ל׳:י"ד וַיֵּ֨לֶךְ רְאוּבֵ֜ן בִּימֵ֣י קְצִיר־חִטִּ֗ים וַיִּמְצָ֤א דֽוּדָאִים֙ בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה וַיָּבֵ֣א אֹתָ֔ם אֶל־לֵאָ֖ה אִמּ֑וֹ וַתֹּ֤אמֶר רָחֵל֙ אֶל־לֵאָ֔ה תְּנִי־נָ֣א לִ֔י מִדּוּדָאֵ֖י בְּנֵֽךְ׃
30:14 Once, at the time of the wheat harvest, Reuben came upon some mandrakes in the field and brought them to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, “Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.”
30:14 And Reuben went in the days of wheat harvest, and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them unto his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah: ‘Give me, I pray thee, of thy son’s mandrakes.’

30:15 But she said to her, “Was it not enough for you to take away my husband, that you would also take my son’s mandrakes?” Rachel replied, “I promise, he shall lie with you tonight, in return for your son’s mandrakes.”
30:15 And she said unto her: ‘Is it a small matter that thou hast taken away my husband? and wouldest thou take away my son’s mandrakes also?’ And Rachel said: ‘Therefore he shall lie with thee to-night for thy son’s mandrakes.’

1הַמְעַט קַחְתֵּךְ וְגוֹ׳. כַּוָּנַת לֵאָה הִיא עַל דֶּרֶךְ אָמְרָם זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה (בראשית רבה צח) כִּי קְבִיעוּת מִטָּתוֹ שֶׁל יַעֲקֹב הָיָה אֵצֶל רָחֵל, וְלָזֶה אָמְרָה ״הַמְעַט קַחְתֵּךְ אֶת אִישִׁי״, פֵּרוּשׁ: חֵלֶק הָעוֹדֵף אֶצְלֵךְ הוּא נִגְרָע מֵחֵלֶק לֵאָה. וְאָמְרָהּ וְלָקַחַת וְגוֹ׳ תְּכַוֵּן לוֹמַר כִּי בְּחִינַת הַלֵּדָה תִּתְהַוֶּה מֵרוֹב זִקּוּק וּמֵהַתְמָדַת שְׁכִיבַת הַבַּעַל, וּכְמַאֲמָרָם זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה (חולין יא:) בְּכַמָּה מְקוֹמוֹת, וּמַעֲשֵׂה הַדּוּדָאִים הֵם סְגֻלָּה לַלֵּדָה (זוהר א:קנז.), לָזֶה אָמְרָה דַּי לָךְ קִיחַת אִישִׁי בִּתְמִידוּת אֶצְלֵךְ כַּנִּזְכָּר, וְלָמָּה תּוֹסִיף קַחַת דּוּדָאֵי בְנִי?
המעט קחתך את אישי, "Is it not enough that you have taken my husband, etc.?" Leah's words must be understood according to those rabbis who hold that Jacob's bed was permanently in Rachel's tent. She therefore argued that whatever time Jacob spent with Rachel in excess of a fair division was at her expense. When she used the expression ולקחת, "you have taken," she meant that the chances of bearing children were directly related to the frequency with which husband and wife engage in marital relations, as our sages state on several occasions (compare Chulin 11 et al in an indirect proof). The incident with the jasmin is related here as it is considered an aphrodisiac and its fragrance facilitates conception (Zohar 1,157). Leah complained that Rachel wanted the jasmin of her son in addition to almost monopolising Jacob's nights.
2וְטַעַם יַעֲקֹב שֶׁהָיָה עוֹשֶׂה הֶפְרֵשׁ בֵּין שְׁתֵּי נָשָׁיו, לְצַד שֶׁאֵין עָלָיו חִיּוּב לֵאָה זוּלַת עוֹנָה הָאֲמוּרָה בַּתּוֹרָה (שמות כא:י) ״לֹא יִגְרָע״, כִּי לֹא נְשָׂאָהּ בִּרְצוֹנוֹ וּבִידִיעָתוֹ וּכְמַעֲשֶׂה שֶׁהָיָה, מַה שֶׁאֵין כֵּן רָחֵל אִשְׁתּוֹ זֹאת וּבָהּ עָבַד פַּעַם רִאשׁוֹנָה וּשְׁנִיָּה.
The reason that Jacob did not divide his time equally between his two wives was simply that he had no obligation to sleep with Leah except when the latter had ritually purified herself after her menstruation (based on Exodus 21,10). After all he had not married her on his own initiative, as distinct from Rachel whom he had wanted to wed in the first place.
