Exodus 8:19–9:16
ח׳:י"ט וְשַׂמְתִּ֣י פְדֻ֔ת בֵּ֥ין עַמִּ֖י וּבֵ֣ין עַמֶּ֑ךָ לְמָחָ֥ר יִהְיֶ֖ה הָאֹ֥ת הַזֶּֽה׃
8:19 And I will make a distinctionbMeaning of peduth uncertain. between My people and your people. Tomorrow this sign shall come to pass.’”
8:19 And I will put a division between My people and thy people—by to-morrow shall this sign be.’
ח׳:י"ט וֶאֱשַׁוֵּי פוּרְקָן לְעַמִּי וְעַל עַמָּךְ אַיְתִי מָחָא לִמְחָר יְהֵא אָתָא הָדֵין:

1וְשַׂמְתִּי פְדֻת. פֵּרוּשׁ, מִלְּבַד שֶׁלֹּא יִכָּנְסוּ לְאֶרֶץ גּוֹשֶׁן, עוֹד יַעֲשֶׂה פְדוּת אֲפִלּוּ לְיִשְׂרָאֵל שֶׁהֵם חוּץ מֵאֶרֶץ גּוֹשֶׁן, לְבַל קְרוֹב לָהֶם הֶעָרוֹב. וְדִקְדֵּק לוֹמַר בֵּין עַמִּי וּבֵין עַמֶּךָ, פֵּרוּשׁ, כְּשֶׁיִּהְיוּ עַמִּי וְעַמְּךָ עוֹמְדִים בְּשָׁוֶה, יַעֲשֶׂה ה׳ פְּדוּת לָזֶה מִבֵּין זֶה, וְלַנָּכְרִי יַשִּׁיךְ וּלְאִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל לֹא יַשִּׁיךְ.
ושמתי פדות, "I shall set apart, etc." G'd meant that not only would the wild beasts respect the boundary of the province of Goshen and not invade that province, they would not even approach those Israelites that happened to be outside the province of Goshen at the time. The Torah made this clear by the nuance "between My people and between your people." This means that whenever members of both people were found next to one another, only the Egyptians would be bothered by the wild beasts. The beasts would not bite a Jew.
ח׳:כ׳ וַיַּ֤עַשׂ יְהוָה֙ כֵּ֔ן וַיָּבֹא֙ עָרֹ֣ב כָּבֵ֔ד בֵּ֥יתָה פַרְעֹ֖ה וּבֵ֣ית עֲבָדָ֑יו וּבְכָל־אֶ֧רֶץ מִצְרַ֛יִם תִּשָּׁחֵ֥ת הָאָ֖רֶץ מִפְּנֵ֥י הֶעָרֹֽב׃
8:20 And the LORD did so. Heavy swarms of insects invaded Pharaoh’s palace and the houses of his courtiers; throughout the country of Egypt the land was ruined because of the swarms of insects.
8:20 And the LORD did so; and there came grievous swarms of flies into the house of Pharaoh, and into his servants’houses; and in all the land of Egypt the land was ruined by reason of the swarms of flies.
ח׳:כ׳ וַעֲבַד יְיָ כֵּן וַאֲתָא עָרוֹבָא תַקִּיף לְבֵית פַּרְעֹה וּלְבֵית עַבְדּוֹהִי וּבְכָל אַרְעָא דְמִצְרַיִם אִתְחַבָּלַת אַרְעָא מִן קֳדָם עָרוֹבָא:

1תִּשָּׁחֵת הָאָרֶץ. פֵּרוּשׁ, שֶׁהֶעָרוֹב יַשְׁחִית גַּם כָּל נִמְצָא מִלְּבַד בְּנֵי אָדָם:
תשחת הארץ, the land was ruined. This means that the beasts would destroy everything except the human beings.
ח׳:כ"א וַיִּקְרָ֣א פַרְעֹ֔ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֖ה וּֽלְאַהֲרֹ֑ן וַיֹּ֗אמֶר לְכ֛וּ זִבְח֥וּ לֵֽאלֹהֵיכֶ֖ם בָּאָֽרֶץ׃
8:21 Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Go and sacrifice to your God within the land.”
8:21 And Pharaoh called for Moses and for Aaron, and said: ‘Go ye, sacrifice to your God in the land.’
ח׳:כ"א וּקְרָא פַרְעֹה לְמשֶׁה וּלְאַהֲרֹן וַאֲמַר אֱזִילוּ דַּבָּחוּ קֳדָם אֱלָהֲכוֹן בְּאַרְעָא:
ח׳:כ"ב וַיֹּ֣אמֶר מֹשֶׁ֗ה לֹ֤א נָכוֹן֙ לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת כֵּ֔ן כִּ֚י תּוֹעֲבַ֣ת מִצְרַ֔יִם נִזְבַּ֖ח לַיהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ הֵ֣ן נִזְבַּ֞ח אֶת־תּוֹעֲבַ֥ת מִצְרַ֛יִם לְעֵינֵיהֶ֖ם וְלֹ֥א יִסְקְלֻֽנוּ׃
8:22 But Moses replied, “It would not be right to do this, for what we sacrifice to the LORD our God is untouchable to the Egyptians. If we sacrifice that which is untouchable to the Egyptians before their very eyes, will they not stone us!
8:22 And Moses said: ‘It is not meet so to do; for we shall sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians to the LORD our God; lo, if we sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians before their eyes, will they not stone us?
ח׳:כ"ב וַאֲמַר משֶׁה לָא תַקֵּן לְמֶעְבַּד כֵּן אֲרֵי בְעִירָא דְמִצְרָאֵי דָּחֲלִין לֵיהּ מִנֵּיהּ אֲנַחְנָא נָסְבִין לְדַבָּחָא קֳדָם יְיָ אֱלָהָנָא הָא נְדַבַּח יָת בְּעִירָא דְמִצְרָאֵי דָּחֲלִין לֵיהּ וְאִנּוּן יְהוֹן חָזָן הֲלָא יֵימְרוּן לְמִרְגְּמָנָא:
ח׳:כ"ג דֶּ֚רֶךְ שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת יָמִ֔ים נֵלֵ֖ךְ בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר וְזָבַ֙חְנוּ֙ לַֽיהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר יֹאמַ֥ר אֵלֵֽינוּ׃
8:23 So we must go a distance of three days into the wilderness and sacrifice to the LORD our God as He may command us.”
8:23 We will go three days’journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice to the LORD our God, as He shall command us.’
ח׳:כ"ג מַהֲלַךְ תְּלָתָא יוֹמִין נֵיזִיל בְּמַדְבְּרָא וּנְדַבַּח קֳדָם יְיָ אֱלָהָנָא כְּמָא דִּיֵימַר לָנָא:
ח׳:כ"ד וַיֹּ֣אמֶר פַּרְעֹ֗ה אָנֹכִ֞י אֲשַׁלַּ֤ח אֶתְכֶם֙ וּזְבַחְתֶּ֞ם לַיהוָ֤ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶם֙ בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר רַ֛ק הַרְחֵ֥ק לֹא־תַרְחִ֖יקוּ לָלֶ֑כֶת הַעְתִּ֖ירוּ בַּעֲדִֽי׃
8:24 Pharaoh said, “I will let you go to sacrifice to the LORD your God in the wilderness; but do not go very far. Plead, then, for me.”
8:24 And Pharaoh said: ‘I will let you go, that ye may sacrifice to the LORD your God in the wilderness; only ye shall not go very far away; entreat for me.’
ח׳:כ"ד וַאֲמַר פַּרְעֹה אֲנָא אֲשַׁלַּח יָתְכוֹן וְתִדְבְּחוּן קֳדָם יְיָ אֱלָהֲכוֹן בְּמַדְבְּרָא לְחוֹד אַרְחָקָא לָא תְרַחֲקוּן לְמֵיזָל צַלּוֹ אַף עָלָי:
ח׳:כ"ד אור החיים
1לֹא תַרְחִיקוּ לָלֶכֶת. פֵּרוּשׁ, כְּשִׁיעוּר שְׁלֹשָׁה יָמִים, כִּי כְּלוּם טַעַם שֶׁאָמַר מֹשֶׁה הוּא ״הֵן נִזְבַּח וְגוֹ׳ וְלֹא יִסְקְלוּנוּ״, אִם כֵּן לָמָּה יִצְטָרְכוּ לְהַרְחִיק דֶּרֶךְ שְׁלֹשֶׁת יָמִים, בְּהַרְחָקַת פַּרְסָה אוֹ יוֹתֵר קְצָת דַּי. וְטַעַם שֶׁנִּתְרַצָּה לוֹ מֹשֶׁה, כֵּיוָן שֶׁכָּל עַצְמֵינוּ אֵין אָנוּ מִשְׁתַּדְּלִים אֶלָּא לָצֵאת מֵהָעִיר, מַה לִי בִּתְנָאוֹ יוֹם אוֹ יוֹמַיִם, וְכִי יִרְדּוֹף תִּרְדְּפֵהוּ רָעָה וּגְזֵרָתוֹ עוֹמֶדֶת לְעוּמָּתוֹ. לָזֶה לֹא רָצָה מֹשֶׁה לְדַקְדֵּק בִּתְנַאי הַזְּמַן וְאָמַר ״רַק אַל יוֹסֵף פַּרְעֹה הָתֵל לְבִלְתִּי שַׁלַּח״ בְּאֵיזֶה אוֹפֶן שֶׁיִּהְיֶה, וְדִקְדֵּק לוֹמַר ״רַק״ לְשׁוֹן מִיעוּט, לוֹמַר הֲגַם שֶׁיִּהְיֶה הַשְּׁלִיחוּת בִּתְנַאי פָּחוֹת מִשְּׁלֹשָׁה יָמִים.
לא תרחיקו לכת. "Do not go very far." Pharaoh meant: "not as far as the three days you have requested." His argument was that if Moses was afraid the Egyptians would stone the Israelites if they slaughtered animals the Egyptians regarded as sacred, there was no reason to travel a distance of three days to escape that particular danger. Apparently, Moses did not make an issue of this at this time; he reasoned that the Israelites' major purpose was to get out of the urban areas, no matter how far. If Pharaoh would pursue them, Moses was certain that G'd would deal with him. At that point Moses wanted only to ensure that Pharaoh would not have a reason to renege on his promise; this is why he warned Pharaoh not to deal deceitfully with him and the Jewish people. He emphasized this by use of the word רק. Moses meant that though they would travel for a distance of less than three days the important thing for them was to get out of town for a while.
ח׳:כ"ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר מֹשֶׁ֗ה הִנֵּ֨ה אָנֹכִ֜י יוֹצֵ֤א מֵֽעִמָּךְ֙ וְהַעְתַּרְתִּ֣י אֶל־יְהוָ֔ה וְסָ֣ר הֶעָרֹ֗ב מִפַּרְעֹ֛ה מֵעֲבָדָ֥יו וּמֵעַמּ֖וֹ מָחָ֑ר רַ֗ק אַל־יֹסֵ֤ף פַּרְעֹה֙ הָתֵ֔ל לְבִלְתִּי֙ שַׁלַּ֣ח אֶת־הָעָ֔ם לִזְבֹּ֖חַ לַֽיהוָֽה׃
8:25 And Moses said, “When I leave your presence, I will plead with the LORD that the swarms of insects depart tomorrow from Pharaoh and his courtiers and his people; but let not Pharaoh again act deceitfully, not letting the people go to sacrifice to the LORD.”
8:25 And Moses said: ‘Behold, I go out from thee, and I will entreat the LORD that the swarms of flies may depart from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people, tomorrow; only let not Pharaoh deal deceitfully any more in not letting the people go to sacrifice to the LORD.’
ח׳:כ"ה וַאֲמַר משֶׁה הָא אֲנָא נָפֵק מֵעִמָּךְ וֶאֱצַלֵּי קֳדָם יְיָ וְיַעְדֵּי עָרוֹבָא מִפַּרְעֹה מֵעַבְדּוֹהִי וּמֵעַמֵּיהּ מְחָר לְחוֹד לָא יוֹסֵף פַּרְעֹה לְשַׁקָּרָא בְּדִיל דְּלָא לְשַׁלָּחָא יָת עַמָּא לְדַבָּחָא קֳדָם יְיָ:
ח׳:כ"ו וַיֵּצֵ֥א מֹשֶׁ֖ה מֵעִ֣ם פַּרְעֹ֑ה וַיֶּעְתַּ֖ר אֶל־יְהוָֽה׃
8:26 So Moses left Pharaoh’s presence and pleaded with the LORD.
8:26 And Moses went out from Pharaoh, and entreated the LORD.
ח׳:כ"ו וּנְפַק משֶׁה מִן קֳדָם פַּרְעֹה וְצַלִּי קֳדָם יְיָ:
ח׳:כ"ז וַיַּ֤עַשׂ יְהוָה֙ כִּדְבַ֣ר מֹשֶׁ֔ה וַיָּ֙סַר֙ הֶעָרֹ֔ב מִפַּרְעֹ֖ה מֵעֲבָדָ֣יו וּמֵעַמּ֑וֹ לֹ֥א נִשְׁאַ֖ר אֶחָֽד׃
8:27 And the LORD did as Moses asked: He removed the swarms of insects from Pharaoh, from his courtiers, and from his people; not one remained.
8:27 And the LORD did according to the word of Moses; and He removed the swarms of flies from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people; there remained not one.
ח׳:כ"ז וַעֲבַד יְיָ כְּפִתְגָּמָא דְמשֶׁה וְאַעְדִּי עָרוֹבָא מִפַּרְעֹה מֵעַבְדּוֹהִי וּמֵעַמֵּיהּ לָא אִשְׁתָּאַר חָד:
ח׳:כ"ח וַיַּכְבֵּ֤ד פַּרְעֹה֙ אֶת־לִבּ֔וֹ גַּ֖ם בַּפַּ֣עַם הַזֹּ֑את וְלֹ֥א שִׁלַּ֖ח אֶת־הָעָֽם׃ (פ)
8:28 But Pharaoh became stubborn this time also, and would not let the people go.
8:28 And Pharaoh hardened his heart this time also, and he did not let the people go.
ח׳:כ"ח וְיַקַּר פַּרְעֹה יָת לִבֵּיהּ אַף בְּזִמְנָא הָדָא וְלָא שַׁלַּח יָת עַמָּא:
ט׳:א׳ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה בֹּ֖א אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֑ה וְדִבַּרְתָּ֣ אֵלָ֗יו כֹּֽה־אָמַ֤ר יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י הָֽעִבְרִ֔ים שַׁלַּ֥ח אֶת־עַמִּ֖י וְיַֽעַבְדֻֽנִי׃
9:1 The LORD said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘Thus says the LORD, the God of the Hebrews: Let My people go to worship Me.
9:1 Then the LORD said unto Moses: ‘Go in unto Pharaoh, and tell him: Thus saith the LORD, the God of the Hebrews: Let My people go, that they may serve Me.
ט׳:א׳ וַאֲמַר יְיָ לְמשֶׁה עוּל לְוָת פַּרְעֹה וּתְמַלֵּל עִמֵּיהּ כִּדְנַן אֲמַר יְיָ אֱלָהָא דִיהוּדָאֵי שַׁלַּח יָת עַמִּי וְיִפְלְחוּן קֳדָמָי:
ט׳:א׳ אור החיים
1בֹּא אֶל פַּרְעֹה. כְּלָל זֶה בְּיָדְךָ – כָּל מָקוֹם שֶׁיֹּאמַר ״בֹּא אֶל פַּרְעֹה״ יְכַוֵּן לוֹמַר לוֹ שֶׁיִּכָּנֵס אֶל טְרַקְלִין שֶׁלּוֹ בְּלֹא הַשְׁאָלַת רְשׁוּת, הֲגַם שֶׁהָיוּ לוֹ כְּמִשְׁפַּט הַמְּלָכִים שׁוֹמְרֵי הַבַּיִת, אַף עַל פִּי כֵן יֵעוֹל וְיִכָּנֵס אֶצְלוֹ מִבְּלִי שְׁאֵלַת רְשׁוּת. וְכֵן הָיָה עוֹשֶׂה, כְּאָמְרָם זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה (ילקוט שמעוני קעה) כִּי כַּמָּה שׁוֹמְרִים הָיוּ לְפַרְעֹה מְזֻיָּנִים וַאֲרָיוֹת וּכְלָבִים, וְהָיָה נִכְנָס בְּאֵין מוֹנֵעַ. וּמָצָאתִי רְאָיָה בְּרוּרָה לְדִבְרֵיהֶם זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה מִמַּה שֶׁאָמַר פַּרְעֹה לְמֹשֶׁה (שמות י:כח) ״הִשָּׁמֶר לְךָ וְגוֹ׳ אַל תּוֹסֶף רְאוֹת פָּנַי״ וְגוֹ׳ – לָמָּה הֻצְרַךְ פַּרְעֹה לְהַתְרוֹת בְּמֹשֶׁה? וְהָיָה לוֹ לְצַוּוֹת לַעֲבָדָיו שׁוֹמְרֵי הַבַּיִת, כִּי כֵן מִנְהַג הַמְּלָכִים לְהַעֲמִיד שׁוֹמְרֵי הַמֶּלֶךְ וְלָהֶם יְצַו שֶׁלֹּא יַנִּיחוּהוּ לִיכָּנֵס. אֶלָּא וַדַּאי כִּי לֹא עָמְדוּ כְּנֶגְדּוֹ וַאֲפִלּוּ אֲרָיוֹת, וְזֶה נֵס עָצוּם. לָזֶה הָיָה ה׳ צָרִיךְ לוֹמַר לוֹ: ״בֹּא אֶל פַּרְעֹה״, פֵּרוּשׁ, הִכָּנֵס וַעֲלֵה אֵלָיו וְלֹא תָּשִׂים לִבְּךָ לְמוֹנֵעַ בָּעוֹלָם. וּבִזְמַן שֶׁהָיָה פַּרְעֹה יוֹצֵא הַמַּיְמָה, הָיָה אוֹמֵר לוֹ ״לֵךְ אֶל פַּרְעֹה״, כִּי שָׁם אֵין שׁוֹמְרִים לִירֹא מֵהֶם לְהִצְטָרֵךְ לוֹמַר אֵלָיו ״עֲלֵה אֵלָיו״, אֶלָּא לְצַד שֶׁאֵין זְמַן זֶה רָאוּי לַהֲלִיכָה, כִּי הוּא מוֹצִיא בּוֹלְעוֹ הַתָּעוּב וְאֵינוֹ מֵהַמּוּסָר, לָזֶה אוֹמֵר לוֹ ״לֵךְ״ אַף עַל פִּי כֵן.
בא אל פרעה, "Go to Pharaoh, etc." You may consider it a rule that whenever G'd told Moses to go to Pharaoh, He meant that Moses should enter Pharaoh's palace without waiting for permission to do so. No doubt Pharaoh had the usual complement of bodyguards at the entrance to his palace. Nonetheless Moses was commanded by G'd to ignore the presence of those guards. We have reason to believe that Moses acted in accordance with these instructions since Yalkut Shimoni item 175 describes that Pharaoh not only had armed guards but also trained lions at his palace gate but that Moses walked in without being challenged. I have found conclusive proof for the opinion expressed in the Yalkut in 10,28 where Pharaoh for the first time warns Moses not to attempt to enter the palace again. Why would Pharaoh have had to warn Moses about entering the palace unless Moses had been in the habit of doing so unchallenged up until then? Clearly, even the trained lions had respected Moses and not challenged his entry, a great miracle indeed. If G'd had to command Moses to enter Pharaoh's palace i.e. בא אל instead לך אל, "go to," the reason was that he assured Moses he would not be challenged by either the palace guards or the lions. On the other hand, whenever G'd told Moses to meet Pharaoh near the river Nile, He used the expression לך אל פרעה as there were no guards near the river Nile where Pharaoh desired privacy. The only reason G'd told Moses to go to Pharaoh there was that Moses would not have done so on his own initiative seeing Pharaoh went there to answer calls of nature, as already explained elsewhere.
ט׳:ב׳ כִּ֛י אִם־מָאֵ֥ן אַתָּ֖ה לְשַׁלֵּ֑חַ וְעוֹדְךָ֖ מַחֲזִ֥יק בָּֽם׃
9:2 For if you refuse to let them go, and continue to hold them,
9:2 For if thou refuse to let them go, and wilt hold them still,
ט׳:ב׳ אֲרֵי אִם סָרִיב אַתְּ לְשַׁלָּחָא וְעַד כְּעַן אַתְּ מַתְקֵף בְּהוֹן:
ט׳:ג׳ הִנֵּ֨ה יַד־יְהוָ֜ה הוֹיָ֗ה בְּמִקְנְךָ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה בַּסּוּסִ֤ים בַּֽחֲמֹרִים֙ בַּגְּמַלִּ֔ים בַּבָּקָ֖ר וּבַצֹּ֑אן דֶּ֖בֶר כָּבֵ֥ד מְאֹֽד׃
9:3 then the hand of the LORD will strike your livestock in the fields—the horses, the asses, the camels, the cattle, and the sheep—with a very severe pestilence.
9:3 behold, the hand of the LORD is upon thy cattle which are in the field, upon the horses, upon the asses, upon the camels, upon the herds, and upon the flocks; there shall be a very grievous murrain.
ט׳:ג׳ הָא מָחָא מִן קֳדָם יְיָ הָוְיָא בִּבְעִירָךְ דִּבְחַקְלָא בְּסוּסָוָתָא בַּחֲמָרֵי בְּגַמְלֵי בְּתוֹרֵי וּבְעָנָא מוֹתָא תַּקִּיף לַחֲדָא:
ט׳:ג׳ אור החיים
1אֲשֶׁר בַּשָּׂדֶה. פֵּרוּשׁ דַּוְקָא, וְכוּלָּן מֵתוּ דִּכְתִיב ״וַיָּמָת כָּל מִקְנֵה מִצְרָיִם״ (שמות ט:ו), פֵּרוּשׁ שֶׁהָיוּ בַּשָּׂדֶה כָּרָשׁוּם בְּדִבְרֵי ה׳.
אשר בשדה, which are in the field, etc. This is to be taken literally; they all died because the Egyptians left them in the fields as mentioned in 9,6.
ט׳:ד׳ וְהִפְלָ֣ה יְהוָ֔ה בֵּ֚ין מִקְנֵ֣ה יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וּבֵ֖ין מִקְנֵ֣ה מִצְרָ֑יִם וְלֹ֥א יָמ֛וּת מִכָּל־לִבְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל דָּבָֽר׃
9:4 But the LORD will make a distinction between the livestock of Israel and the livestock of the Egyptians, so that nothing shall die of all that belongs to the Israelites.
9:4 And the LORD shall make a division between the cattle of Israel and the cattle of Egypt; and there shall nothing die of all that belongeth to the children of Israel.’
ט׳:ד׳ וְאַפְרֵשׁ יְיָ בֵּין בְּעִירָא דְיִשְׂרָאֵל וּבֵין בְּעִירָא דְמִצְרָיִם וְלָא יְמוּת מִכָּל לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל מִדָּעַם:
ט׳:ה׳ וַיָּ֥שֶׂם יְהוָ֖ה מוֹעֵ֣ד לֵאמֹ֑ר מָחָ֗ר יַעֲשֶׂ֧ה יְהוָ֛ה הַדָּבָ֥ר הַזֶּ֖ה בָּאָֽרֶץ׃
9:5 The LORD has fixed the time: tomorrow the LORD will do this thing in the land.’”
9:5 And the LORD appointed a set time, saying: ‘Tomorrow the LORD shall do this thing in the land.’
ט׳:ה׳ וְשַׁוִּי יְיָ זִמְנָא לְמֵימָר מְחַר יַעְבֵּד יְיָ פִּתְגָּמָא הָדֵין בְּאַרְעָא:

1וַיָּשֶׂם ה׳ מוֹעֵד לֵאמֹר. פֵּרוּשׁ, הוֹדִיעַ אוֹתָם זְמַן הַמַּכָּה כְּדֵי שֶׁיַּכְנִיסוּ הַמִּקְנֶה מֵהַשָּׂדוֹת, וּכְמוֹ שֶׁמָּצִינוּ לוֹ שֶׁעָשָׂה בְּמַכַּת הַבָּרָד, וְשָׁם אָמַר ה׳ הַדְּבָרִים מְפוֹרָשִׁים דִּכְתִיב (שמות ט:יט): ״שְׁלַח הָעֵז״ וְגוֹ׳, וְכָאן אָמַר הַדְּבָרִים בְּרֶמֶז, וְהוּא מַה שֶׁנִּתְכַּוֵּן לוֹמַר בְּתֵיבַת לֵאמֹר, פֵּרוּשׁ, שֶׁיֹּאמְרוּ מֹשֶׁה וְאַהֲרֹן שִׂימַת מוֹעֵד זֶה לְפַרְעֹה וְלַמִּצְרִיִּים כִּי הוּא תַּכְלִית הַמְכֻוָּן כְּמוֹ שֶׁפֵּרַשְׁנוּ.
וישם ה׳ מועד לאמור, G'd appointed a set time, etc. He informed the Egyptians of when the plague would strike to enable them to bring their livestock indoors as we also find when the plague of hail struck (9,19). In that instance G'd told the Egyptians outright to bring their animals indoors to protect them, whereas here He only hinted at this. The hint is expressed in the Torah by the word לאמור. This meant that Moses and Aaron were to inform both Pharaoh and the Egyptians of the timing of that plague.
ט׳:ו׳ וַיַּ֨עַשׂ יְהוָ֜ה אֶת־הַדָּבָ֤ר הַזֶּה֙ מִֽמָּחֳרָ֔ת וַיָּ֕מָת כֹּ֖ל מִקְנֵ֣ה מִצְרָ֑יִם וּמִמִּקְנֵ֥ה בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֹא־מֵ֥ת אֶחָֽד׃
9:6 And the LORD did so the next day: all the livestock of the Egyptians died, but of the livestock of the Israelites not a beast died.
9:6 And the LORD did that thing on the morrow, and all the cattle of Egypt died; but of the cattle of the children of Israel died not one.

1כֹּל מִקְנֵה מִצְרָיִם. פֵּרוּשׁ, שֶׁלֹּא הִכְנִיסוּם מֵהַשָּׂדֶה, וְלָזֶה לֹא אָמַר ״אֲשֶׁר בַּשָּׂדֶה״, וְהָבֵן:
.כל מקנה מצרים, all the cattle of Egypt. This refers to the cattle the Egyptians had not brought indoors, this is why the words "in the field" are missing here.
2וּמִמִּקְנֵה בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל. שֶׁהָיוּ לָהֶם מִימֵי יַעֲקֹב וּבָנָיו שֶׁבָּאוּ מִצְרַיְמָה, גַּם אוּלַי שֶׁקָּנוּ מֵרֶוַח שֶׁהִרְוִיחוּ בְּמַכַּת הַדָּם. וְעוֹד יִרְצֶה לוֹמַר שֶׁאִם הָיוּ מִתְחַכְּמִין מֵהַמִּצְרִיִּים לִמְכּוֹר לְיִשְׂרָאֵל כְּדֵי שֶׁיִּהְיוּ נִקְרָאִים עַל שֵׁם יִשְׂרָאֵל כְּדֵי שֶׁיַּפְלִיא ה׳ בָּהֶם וְלֹא יָמוּתוּ וְהָיוּ מַעֲרִימִין – גַּם אֵלּוּ מֵתוּ. אֲבָל מִקְנֵה יִשְׂרָאֵל שֶׁהֵם כְּפִי הָאֱמֶת מִקְנֵיהֶם, לֹא מֵת. וְשִׁעוּר הַכָּתוּב הוּא: וַיָּמָת כָּל מִקְנֵה מִצְרַיִם וְחֵלֶק אֶחָד מִמִּקְנֵה בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, וּפֵרוּשׁ מ״ם – לֹא מ״ם מִקְצָת הַצֹּאן אֶלָּא מ״ם מִקְצָת מִן הַמִּקְנֶה הַנִּקְרָא עַל שֵׁם יִשְׂרָאֵל, כִּי יֵשׁ מִקְנֶה שֶׁנִּקְרָא עַל שְׁמוֹ וְהוּא שֶׁלּוֹ, וְיֵשׁ שֶׁאֵינוֹ שֶׁלּוֹ אֶלָּא שְׁמוֹ נִקְרָא עָלָיו, וְאָמַר כִּי בְּחִינָה אַחַת מִמִּקְנֵה יִשְׂרָאֵל שֶׁהֶעֱרִימוּ הַמִּצְרִיִּים לִקְרוֹתָם עַל שְׁמָם מֵתוּ. וּמִקְנֵה יִשְׂרָאֵל פֵּרוּשׁ שֶׁהוּא כְּפִי הָאֱמֶת שֶׁל יִשְׂרָאֵל לֹא מֵת מֵהֶם אֲפִלּוּ אֶחָד:
וממקנה בני ישראל, and of the cattle of the Israelites none died. They owned cattle going back to the time Jacob had come to Egypt. On the other hand, they may have acquired cattle from the money they received from the Egyptians when they sold them water during the plague of blood. It is even possible that some smart Egyptians "sold" their cattle to the Jews before the onset of the plague [much as we sell chametz to the Gentiles before Passover Ed.] so as to escape the plague and not interfere with their cattle's grazing outdoors. The Torah then would tell us that such "sales" did not protect such cattle; only the cattle which were truly Jewish-owned survived the plague without having been indoors. We ought to understand what the verse tells us: 1) "All the cattle of the Egyptians as well as some of the cattle "owned" by the Jews died;" the Torah added the extra letter מ in the line וממקנה בני ישראל to tell us about these so-called Jewish-owned cattle which died. The letter מ applied only to part of the cattle and not to part of the sheep and goats. To sum up: animals owned outright by Jews did not die; animals owned by Jews in name only, died.
ט׳:ז׳ וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח פַּרְעֹ֔ה וְהִנֵּ֗ה לֹא־מֵ֛ת מִמִּקְנֵ֥ה יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל עַד־אֶחָ֑ד וַיִּכְבַּד֙ לֵ֣ב פַּרְעֹ֔ה וְלֹ֥א שִׁלַּ֖ח אֶת־הָעָֽם׃ (פ)
9:7 When Pharaoh inquired, he found that not a head of the livestock of Israel had died; yet Pharaoh remained stubborn, and he would not let the people go.
9:7 And Pharaoh sent, and, behold, there was not so much as one of the cattle of the Israelites dead. But the heart of Pharaoh was stubborn, and he did not let the people go.
ט׳:ז׳ וּשְׁלַח פַּרְעֹה וְהָא לָא מִית מִבְּעִירָא דְיִשְׂרָאֵל עַד חָד וְאִתְיַקַּר לִבָּא דְפַרְעֹה וְלָא שַׁלַּח יָת עַמָּא:
ט׳:ח׳ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוָה֮ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֣ה וְאֶֽל־אַהֲרֹן֒ קְח֤וּ לָכֶם֙ מְלֹ֣א חָפְנֵיכֶ֔ם פִּ֖יחַ כִּבְשָׁ֑ן וּזְרָק֥וֹ מֹשֶׁ֛ה הַשָּׁמַ֖יְמָה לְעֵינֵ֥י פַרְעֹֽה׃
9:8 Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Each of you take handfuls of soot from the kiln, and let Moses throw it toward the sky in the sight of Pharaoh.
9:8 And the LORD said unto Moses and unto Aaron: ‘Take to you handfuls of soot of the furnace, and let Moses throw it heavenward in the sight of Pharaoh.
ט׳:ח׳ וַאֲמַר יְיָ לְמשֶׁה וּלְאַהֲרֹן סִיבוּ לְכוֹן מְלֵי חָפְנֵיכוֹן פִּיחָא דְאַתּוּנָא וְיִזְרְקִנֵּיהּ משֶׁה לְצֵית שְׁמַיָּא לְעֵינֵי פַרְעֹה
ט׳:ט׳ וְהָיָ֣ה לְאָבָ֔ק עַ֖ל כָּל־אֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם וְהָיָ֨ה עַל־הָאָדָ֜ם וְעַל־הַבְּהֵמָ֗ה לִשְׁחִ֥ין פֹּרֵ֛חַ אֲבַעְבֻּעֹ֖ת בְּכָל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃
9:9 It shall become a fine dust all over the land of Egypt, and cause an inflammation breaking out in boils on man and beast throughout the land of Egypt.”
9:9 And it shall become small dust over all the land of Egypt, and shall be a boil breaking forth with blains upon man and upon beast, throughout all the land of Egypt.’

שחין. לְשׁוֹן חֲמִימוּת; וְהַרְבֵּה יֵשׁ בִּלְשׁוֹן מִשְׁנָה, "שָׁנָה שְׁחוּנָה" (יומא נ"ג):

9:10 So they took soot of the kiln and appeared before Pharaoh; Moses threw it toward the sky, and it caused an inflammation breaking out in boils on man and beast.

ט׳:י"א וְלֹֽא־יָכְל֣וּ הַֽחַרְטֻמִּ֗ים לַעֲמֹ֛ד לִפְנֵ֥י מֹשֶׁ֖ה מִפְּנֵ֣י הַשְּׁחִ֑ין כִּֽי־הָיָ֣ה הַשְּׁחִ֔ין בַּֽחֲרְטֻמִּ֖ם וּבְכָל־מִצְרָֽיִם׃
9:11 The magicians were unable to confront Moses because of the inflammation, for the inflammation afflicted the magicians as well as all the other Egyptians.
9:11 And the magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils; for the boils were upon the magicians, and upon all the Egyptians.
ט׳:י"א וְלָא יָכִילוּ חָרָשַׁיָּא לְמֵיקָם קֳדָם משֶׁה מִין קֳדָם שִׁיחֲנָא אֲרֵי הֲוָה שִׁיחֲנָא בְּחָרָשַׁיָּא וּבְכָל מִצְרָאֵי:
ט׳:י"ב וַיְחַזֵּ֤ק יְהוָה֙ אֶת־לֵ֣ב פַּרְעֹ֔ה וְלֹ֥א שָׁמַ֖ע אֲלֵהֶ֑ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר דִּבֶּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶֽׁה׃ (ס)
9:12 But the LORD stiffened the heart of Pharaoh, and he would not heed them, just as the LORD had told Moses.
9:12 And the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh, and he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had spoken unto Moses.
ט׳:י"ב וְתַקִּיף יְיָ יָת לִבָּא דְפַרְעֹה וְלָא קַבִּיל מִנְּהוֹן כְּמָא דְּמַלֵּיל יְיָ עִם משֶׁה:
ט׳:י"ג וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה הַשְׁכֵּ֣ם בַּבֹּ֔קֶר וְהִתְיַצֵּ֖ב לִפְנֵ֣י פַרְעֹ֑ה וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֵלָ֗יו כֹּֽה־אָמַ֤ר יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י הָֽעִבְרִ֔ים שַׁלַּ֥ח אֶת־עַמִּ֖י וְיַֽעַבְדֻֽנִי׃
9:13 The LORD said to Moses, “Early in the morning present yourself to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘Thus says the LORD, the God of the Hebrews: Let My people go to worship Me.
9:13 And the LORD said unto Moses: ‘Rise up early in the morning, and stand before Pharaoh, and say unto him: Thus saith the LORD, the God of the Hebrews: Let My people go, that they may serve Me.
ט׳:י"ג וַאֲמַר יְיָ לְמשֶׁה אַקְדֵּם בְּצַפְרָא וְאִתְעַתַּד קֳדָם פַּרְעֹה וְתֵימַר לֵיהּ כִּדְנַן אֲמַר יְיָ אֱלָהָא דִיהוּדָאֵי שַׁלַּח יָת עַמִּי וְיִפְלְחוּן קֳדָמָי:

1הַשְׁכֵּם בַּבֹּקֶר וְגוֹ׳. שָׁלֹשׁ מִצְווֹת נִצְטַוָּה: א׳ שֶׁיֵּלֵךְ בְּהַשְׁכָּמָה, ב׳ שֶׁיִּתְיַצֵּב לְפָנָיו, פֵּרוּשׁ, שֶׁלֹּא יַרְכִּין רֹאשׁוֹ וְלֹא יַרְכִּין קוֹמָתוֹ כְּדֶרֶךְ הָעוֹמְדִים לִפְנֵי גְּדוֹלִים, אֶלָּא כְּגָדוֹל הָעוֹמֵד לִפְנֵי קָטָן, כִּי כְּבָר עֲשָׂאוֹ רִבּוֹן וְשַׁלִּיט עָלָיו. וְהוּצְרַךְ לְצַוּוֹתוֹ לְצַד שֶׁמִּטִּבְעוֹ שֶׁל מֹשֶׁה לְהַרְכִּין רֹאשׁוֹ מְעַט כְּדֶרֶךְ הַשְּׁפָלִים, לָזֶה אָמַר כִּי לִפְנֵי פַּרְעֹה לֹא יִתְנַהֵג כֵּן. עוֹד רָמַז לוֹ כִּי פְּרָט זֶה שֶׁאוֹמֵר לוֹ ״הִתְיַצֵּב״, לֹא בְּכָל מָקוֹם יָסִיר מֵעָלָיו הַהַכְנָעָה הָרָגִיל בָּהּ, אֶלָּא לִפְנֵי פַּרְעֹה, אֲבָל יִהְיֶה בְּלִבּוֹ עָנָיו וְשָׁפָל לִפְנֵי אֵל עֶלְיוֹן, וְיִהְיֶה נִצָּב בְּגוּפוֹ וְלִבּוֹ מוּכְנָע מֵאֵימַת מְלֹא כָל הָאָרֶץ כְּבוֹדוֹ, וּמִצְוָה ג׳ ״וְאָמַרְתָּ אֵלָיו״ וְגוֹ׳.
השכם בבוקר, "rise up early in the morning, etc!" Moses was given three separate instructions here. 1) To go to see Pharaoh early in the morning. 2) To adopt an erect posture when facing Pharaoh, not to bow down as was customary. G'd needed to command Moses to do this as his natural habit was to appear deferential before Pharaoh. Moses was not do discard his natural humble stance except in the presence of Pharaoh. 3) He was to communicate G'd's message to Pharaoh.
ט׳:י"ד כִּ֣י ׀ בַּפַּ֣עַם הַזֹּ֗את אֲנִ֨י שֹׁלֵ֜חַ אֶת־כָּל־מַגֵּפֹתַי֙ אֶֽל־לִבְּךָ֔ וּבַעֲבָדֶ֖יךָ וּבְעַמֶּ֑ךָ בַּעֲב֣וּר תֵּדַ֔ע כִּ֛י אֵ֥ין כָּמֹ֖נִי בְּכָל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃
9:14 For this time I will send all My plagues upon your person, and your courtiers, and your people, in order that you may know that there is none like Me in all the world.
9:14 For I will this time send all My plagues upon thy person, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people; that thou mayest know that there is none like Me in all the earth.
ט׳:י"ד אֲרֵי בְּזִמְנָא הָדָא אֲנָא שָׁלַח יָת כָּל מְחָתַי לְלִבָּךְ וּבְעַבְדָּיךְ וּבְעַמָּךְ בְּדִיל דְּתִדַּע אֲרֵי לֵית דִּכְוָתִי שַׁלִּיט בְּכָל אַרְעָא:

1כִּי בַּפַּעַם הַזֹּאת וְגוֹ׳. הוֹדִיעוֹ עֹצֶם הַמַּכָּה כְּדִין הַהַתְרָאָה שֶׁצָּרִיךְ לְהַתְרוֹת עָלָיו בַּמִּיתָה עַצְמָהּ, שֶׁאִם הִתְרוּ בּוֹ בְּמִיתָה קַלָּה וּבָאִים לַהֲמִיתוֹ בַּחֲמוּרָה – פָּטוּר כַּיָּדוּעַ.
כי בפעם הזאת…את כל מגפותי, "for this time… all My plagues." G'd informed Pharaoh of the powerful impact of the impending plague of hail. This is why the warning was as severe as the death that would follow if it were not observed. This was in accordance with the rule that if someone guilty of a sin carrying the death penalty by stoning was warned of a lesser death penalty such as strangulation, the court would not be able to convict.
2כָּל מַגֵּפֹתַי וְגוֹ׳. קָשֶׁה, הֲלֹא רָאִינוּ שֶׁהֵבִיא עָלָיו עוֹד שָׁלֹשׁ מַכּוֹת אֲחֵרוֹת. וְהָיָה נִרְאֶה לוֹמַר כִּי לְצַד שֶׁשְּׁקוּלָה זוֹ כְּנֶגֶד כֻּלָּן, וּמַה שֶׁאָמְרוּ זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה (רש״י) שֶׁשְּׁקוּלָה מַכַּת בְּכוֹרוֹת כְּנֶגֶד כָּל הַמַּכּוֹת, אוּלַי שֶׁזּוֹ שְׁקוּלָה כְּנֶגֶד כָּל שֶׁלְּפָנֶיהָ, שֶׁהֵם שֵׁשׁ מַכּוֹת, וּמַכַּת בְּכוֹרוֹת שְׁקוּלָה כְּנֶגֶד כָּל שֶׁלְּפָנֶיהָ וּמַכַּת בָּרָד בִּכְלָל, וּכְשֶׁאַתָּה בָּא לְמִנְיָן תִּהְיֶה מַכַּת בְּכוֹרוֹת שְׁקוּלָה כְּנֶגֶד י״ד מַכּוֹת, וְלֹא הִנְאַנִי דֶּרֶךְ זֶה.
כל מגפותי, "all My plagues, etc." The obvious question here is that we observe that this was not the last plague but was followed by three more plagues; what did G'd mean then when He described hail as "all My plagues?" One would have been tempted to say that the severity of that plague made it qualify for the description "all My plagues," were it not for Rashi who said that the plague of the dying of the firstborn was equal in severity to all the other plagues combined. Perhaps we have to understand this plague as being equal in severity "to all the preceding plagues together." If we accept such an interpretation the plague of the dying of the firstborn would then be equivalent to 14 plagues, something that does not seem to make too much sense.
3וְהַנָּכוֹן בְּעֵינַי שֶׁנִּתְכַּוֵּן לוֹמַר אֵלָיו כִּי בְּאֶמְצָעוּת מַכָּה זוֹ יַטֶּה לִבּוֹ לְהָבִין לְהַרְגִּישׁ בַּמַּגֵּפוֹת שֶׁהֵבִיא עָלָיו ה׳, יוּבַן כִּי בְּכָל מַכָּה וּמַכָּה שֶׁהֵבִיא עַד עַתָּה לֹא הָיָה מַחְלִיט פַּרְעֹה בְּדַעְתּוֹ כִּי הֵם מֵאֱלֹהֵי הַיְּכֹלֶת וְהָיָה תּוֹלֶה בִּמְכַשְּׁפוּת וּמַעֲשֵׂה שֵׁדִים, וְזֶה לְךָ הָאוֹת שֶׁגַּם הַחַרְטוּמִּים עוֹשִׂים כֵּן. וַהֲגַם שֶׁהָיְתָה מַכָּה שֶׁאָמְרוּ הַחַרְטוּמִּים אֶצְבַּע אֱלֹהִים הִיא, יֵשׁ מָקוֹם לְפַרְעֹה לַחְשׁוֹב כִּי אֶפְשָׁר כִּי הָאֲנָשִׁים הָהֵמָּה לֹא הִשִּׂיגוּ הַשָּׂגַת מֹשֶׁה וְאַהֲרֹן בִּמְכַשְּׁפוּת וְאוֹמְרִים כֵּן, וּלְעוֹלָם יִמָּצֵא אָדָם מְכַשֵּׁף שֶׁיַּעֲשֶׂה כֵּן. לָזֶה אָמַר אֵלָיו ה׳ כִּי בַּפַּעַם הַזֹּאת בְּאֶמְצָעוּת הַמַּכָּה אֲשֶׁר אָבִיא עָלֶיךָ אֲנִי שׁוֹלֵחַ אֶת כָּל מַגֵּפוֹתַי שֶׁכְּבָר הֵבֵאתִי עָלֶיךָ אֶל לִבְּךָ פֵּרוּשׁ שֶׁתֵּדַע כִּי לֹא מַעֲשֵׂה כִּשּׁוּף וְשֵׁדִים הֵמָּה אֶלָּא מַעֲשֵׂה אֱלֹהִים, וְהוּא אָמְרוֹ מַגֵּפוֹתַי בְּכִנּוּי הָעוֹשֶׂה אוֹתָם, כִּי בִּרְאוֹתְךָ מַכָּה נִפְלָאָה אֲשֶׁר אֵין יְכֹלֶת לְשֵׁד וְכִשּׁוּף לַעֲשׂוֹת אֲפִלּוּ דּוֹמֶה דְּדוֹמֶה לְהוֹרִיד אֵשׁ מִן הַשָּׁמַיִם בְּפִלְאֵי פְּלָאוֹת אָז לָרִאשׁוֹנוֹת תִּתְבּוֹנֵן.
I therefore feel that G'd meant to tell Pharaoh that the impact of this particular plague would change his attitude to all the plagues G'd had brought upon him thus far. Up until now Pharaoh had not really attributed the plagues to G'd's superior power, but had seen in them a display of powerful magic, the work of ghosts and demons. One of his reasons was that his own magicians appeared able to duplicate those plagues. Although his magicians had told him that they could not duplicate (or remove) the plague of כנם, insects, and this was a "finger of G'd," Pharaoh chose to interpret this as an admission that they felt outclassed by Moses and Aaron in their craft. Pharaoh was still convinced that somewhere there were magicians who could do what Moses and Aaron had demonstrated. G'd wanted to disabuse Pharaoh of such ideas and that is why He said "this time," etc., meaning that even Pharaoh would be forced to admit that no human being was capable of producing the kind of hail he was about to experience. G'd added that He would bring this to the attention of Pharaoh's heart, לבך. Up until that moment Pharaoh may have reacted only with his eyes or with his mind. G'd stressed the word מגפותי, "My plagues," to emphasise that these phenomena emanated directly from G'd. No demon or sorcerer could possibly wield such power.
ט׳:ט"ו כִּ֤י עַתָּה֙ שָׁלַ֣חְתִּי אֶת־יָדִ֔י וָאַ֥ךְ אוֹתְךָ֛ וְאֶֽת־עַמְּךָ֖ בַּדָּ֑בֶר וַתִּכָּחֵ֖ד מִן־הָאָֽרֶץ׃
9:15 I could have stretched forth My hand and stricken you and your people with pestilence, and you would have been effaced from the earth.
9:15 Surely now I had put forth My hand, and smitten thee and thy people with pestilence, and thou hadst been cut off from the earth.
ט׳:ט"ו אֲרֵי כְעַן קְרֵיב קֳדָמַי דְּאֶשְׁלַח פּוֹן יָת מַחַת גְּבֻרְתִּי וְאֶמְחֵי יָתָךְ וְיָת עַמָּךְ בְּמוֹתָא וְשֵׁיצִיאַת מִן אַרְעָא:
ט׳:ט"ז וְאוּלָ֗ם בַּעֲב֥וּר זֹאת֙ הֶעֱמַדְתִּ֔יךָ בַּעֲב֖וּר הַרְאֹתְךָ֣ אֶת־כֹּחִ֑י וּלְמַ֛עַן סַפֵּ֥ר שְׁמִ֖י בְּכָל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃
9:16 Nevertheless I have spared you for this purpose: in order to show you My power, and in order that My fame may resound throughout the world.
9:16 But in very deed for this cause have I made thee to stand, to show thee My power, and that My name may be declared throughout all the earth.
ט׳:ט"ז וּבְרַם בְּדִיל דָּא קַיֵּמִתָּךְ בְּדִיל לְאַחֲזָיוּתָךְ יָת חֵילִי וּבְדִיל דִּיהוֹן מִשְׁתָּעַן גְּבוּרַת שְׁמִי בְּכָל אַרְעָא:
ט׳:ט"ז אור החיים
1בַּעֲבוּר וְגוֹ׳ וּלְמַעַן סַפֵּר. יִרְצֶה בַּעֲבוּר הַרְאוֹתְךָ אֶת כֹּחִי אַתָּה שֶׁאָמַרְתָּ מִי ה׳, וּלְמַעַן סַפֵּר שְׁמִי בְּאֶמְצָעוּתְךָ בְּכָל הָאָרֶץ, פֵּרוּשׁוֹ, כָּל הָעוֹלָם יְסַפְּרוּ אֶת גֹּדֶל אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה לַמְּמָאֵן בִּדְבָרָיו. וְכֵן שָׁמַעְנוּ שֶׁאָמַר מֶלֶךְ אֶחָד גָּדוֹל כִּי אִם יָבֹא מְשִׁיחַ יִשְׂרָאֵל וְיַעֲשֶׂה אוֹת אוֹ מוֹפֵת כִּי לֹא יַעֲשֶׂה כְּפַרְעֹה לְמָאֵן בִּדְבַר ה׳.
בעבור תדע..ולמען תספר שמי בכל הארץ….בעבור הראותך את כתי. "In order that you should know….in order to show you My power…and in order that you will proclaim My name in the whole land, etc." You who have said: "who is G'd?" will now be the first one to proclaim My name all over the earth. Obviously, Pharaoh did not have the kind of communications media which are at our disposal today. The Torah means that as a result of what would happen to Pharaoh he would be the instrument through which the whole of mankind would become aware of what G'd does to those who refuse to accept His orders. Even nowadays kings have been heard to say that if the Jewish Messiah arrives and performs a miracle they would not repeat Pharaoh's mistakes.
