָּאן לַכִּנָּה הַמֻּזְכָּר בְּדִבְרֵי חֲכָמִים מַה הִיא, אִם הִיא מִין הַלָּבָן אוֹ מִין הַקּוֹפֵץ, כֵּיוָן שֶׁשְּׁנֵיהֶם נִקְרָאִים כִּנָּה. וּמֵעַתָּה אֵין הוֹכָחוֹת הָרַב יוֹסֵף מֵאוֹרְלִיינְשׁ הוֹכָחָה, וּבָאנוּ לְהַכְרָעַת רַבֵּנוּ תָּם שֶׁהוֹכִיחַ מֵהַשַּׁ״ס מַה הוּא שֶׁקּוֹרִין חֲזַ״ל כִּנָּה, שֶׁהִיא הַלְּבָנָה, אֲבָל הַקּוֹפֶצֶת יִחֲדוּ לָהּ חֲכָמִים שֵׁם פַּרְעוֹשׁ כְּדֵי לְהַכִּיר מִין הַכִּנָּה שֶׁאָסְרוּ בְּשַׁבָּת, וְכֵן הֲלָכָה (טור שולחן ערוך אורח חיים סימן שט״ז).
It is also possible that the Torah speaks about both variants of insects. The first category is alluded to in the words: ותהי הכנם באדם ובבהמה, meaning the varieties of parasites man and beast experience on their skin from time to time. This was in addition to the insects which originate in the earth and which are called כנים as distinct from the first variety which is called כנם. If this is correct, our verse does not serve as support for the opinion of Rabbi Yoseph from Orleans, and we would have to accept the view of Rabbenu Tam who proved in the Talmud that the insect known as the white one is a parasite, whereas the other one known as the black one, which is distinguished by its great jumps, is incorrectly referred to as כנה but is in reality a פרעוש. (This is also the ruling of the halachah compare Tur Shulchan Aruch, Or Hachayim ruling 315).
ח׳:י"ד וַיַּעֲשׂוּ־כֵ֨ן הַחַרְטֻמִּ֧ים בְּלָטֵיהֶ֛ם לְהוֹצִ֥יא אֶת־הַכִּנִּ֖ים וְלֹ֣א יָכֹ֑לוּ וַתְּהִי֙ הַכִּנָּ֔ם בָּאָדָ֖ם וּבַבְּהֵמָֽה׃
8:14 The magicians did the like with their spells to produce lice, but they could not. The vermin remained upon man and beast;
8:14 And the magicians did so with their secret arts to bring forth gnats, but they could not; and there were gnats upon man, and upon beast.
ח׳:י"ד וַעֲבָדוּ כֵן חָרָשַׁיָּא בְּלַחֲשֵׁיהוֹן לְאַפָּקָא יָת קַלְמְתָא וְלָא יָכִילוּ וַהֲוַת קַלְמְתָא בַּאֲנָשָׁא וּבִבְעִירָא:
ח׳:ט"ו וַיֹּאמְר֤וּ הַֽחַרְטֻמִּים֙ אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֔ה אֶצְבַּ֥ע אֱלֹהִ֖ים הִ֑וא וַיֶּחֱזַ֤ק לֵב־פַּרְעֹה֙ וְלֹֽא־שָׁמַ֣ע אֲלֵהֶ֔ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר דִּבֶּ֥ר יְהוָֽה׃ (ס)
8:15 and the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is the finger of God!” But Pharaoh’s heart stiffened and he would not heed them, as the LORD had spoken.
8:15 Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh: ‘This is the finger of God’; and Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had spoken.
ח׳:ט"ו וַאֲמָרוּ חָרָשַׁיָּא לְפַרְעֹה הָא מָחָא מִן קֳדָם יְיָ הִיא וְאִתַּקַּף לִבָּא דְפַרְעֹה וְלָא קַבִּיל מִנְּהוֹן כְּמָא דִּמַלִּיל יְיָ:
ח׳:ט"ז וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֜ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֗ה הַשְׁכֵּ֤ם בַּבֹּ֙קֶר֙ וְהִתְיַצֵּב֙ לִפְנֵ֣י פַרְעֹ֔ה הִנֵּ֖ה יוֹצֵ֣א הַמָּ֑יְמָה וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֵלָ֗יו כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה שַׁלַּ֥ח עַמִּ֖י וְיַֽעַבְדֻֽנִי׃
8:16 And the LORD said to Moses, “Early in the morning present yourself to Pharaoh, as he is coming out to the water, and say to him, ‘Thus says the LORD: Let My people go that they may worship Me.
8:16 And the LORD said unto Moses: ‘Rise up early in the morning, and stand before Pharaoh; lo, he cometh forth to the water; and say unto him: Thus saith the LORD: Let My people go, that they may serve Me.
ח׳:ט"ז וַאֲמַר יְיָ לְמשֶׁה אַקְדֵּם בְּצַפְרָא וְאִתְעַתַּד קֳדָם פַּרְעֹה הָא נָפֵק לְמַיָּא וְתֵימַר לֵיהּ כִּדְנַן אֲמַר יְיָ שַׁלַּח עַמִּי וְיִפְלְחוּן קֳדָמָי:
ח׳:י"ז כִּ֣י אִם־אֵינְךָ֮ מְשַׁלֵּ֣חַ אֶת־עַמִּי֒ הִנְנִי֩ מַשְׁלִ֨יחַ בְּךָ֜ וּבַעֲבָדֶ֧יךָ וּֽבְעַמְּךָ֛ וּבְבָתֶּ֖יךָ אֶת־הֶעָרֹ֑ב וּמָ֨לְא֜וּ בָּתֵּ֤י מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ אֶת־הֶ֣עָרֹ֔ב וְגַ֥ם הָאֲדָמָ֖ה אֲשֶׁר־הֵ֥ם עָלֶֽיהָ׃
8:17 For if you do not let My people go, I will let loose aOthers “wild beasts.”swarms of insects-a against you and your courtiers and your people and your houses; the houses of the Egyptians, and the very ground they stand on, shall be filled with swarms of insects.