3לָכֵן יִשְׁכַּב וְגוֹ׳. יֵרָאֶה כִּי בִּרְצוֹן רָחֵל הָיָה הַדָּבָר תָּלוּי, וְאוֹמֶרֶת לָכֵן – פֵּרוּשׁ, עַל נְתִינָתֵךְ לִי דּוּדָאִים וְכוּ׳:
לכן ישכב עמך הלילה, "therefore he shall sleep with you tonight." It appears as if this depended exclusively on Rachel's wishes. Therefore she added: "in exchange for the jasmin of your son."
4אוֹ יִרְצֶה לְשׁוֹן שְׁבוּעָה, מִשּׁוּם שֶׁהֵם דְּבָרִים שֶׁאֵין נִקְנִים אֶלָּא בִּשְׁבוּעָה, כִּי לֹא הִקְנָת לָהּ דָּבָר שֶׁיֵּשׁ בּוֹ מַמָּשׁ, וְעַיֵּן מַה שֶׁכָּתַבְתִּי בְּפָסוּק (בראשית כה:לג) ״הִשָּׁבְעָה לִי״ בְּמֶכֶר בְּכוֹרַת עֵשָׂו.
Alternatively, this can be understood as an oath. There are matters which are acquired only by means of an oath, such as items that are intangible. (the fragrance of the jasmin). Compare my commentary on Genesis 25,33 when Esau sold his birthright.
ל׳:ט"ז וַיָּבֹ֨א יַעֲקֹ֣ב מִן־הַשָּׂדֶה֮ בָּעֶרֶב֒ וַתֵּצֵ֨א לֵאָ֜ה לִקְרָאת֗וֹ וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אֵלַ֣י תָּב֔וֹא כִּ֚י שָׂכֹ֣ר שְׂכַרְתִּ֔יךָ בְּדוּדָאֵ֖י בְּנִ֑י וַיִּשְׁכַּ֥ב עִמָּ֖הּ בַּלַּ֥יְלָה הֽוּא׃
30:16 When Jacob came home from the field in the evening, Leah went out to meet him and said, “You are to sleep with me, for I have hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” And he lay with her that night.
30:16 And Jacob came from the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said: ‘Thou must come in unto me; for I have surely hired thee with my son’s mandrakes.’ And he lay with her that night.

1וַתֵּצֵא לֵאָה וְגוֹ׳. טַעַם עֲשׂוֹתָהּ כָּכָה וְלֹא מִן הַמּוּסָר, לְפִי מַה שֶׁפֵּרַשְׁתִּי בְּתֵיבַת ״לָכֵן״ שֶׁאָמְרָה רָחֵל שֶׁהוּא ״עַל כֵּן״, חָשְׁשָׁה לֵאָה שֶׁתַּחְזֹר בָּהּ רָחֵל וְלָזֶה קָדְמָה וְיָצְאָה. וּלְפִי מַה שֶׁפֵּרַשְׁתִּי ״לָכֵן״ שְׁבוּעָה, לְצַד שֶׁלֹּא דִּקְדְּקָה רָחֵל לוֹמַר הַלַּיְלָה הַזֹּאת, חָשְׁשָׁה שֶׁתִּדְחֶה אוֹתָהּ לְלַיְלָה אַחֶרֶת, וַהֲרֵי זוֹ זְרִיזָה וְנִשְׂכֶּרֶת.
ותצא לאה, Leah went out, etc.. The reason Leah went to meet Jacob, something that was not considered good manners was that she was afraid Rachel might change her mind. If we accept the view that Rachel swore to her and therefore could not go back on her word we must justify Leah's behaviour as being based on the lack of precision of Rachel's promise. Rachel had not said that Jacob could sleep with Leah on that night. Leah did not want to be put off. By displaying eagerness to sleep with her husband she profited by becoming pregnant.
2עוֹד יֵשׁ לָתֵת טַעַם לְלֵאָה, כִּי מִדַּת חֲסִידוּת עָשְׂתָה שֶׁלֹּא הִנִּיחָה עַד שֶׁיִּכָּנֵס אוֹתוֹ צַדִּיק לְאֹהֶל רָחֵל וְתוֹצִיאֶנּוּ מִשָּׁם, כִּי יֵשׁ בָּזֶה הַקְפָּדָה וְצַעַר גָּדוֹל לְרָחֵל וְקִנְאָה גְּדוֹלָה. לָזֶה קָדְמָה קוֹדֶם שֶׁיִּכָּנֵס אֶצְלָהּ, וְאֵין זֶה אֶלָּא מִדָּה טוֹבָה וַחֲסִידָה, וְכָל מְגַמָּתָהּ שֶׁל אוֹתָהּ צַדֶּקֶת לְהַעֲמִיד נִטְעֵי נַעֲמָן. וַה׳ עֵד בַּדָּבָר כִּי נָתַן שְׂכָרָהּ דִּכְתִיב ״וַיִּשְׁמַע״ וְגוֹ׳ (בראשית ל:יז), וְעַיֵּן בְּסָמוּךְ מַה שֶׁפֵּרַשְׁתִּי (ספרים אחרים שפירש רש״י) בְּפָסוּק זֶה.
Leah may also have walked towards her husband in order not to have to call him to her after Jacob had already entered Rachel's tent. This would have been an embarassment for her sister Rachel. It might have resulted in open jealousy. Leah's virtuous considerations therefore outweighed the unconventional manner of her behaviour. It is clear that G'd appreciated this as He rewarded her by letting her conceive; the Torah wrote: "G'd listened to Leah and she conceived." Look at my commentary on that verse
3שָׂכוֹר שְׂכַרְתִּיךָ וְגוֹ׳. פֵּירוּשׁ: נָתַתִּי שָׂכָר לַזּוּלַת בַּעַדְךָ. עוֹד נִתְכַּוְּנָה שֶׁשָּׂכְרָה שְׁנֵי דְּבָרִים: לִינָה וְזִיקָה.
שכר שכרתיך, "I have rented you, etc." This means: "I have paid a fee to someone for the pleasure of your company." The repetition of the word שכר indicates that she referred to two things, i.e. that Jacob stay with her for the night and that he should have marital relations with her.
4בַּלַּיְלָה הוּא. פֵּירוּשׁ בִּרְצוֹנוֹ וְדַעְתּוֹ שֶׁהִסְכִּים עַל הַדָּבָר.
בלילה הוא, that night. This is simply a reference to the fact that Jacob fully agreed.
ל׳:י"ז וַיִּשְׁמַ֥ע אֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶל־לֵאָ֑ה וַתַּ֛הַר וַתֵּ֥לֶד לְיַעֲקֹ֖ב בֵּ֥ן חֲמִישִֽׁי׃
30:17 God heeded Leah, and she conceived and bore him a fifth son.
30:17 And God hearkened unto Leah, and she conceived, and bore Jacob a fifth son.
ל׳:י"ז וְקַבִּיל יְיָ צְלוֹתַהּ דְּלֵאָה וְעַדִּיאַת וִילִידַת לְיַעֲקֹב בַּר חֲמִישָׁאִי:
ל׳:י"ז אור החיים
1וַיִּשְׁמַע אֱלֹהִים. מַגִּיד שֶׁהִתְפַּלְּלָה לַה׳.
וישמע אלוקים, G'd heard, etc. This means that Leah prayed to G'd first.
2עוֹד יִרְצֶה כִּי הֵבִין וְיָדַע כַּוָּנָתָהּ בַּמַּעֲשֶׂה, שֶׁהוּא לְתַכְלִית מִצְוָה וְאַהֲבָתָהּ בְּהַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא וּבְמִצְווֹתָיו. וְקִלְקְלָה הַשּׁוּרָה בְּמַעֲשֶׂה זֶה, גַּם ה׳ קִלְקֵל הַשּׁוּרָה, כִּי כְּפִי הַשּׁוּרָה לֹא הָיוּ עוֹלִים לָהּ אֶלָּא אַרְבָּעָה, וַתַּהַר וַתֵּלֶד בֵּן חֲמִישִׁי יוֹתֵר מֵהַשּׁוּרָה וּבֵן שִׁשִּׁי, מִדָּה כְּנֶגֶד מִדָּה.
It may also mean that G'd had understood the reasons for Leah's behaviour. She was motivated by her love for G'd and her desire to fulfil His commandments. If, in the process, she had committed an error of etiquette, G'd on His part did the same by allocating to her more than the four sons originally intended. The other two sons were in recognition of Leah's pure motives.
ל׳:י"ח וַתֹּ֣אמֶר לֵאָ֗ה נָתַ֤ן אֱלֹהִים֙ שְׂכָרִ֔י אֲשֶׁר־נָתַ֥תִּי שִׁפְחָתִ֖י לְאִישִׁ֑י וַתִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ יִשָּׂשכָֽר׃
30:18 And Leah said, “God has given me my rewardeHeb. sekhari, connected with “Issachar.” for having given my maid to my husband.” So she named him Issachar.
30:18 And Leah said: ‘God hath given me my hire, because I gave my handmaid to my husband. And she called his name Issachar.
ל׳:י"ח וַאֲמֶרֶת לֵאָה יְהַב יְיָ אַגְרִי דִּיהָבִית אַמְתִי לְבַעְלִי וּקְרַת שְׁמֵיהּ יִשָּׂשׂכָר:
ל׳:י"ט וַתַּ֤הַר עוֹד֙ לֵאָ֔ה וַתֵּ֥לֶד בֵּן־שִׁשִּׁ֖י לְּיַעֲקֹֽב׃
30:19 When Leah conceived again and bore Jacob a sixth son,
30:19 And Leah conceived again, and bore a sixth son to Jacob.
ל׳:י"ט וְעַדִּיאַת עוֹד לֵאָה וִילִידַת בַּר שִׁתִיתָאִי לְיַעֲקֹב:
ל׳:כ׳ וַתֹּ֣אמֶר לֵאָ֗ה זְבָדַ֨נִי אֱלֹהִ֥ים ׀ אֹתִי֮ זֵ֣בֶד טוֹב֒ הַפַּ֙עַם֙ יִזְבְּלֵ֣נִי אִישִׁ֔י כִּֽי־יָלַ֥דְתִּי ל֖וֹ שִׁשָּׁ֣ה בָנִ֑ים וַתִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־שְׁמ֖וֹ זְבֻלֽוּן׃
30:20 Leah said, “God has given me a choice gift;fHeb. zebadani … zebed. this time my husband will exalt me,gHeb. yizbeleni; others “will dwell with me.” for I have borne him six sons.” So she named him Zebulun.
30:20 And Leah said: ‘God hath endowed me with a good dowry; now will my husband dwell with me, because I have borne him six sons.’ And she called his name Zebulun.
ל׳:כ׳ וַאֲמֶרֶת לֵאָה יְהַב יְיָ יָתֵיהּ לִי חֳלַק טַב הָדָא זִמְנָא יְהֵי מְדוֹרֵיהּ דְּבַעְלִי לְוָתִי אֲרֵי יְלֵידִית לֵיהּ שִׁתָּא בְנִין וּקְרַת יָת שְׁמֵיהּ זְבֻלוּן:
ל׳:כ"א וְאַחַ֖ר יָ֣לְדָה בַּ֑ת וַתִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־שְׁמָ֖הּ דִּינָֽה׃
30:21 Last, she bore him a daughter, and named her Dinah.
30:21 And afterwards she bore a daughter, and called her name Dinah.
ל׳:כ"א וּבָתַר כֵּן יְלִידַת בְּרַתָּא וּקְרַת יָת שְׁמַהּ דִּינָה:
ל׳:כ"ב וַיִּזְכֹּ֥ר אֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶת־רָחֵ֑ל וַיִּשְׁמַ֤ע אֵלֶ֙יהָ֙ אֱלֹהִ֔ים וַיִּפְתַּ֖ח אֶת־רַחְמָֽהּ׃
30:22 Now God remembered Rachel; God heeded her and opened her womb.
30:22 And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and opened her womb.
ל׳:כ"ב וְעַל דּוּכְרָנָא דְרָחֵל קֳדָם יְיָ וְקַבִּיל צְלוֹתַהּ יְיָ וִיהַב לַהּ עִדּוּי:
ויזכור אלהים את רחל. זָכַר לָהּ שֶׁמָּסְרָה סִימָנֶיהָ לַאֲחוֹתָהּ וְשֶׁהָיְתָה מְצֵרָה שֶׁמָּא תַּעֲלֶה בְּגוֹרָלוֹ שֶׁל עֵשָׂו, שֶׁמָּא יְגָרְשֶׁנָּה יַעֲקֹב לְפִי שֶׁאֵין לָהּ בָּנִים, וְאַף עֵשָׂו הָרָשָׁע כָּךְ עָלָה בְּלִבּוֹ כְּשֶׁשָּׁמַע שֶׁאֵין לָהּ בָּנִים; הוּא שֶׁיִּסֵּד הַפַּיָּט הָאַדְמוֹן כְּבָט שֶׁלֹּא חָלָה, צָבָה לְקַחְתָּהּ לוֹ וְנִתְבֶּהָלָה:

1וַיִּזְכֹּר אֱלֹהִים וְגוֹ׳. מַגִּיד הַכָּתוּב כִּי הֲגַם שֶׁעָלָה זִכְרוֹנָהּ לְפָנָיו, עוֹד הוּצְרְכָה לִתְפִלָּה, כְּאָמְרוֹ ״וַיִּשְׁמַע אֵלֶיהָ״ וְגוֹ׳:
ויזכר אלוקים את רחל, G'd remembered Rachel, etc. We hear from this verse that although Rachel's plight was on G'd's mind, she also needed to pray in order to conceive and give birth. This is why the Torah added: "G'd heard."
2עוֹד יוֹדִיעַ הַכָּתוּב כִּי ה׳ זוֹכֵר אֶת חֲסִידָיו מִבְּלִי שֶׁיִּצְעֲקוּ אֵלָיו, לָזֶה אָמַר וַיִּזְכֹּר וְגוֹ׳ וְאַחַר כָּךְ וַיִּשְׁמַע וְגוֹ׳, לוֹמַר שֶׁקּוֹדֶם שֶׁהִתְפַּלְּלָה עָלָה זִכְרוֹנָהּ לְפָנָיו יִתְבָּרַךְ:
This verse also informs us that G'd remembers His pious ones even before they cry out to Him. This is why the Torah first mentions the fact that G'd remembered Rachel.
ל׳:כ"ג וַתַּ֖הַר וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֑ן וַתֹּ֕אמֶר אָסַ֥ף אֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶת־חֶרְפָּתִֽי׃
30:23 She conceived and bore a son, and said, “God has taken awayhHeb. ‘asaph. my disgrace.”
30:23 And she conceived, and bore a son, and said: ‘God hath taken away my reproach.’
ל׳:כ"ג וְעַדִּיאַת וִילִידַת בָּר וַאֲמֶרֶת כְּנַשׁ יְיָ יָת חִסּוּדִי:
ל׳:כ"ד וַתִּקְרָ֧א אֶת־שְׁמ֛וֹ יוֹסֵ֖ף לֵאמֹ֑ר יֹסֵ֧ף יְהוָ֛ה לִ֖י בֵּ֥ן אַחֵֽר׃
30:24 So she named him Joseph, which is to say, “May the LORD addiHeb. yoseph. another son for me.”
30:24 And she called his name Joseph, saying: ‘The LORD add to me another son.’
ל׳:כ"ד וּקְרַת יָת שְׁמֵיהּ יוֹסֵף לְמֵימָר יוֹסֵף יְיָ לִי בַּר אָחֳרָן:
ל׳:כ"ה וַיְהִ֕י כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר יָלְדָ֥ה רָחֵ֖ל אֶת־יוֹסֵ֑ף וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יַעֲקֹב֙ אֶל־לָבָ֔ן שַׁלְּחֵ֙נִי֙ וְאֵ֣לְכָ֔ה אֶל־מְקוֹמִ֖י וּלְאַרְצִֽי׃
30:25 After Rachel had borne Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, “Give me leave to go back to my own homeland.
30:25 And it came to pass, when Rachel had borne Joseph, that Jacob said unto Laban: ‘Send me away, that I may go unto mine own place, and to my country.
ל׳:כ"ה וַהֲוָה כַּד יְלִידַת רָחֵל יָת יוֹסֵף וַאֲמַר יַעֲקֹב לְלָבָן שַׁלְּחַנִי וְאֵיהַךְ לְאַתְרִי וּלְאַרְעִי:
ל׳:כ"ו תְּנָ֞ה אֶת־נָשַׁ֣י וְאֶת־יְלָדַ֗י אֲשֶׁ֨ר עָבַ֧דְתִּי אֹֽתְךָ֛ בָּהֵ֖ן וְאֵלֵ֑כָה כִּ֚י אַתָּ֣ה יָדַ֔עְתָּ אֶת־עֲבֹדָתִ֖י אֲשֶׁ֥ר עֲבַדְתִּֽיךָ׃
30:26 Give me my wives and my children, for whom I have served you, that I may go; for well you know what services I have rendered you.”
30:26 Give me my wives and my children for whom I have served thee, and let me go; for thou knowest my service wherewith I have served thee.’
ל׳:כ"ו הַב יָת נְשַׁי וְיָת בְּנַי דִּי פְלָחִית יָתָךְ בְּהֵן וְאֵזֵיל אֲרֵי אַתְּ יְדַעְתָּ יָת פָּלְחָנִי דִּפְלָחִתָּךְ:
ל׳:כ"ז וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ לָבָ֔ן אִם־נָ֛א מָצָ֥אתִי חֵ֖ן בְּעֵינֶ֑יךָ נִחַ֕שְׁתִּי וַיְבָרֲכֵ֥נִי יְהוָ֖ה בִּגְלָלֶֽךָ׃
30:27 But Laban said to him, “If you will indulge me,jLit. “If I have found favor in your eyes.” I have learned by divination that the LORD has blessed me on your account.”
30:27 And Laban said unto him: ‘If now I have found favour in thine eyes—I have observed the signs, and the LORD hath blessed me for thy sake.’