8:17 Else, if thou wilt not let My people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies upon thee, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people, and into thy houses; and the houses of the Egyptians shall be full of swarms of flies, and also the ground whereon they are.
ח׳:י"ז אֲרֵי אִם לֵיתָךְ מְשַׁלַּח יָת עַמִּי הָא אֲנָא מַשְׁלַח בָּךְ וּבְעַבְדָּיךְ וּבְעַמָּךְ וּבְבָתָּיךְ יָת עָרוֹבָא וְיִמְלוּן בָּתֵּי מִצְרַיִם יָת עָרוֹבָא וְאַף אַרְעָא דִּאִנּוּן עֲלַהּ:

1וּמָלְאוּ בָתֵּי מִצְרַיִם אֶת הֶעָרֹב. טַעַם שֶׁחָזַר לוֹמַר פַּעַם שְׁנִיָּה אֶת הֶעָרֹב וְלֹא סָמַךְ עַל הֶעָרֹב שֶׁהִזְכִּיר סָמוּךְ לָהּ, נִתְכַּוֵּן לוֹמַר שֶׁהַבָּתִּים יִמָּלְאוּ מֵהֶעָרֹב, וְאִם לֹא הָיָה אוֹמֵר ״אֶת הֶעָרֹב״ יִהְיֶה נִשְׁמָע עַל זֶה הַדֶּרֶךְ: ״וּמִלְאוּ הֶעָרֹב אֶת בָּתֵּי מִצְרַיִם״, וּכְפִי זֶה זֶה הוּא תַּכְלִית הַמַּכָּה שֶׁיְּמַלְּאוּ הֶעָרֹב בָּתֵּיהֶם לְבַד, וְלֹא כֵן הוּא, אֶלָּא מִתְּחִלָּה אָמַר מַשְׁלִיחַ בְּךָ וְגוֹ׳, פֵּרוּשׁ, לַחֲבֹל וּלְהַשְׁחִית, וְעוֹד אָמַר שֶׁיִּמָּלְאוּ הַבָּתִּים מֵהֶעָרֹב, וְהָבֵן.
ומלאו בתי מצרים את הערוב, the houses of Egypt will be filled with wild beasts, etc. The reason the Torah repeats the word הערוב, "the wild beasts," is that the houses will be filled with the wild beasts; if the Torah had merely written once: "the wild beasts will fill the houses of Egypt," we would have thought that the purpose of the plague was simply to fill the Egyptians' houses with wild beasts; this was not so, however, as the Torah had already stated: "I will send the wild beasts against you, your servants, your people as well as against your houses;" the obvious meaning is that the beasts were to cause damage and destruction. As it is, the additional message is that the houses would literally be filled with wild beasts.
2אוֹ יֹאמַר, אִם לֹא הָיָה אוֹמֵר ״אֶת הֶעָרֹב״, וְהָיִינוּ מְפָרְשִׁים ״וּמִלְאוּ הֶעָרֹב אֶת בָּתֵּי מִצְרַיִם״, הָיָה בַּנִּשְׁמָע כִּי זֶה גְּבוּל רִבּוּיָם עַד שֶׁיִּהְיֶה בָּהֶם גֶּדֶר זֶה שֶׁיְּמַלְּאוּ הֵם אֶת הַבָּתִּים, וְלֹא כֵן הוּא, כִּי רַבִּים הֵם הֶעָרֹב וְיִתְמַלְּאוּ הַבָּתִּים מֵהֶם וְלֹא מִכֻּלָּם, וְזֶה הוּא שֶׁאָמַר הַכָּתוּב בַּהֲבָאַת הַמַּכָּה ״וּבְכָל אֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם״ וְגוֹ׳.
Another meaning of the words את הערוב the second time could be that had the Torah not repeated these words we would have assumed that the plague would have exhausted its purpose as soon as the houses of the Egyptians had become full of wild beasts; however, this was not the full extent of the plague. There were so many wild beasts that they could not be accomodated even after they had already filled all the houses of the Egyptians. This is why the Torah added: "and also the ground whereon they are."
ח׳:י"ח וְהִפְלֵיתִי֩ בַיּ֨וֹם הַה֜וּא אֶת־אֶ֣רֶץ גֹּ֗שֶׁן אֲשֶׁ֤ר עַמִּי֙ עֹמֵ֣ד עָלֶ֔יהָ לְבִלְתִּ֥י הֱיֽוֹת־שָׁ֖ם עָרֹ֑ב לְמַ֣עַן תֵּדַ֔ע כִּ֛י אֲנִ֥י יְהוָ֖ה בְּקֶ֥רֶב הָאָֽרֶץ׃
8:18 But on that day I will set apart the region of Goshen, where My people dwell, so that no swarms of insects shall be there, that you may know that I the LORD am in the midst of the land.
8:18 And I will set apart in that day the land of Goshen, in which My people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there; to the end that thou mayest know that I am the LORD in the midst of the earth.
ח׳:י"ח וְאַפְרֵשׁ בְּיוֹמָא הַהוּא יָת אַרְעָא דְגשֶׁן דִּעַמִּי קָאִים עֲלַהּ בְּדִיל דְּלָא לְמֶהֱוֵי תַמָּן עָרוֹבָא בְּדִיל דְּתִדַּע אֲרֵי אֲנָא יְיָ שַׁלִּיט בְּגוֹ אַרְעָא:
