ל"ב:י"ד וַיָּ֥לֶן שָׁ֖ם בַּלַּ֣יְלָה הַה֑וּא וַיִּקַּ֞ח מִן־הַבָּ֧א בְיָד֛וֹ מִנְחָ֖ה לְעֵשָׂ֥ו אָחִֽיו׃
32:14 After spending the night there, he selected from what was at hand these presents for his brother Esau:
32:14 And he lodged there that night; and took of that which he had with him a present for Esau his brother:
ל"ב:י"ד וּבָת תַּמָּן בְּלֵילְיָא הַהוּא וּנְסִיב מִן דְּאַיְתִי בִידֵיהּ תִּקְרֻבְתָּא לְעֵשָׂו אֲחוּהִי:
ל"ב:ט"ו עִזִּ֣ים מָאתַ֔יִם וּתְיָשִׁ֖ים עֶשְׂרִ֑ים רְחֵלִ֥ים מָאתַ֖יִם וְאֵילִ֥ים עֶשְׂרִֽים׃
32:15 200 she-goats and 20 he-goats; 200 ewes and 20 rams;
32:15 two hundred she-goats and twenty he-goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,

1עִזִּים מָאתַיִם וְגוֹ׳. שָׁמַעְתִּי מִמּוֹרִי זְקֵנִי זֵכֶר צַדִּיק וְקָדוֹשׁ לִבְרָכָה, שֶׁנִּתְכַּוֵּן יַעֲקֹב בְּחֶשְׁבּוֹן שֶׁשָּׁלַח מִבַּעֲלֵי חַיִּים כְּחֶשְׁבּוֹן שֵׂעִיר שֶׁעוֹלֶה בּוֹ תק״ף, וְלָזֶה שָׁלַח בְּחֶשְׁבּוֹן עִזִּים וּרְחֵלִים ת״מ וּגְמַלִּים שְׁלֹשִׁים עִם בְּנֵיהֶם הֵם שִׁשִּׁים, הֲרֵי ת״ק, פָּרוֹת וּפָרִים חֲמִשִּׁים, אֲתוֹנוֹת וַעֲיָרִים שְׁלֹשִׁים הֲרֵי תק״ף, לִשְׁבֹּר תָּקְפּוֹ.
עזים מאחים, two hundred goats, etc. I have heard from my grandfather of blessed memory that Jacob intended that the total number of animals he sent as a gift to Esau should correspond to the numeriacl value of the letters in the word שעיר (580). Therefore he sent a total of 440 sheep and goats, thirty camels plus a young one each, i.e. a total of 60 camels. Add to this the forty cows and ten bulls, the twenty she-asses and ten donkeys, and you have a total of 580. The word שעיר symbolises Esau's power; the animals Jacob sent him as a gift were supposed to neutralise that power.

32:16 30 milch camels with their colts; 40 cows and 10 bulls; 20 she-asses and 10 he-asses.
32:16 thirty milch camels and their colts, forty kine and ten bulls, twenty she-asses and ten foals.
ל"ב:ט"ז גַּמְלֵי מֶנְקָתָא וּבְנֵיהוֹן תְּלָתִין תּוֹרְתָא אַרְבְּעִין וְתוֹרֵי עַסְרָא אַתְנָן עֶסְרִין וְעִירֵי עַסְרָא:
ל"ב:י"ז וַיִּתֵּן֙ בְּיַד־עֲבָדָ֔יו עֵ֥דֶר עֵ֖דֶר לְבַדּ֑וֹ וַ֤יֹּאמֶר אֶל־עֲבָדָיו֙ עִבְר֣וּ לְפָנַ֔י וְרֶ֣וַח תָּשִׂ֔ימוּ בֵּ֥ין עֵ֖דֶר וּבֵ֥ין עֵֽדֶר׃
32:17 These he put in the charge of his servants, drove by drove, and he told his servants, “Go on ahead, and keep a distance between droves.”
32:17 And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself; and said unto his servants: ‘Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.’
ל"ב:י"ז וִיהַב בְּיַד עַבְדּוֹהִי עֶדְרָא עֶדְרָא בִּלְחוֹדוֹהִי וַאֲמַר לְעַבְדּוֹהִי עִבָּרוּ קֳדָמַי וּרְוָחָא תְּשַׁוּוּן בֵּין עֶדְרָא וּבֵין עֶדְרָא:
ל"ב:י"ח וַיְצַ֥ו אֶת־הָרִאשׁ֖וֹן לֵאמֹ֑ר כִּ֣י יִֽפְגָּשְׁךָ֞ עֵשָׂ֣ו אָחִ֗י וִשְׁאֵֽלְךָ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר לְמִי־אַ֙תָּה֙ וְאָ֣נָה תֵלֵ֔ךְ וּלְמִ֖י אֵ֥לֶּה לְפָנֶֽיךָ׃
32:18 He instructed the one in front as follows, “When my brother Esau meets you and asks you, ‘Whose man are you? Where are you going? And whose [animals] are these ahead of you?’
32:18 And he commanded the foremost, saying: ‘When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying: Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?
ל"ב:י"ח וּפַקֵּיד יָת קַדְמָאָה לְמֵימָר אֲרֵי יְעַרְעִנָּךְ עֵשָׂו אָחִי וּשְׁאֵלִנָּךְ לְמֵימָר לְמָן אַתְּ וּלְאָן אַתְּ אָזֵל וּלְמָן אִלֵּין דִּקֳדָמָךְ:

1וַיְצַו אֶת וְגוֹ׳ לֵאמֹר. אָמְרוֹ לֵאמֹר לְלֹא צֹרֶךְ, פֵּירוּשׁ, הֲגַם שֶׁלֹּא יִשְׁאַל בְּנוֹסַח זֶה, אֶלָּא שֶׁיֹּאמַר הַשְּׁאֵלָה בְּלָשׁוֹן שֶׁיִּהְיֶה מוּבָן מִמֶּנּוּ שֶׁשּׁוֹאֵל כֵּן.
ויצו את הראשון לאמור, He instructed the first one (messenger) to say, etc. The apparently superfluous word לאמו was that even if Esau were not to phrase his enquiry in exactly the words Jacob assumed he would, he would no doubt use words to that effect.
2אוֹ יֹאמַר שֶׁיִּתְחַיְּבוּ לְהָשִׁיב הֲגַם שֶׁלֹּא תִּהְיֶה הַשְּׁאֵלָה מִפֶּה אֶל פֶּה אֲלֵיהֶם, אֶלָּא שֶׁיִּשְׁאַל הוּא לְזוּלַת וְהַזּוּלַת יִשְׁאַל אוֹתָם, וְהוּא אָמְרוֹ ״וּשְׁאֵלְךָ״ הוּא, אוֹ שֶׁיֹּאמַר לִשְׁאוֹל אוֹתְךָ. אוֹ עַל זֶה הַדֶּרֶךְ, ״וּשְׁאֵלְךָ״ וְתִהְיֶה הַשְּׁאֵלָה לְזוּלַת לֵאמֹר לְךָ.
Jacob may also have used the word לאמור to tell his messengers to use exactly this formula even if they would not be asked directly by Esau but by some intermediary. He added the word ושאלך, "and if he will ask you," to indicate that such a question might be addressed to the messenger second hand, not by Esau himself.
ל"ב:י"ט וְאָֽמַרְתָּ֙ לְעַבְדְּךָ֣ לְיַעֲקֹ֔ב מִנְחָ֥ה הִוא֙ שְׁלוּחָ֔ה לַֽאדֹנִ֖י לְעֵשָׂ֑ו וְהִנֵּ֥ה גַם־ה֖וּא אַחֲרֵֽינוּ׃
32:19 you shall answer, ‘Your servant Jacob’s; they are a gift sent to my lord Esau; and [Jacob] himself is right behind us.’”
32:19 then thou shalt say: They are thy servant Jacob’s; it is a present sent unto my lord, even unto Esau; and, behold, he also is behind us.’
ל"ב:י"ט וְתֵימַר לְעַבְדָּךְ לְיַעֲקֹב תִּקְרֻבְתָּא הִיא דִּמְשַׁלְּחָא לְרִבּוֹנִי לְעֵשָׂו וְהָא אַף הוּא אָתֵי בַתְרָנָא:

1וְאָמַרְתָּ לְעַבְדְּךָ וְגוֹ׳. פֵּירוּשׁ: כְּנֶגֶד אָמְרוֹ ״לְמִי אַתָּה״ – תְּשׁוּבָה שֶׁל ״עַבְדְּךָ יַעֲקֹב״, כְּנֶגֶד ״וְאָנָה תֵלֵךְ״ – לְהוֹלִיךְ מִנְחָה, וְהוּא אָמְרוֹ ״מִנְחָה שְׁלוּחָה״, וּכְנֶגֶד ״וּלְמִי״ – ״לַאדֹנִי לְעֵשָׂו״.
ואמרת לעבדך ליעקב, you will say: "to your servant, to Jacob." This means that the appropriate answer to the question: "who do you belong to?" would be: "to your servant Jacob;" the appropriate reply to the question: "where are you headed for?" is "to bring a gift which has been despatched." The appropriate answer to the question: "who is the gift for?" is "for my lord, for Esau."
ל"ב:כ׳ וַיְצַ֞ו גַּ֣ם אֶת־הַשֵּׁנִ֗י גַּ֚ם אֶת־הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֔י גַּ֚ם אֶת־כָּל־הַהֹ֣לְכִ֔ים אַחֲרֵ֥י הָעֲדָרִ֖ים לֵאמֹ֑ר כַּדָּבָ֤ר הַזֶּה֙ תְּדַבְּר֣וּן אֶל־עֵשָׂ֔ו בְּמֹצַאֲכֶ֖ם אֹתֽוֹ׃
32:20 He gave similar instructions to the second one, and the third, and all the others who followed the droves, namely, “Thus and so shall you say to Esau when you reach him.
32:20 And he commanded also the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying: ‘In this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him;
ל"ב:כ׳ וּפַקִּיד אַף יָת תִּנְיָנָא אַף יָת תְּלִיתָאָה אַף יָת כָּל דְּאָזְלִין בָּתַר עֲדָרַיָּא לְמֵימָר כְּפִתְגָּמָא הָדֵין תְּמַלְּלוּן עִם עֵשָׂו כַּד תַּשְׁכְּחוּן יָתֵיהּ:
ל"ב:כ"א וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֕ם גַּ֗ם הִנֵּ֛ה עַבְדְּךָ֥ יַעֲקֹ֖ב אַחֲרֵ֑ינוּ כִּֽי־אָמַ֞ר אֲכַפְּרָ֣ה פָנָ֗יו בַּמִּנְחָה֙ הַהֹלֶ֣כֶת לְפָנָ֔י וְאַחֲרֵי־כֵן֙ אֶרְאֶ֣ה פָנָ֔יו אוּלַ֖י יִשָּׂ֥א פָנָֽי׃
32:21 And you shall add, ‘And your servant Jacob himself is right behind us.’” For he reasoned, “If I propitiate him with presents in advance, and then face him, perhaps he will show me favor.”
32:21 and ye shall say: Moreover, behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us.’ For he said: ‘I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept me.’
ל"ב:כ"א וְתֵימְרוּן אַף הָא עַבְדָּךְ יַעֲקֹב אָתֵי בַתְרָנָא אֲרֵי אֲמַר אַנְחִנֵּיהּ לְרוּגְזֵיהּ בְּתִקְרֻבְתָּא דְּאָזְלַת לָקֳדָמַי וּבָתַר כֵּן אֶחֱזֵי אַפּוֹהִי מָאִים יִסַּב אַפָּי:

1וַאֲמַרְתֶּם וְגוֹ׳. פֵּרוּשׁ: טַעַם שֶׁהִנֵּה הוּא אַחֲרֵינוּ וְלֹא קוֹדֶם וְלֹא עִמָּנוּ, ״כִּי אָמַר אֲכַפְּרָה״ וְגוֹ׳ קוֹדֶם, וְאַחַר כָּךְ אֶרְאֶה פָנָיו.
ואמרתם גם הנה עבדך יעקב אחרנו, you will say: "your servant Jacob is also following behind us." The messengers explained why Jacob neither preceded nor accompanied them. The reason was simply that Jacob wanted to appease Esau's anger so that the latter would receive him in a good frame of mind.
ל"ב:כ"ב וַתַּעֲבֹ֥ר הַמִּנְחָ֖ה עַל־פָּנָ֑יו וְה֛וּא לָ֥ן בַּלַּֽיְלָה־הַה֖וּא בַּֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃
32:22 And so the gift went on ahead, while he remained in camp that night.
32:22 So the present passed over before him; and he himself lodged that night in the camp.
ל"ב:כ"ב וַעֲבָרַת תִּקְרֻבְתָּא עַל אַפּוֹהִי וְהוּא בָת בְּלֵילְיָא הַהוּא בְּמַשְׁרִיתָא:
ל"ב:כ"ג וַיָּ֣קָם ׀ בַּלַּ֣יְלָה ה֗וּא וַיִּקַּ֞ח אֶת־שְׁתֵּ֤י נָשָׁיו֙ וְאֶת־שְׁתֵּ֣י שִׁפְחֹתָ֔יו וְאֶת־אַחַ֥ד עָשָׂ֖ר יְלָדָ֑יו וַֽיַּעֲבֹ֔ר אֵ֖ת מַעֲבַ֥ר יַבֹּֽק׃
32:23 That same night he arose, and taking his two wives, his two maidservants, and his eleven children, he crossed the ford of the Jabbok.
32:23 And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two handmaids, and his eleven children, and passed over the ford of the Jabbok.
ל"ב:כ"ג וְקָם בְּלֵילְיָא הוּא וּדְבַר יָת תַּרְתֵּין נְשׁוֹהִי וְיָת תַּרְתֵּין לְחֵינָתֵיהּ וְיָת חַד עֲסַר בְּנוֹהִי וַעֲבַר יָת מַעֲבַר יוּבְקָא:
ל"ב:כ"ד וַיִּקָּחֵ֔ם וַיַּֽעֲבִרֵ֖ם אֶת־הַנָּ֑חַל וַֽיַּעֲבֵ֖ר אֶת־אֲשֶׁר־לוֹ׃
32:24 After taking them across the stream, he sent across all his possessions.
32:24 And he took them, and sent them over the stream, and sent over that which he had.
ל"ב:כ"ד וּדְבָרִנּוּן וְעַבָּרִנּוּן יָת נַחְלָא וְאַעְבַּר יָת דִּילֵיהּ:
ל"ב:כ"ה וַיִּוָּתֵ֥ר יַעֲקֹ֖ב לְבַדּ֑וֹ וַיֵּאָבֵ֥ק אִישׁ֙ עִמּ֔וֹ עַ֖ד עֲל֥וֹת הַשָּֽׁחַר׃
32:25 Jacob was left alone. And a man wrestled with him until the break of dawn.
32:25 And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.
ל"ב:כ"ה וְאִשְׁתָּאַר יַעֲקֹב בִּלְחוֹדוֹהִי וְאִשְׁתַּדֵּל גַּבְרָא עִמֵּיהּ עַד דִּסְלֵק צַפְרָא:
ל"ב:כ"ו וַיַּ֗רְא כִּ֣י לֹ֤א יָכֹל֙ ל֔וֹ וַיִּגַּ֖ע בְּכַף־יְרֵכ֑וֹ וַתֵּ֙קַע֙ כַּף־יֶ֣רֶךְ יַעֲקֹ֔ב בְּהֵֽאָבְק֖וֹ עִמּֽוֹ׃
32:26 When he saw that he had not prevailed against him, he wrenched Jacob’s hip at its socket, so that the socket of his hip was strained as he wrestled with him.
32:26 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was strained, as he wrestled with him.
ל"ב:כ"ו וַחֲזָא אֲרֵי לָא יָכִיל לֵיהּ וּקְרֵיב בִּפְתֵי יַרְכֵּיהּ וְזָע פְּתֵי יַרְכָּא דְיַעֲקֹב בְּאִשְׁתַּדָּלוּתֵיהּ עִמֵּיהּ:
ל"ב:כ"ז וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שַׁלְּחֵ֔נִי כִּ֥י עָלָ֖ה הַשָּׁ֑חַר וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ לֹ֣א אֲשַֽׁלֵּחֲךָ֔ כִּ֖י אִם־בֵּרַכְתָּֽנִי׃
32:27 Then he said, “Let me go, for dawn is breaking.” But he answered, “I will not let you go, unless you bless me.”
32:27 And he said: ‘Let me go, for the day breaketh.’ And he said: ‘I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.’
ל"ב:כ"ז וַאֲמַר שַׁלְּחַנִי אֲרֵי סְלִיק צַפְרָא וַאֲמַר לָא אֲשַׁלְּחִנָּךְ אֶלָּהֵין בֵּרַכְתָּנִי:

1לֹא אֲשַׁלֵּחֲךָ וְגוֹ׳. זֶה הוּא שֶׁאָמַר ״כִּי שָׂרִיתָ וְגוֹ׳ וַתּוּכָל״, כִּי מָשַׁל בּוֹ וְלֹא הָיָה הַמַּלְאָךְ יָכוֹל לַהֲלוֹךְ זוּלַת רְצוֹנוֹ. וְאָמְרוֹ כִּי אִם בֵּרַכְתָּנִי פֵּרוּשׁ שֶׁלֹּא יוּזַּק מִתְּקִיעַת יְרֵכוֹ. אוֹ לְצַד שֶׁהִכִּיר בּוֹ הֱיוֹתוֹ מַלְאָךְ הִשְׁתַּדֵּל שֶׁיְּבָרְכֵהוּ.
לא אשלחך, "I will not let you depart, etc." When the angel said to Jacob that he had struggled with a celestial being and had prevailed, he meant that he now could not depart without Jacob's permission. When Jacob said: "unless you bless me," he meant that he would assure him that the injury he caused to Jacob's hip-joint would not be permanent. It is also possible that the mere fact that Jacob now realised he had wrestled with an angel prompted him to ask for a blessing from that angel.
ל"ב:כ"ח וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֵלָ֖יו מַה־שְּׁמֶ֑ךָ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר יַעֲקֹֽב׃
32:28 Said the other, “What is your name?” He replied, “Jacob.”
32:28 And he said unto him: ‘What is thy name?’ And he said: ‘Jacob.’
ל"ב:כ"ח וַאֲמַר לֵיהּ מָה שְׁמָךְ וַאֲמַר יַעֲקֹב:
ל"ב:כ"ט וַיֹּ֗אמֶר לֹ֤א יַעֲקֹב֙ יֵאָמֵ֥ר עוֹד֙ שִׁמְךָ֔ כִּ֖י אִם־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל כִּֽי־שָׂרִ֧יתָ עִם־אֱלֹהִ֛ים וְעִם־אֲנָשִׁ֖ים וַתּוּכָֽל׃
32:29 Said he, “Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel, for you have strivencHeb. saritha, connected with first part of “Israel.” with dOr “God (Elohim, connected with second part of ‘Israel’) and men.”beings divine and human,-d and have prevailed.”
32:29 And he said: ‘Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel; for thou hast striven with God and with men, and hast prevailed.’
ל"ב:כ"ט וַאֲמַר לָא יַעֲקֹב יִתְאֲמַר עוֹד שְׁמָךְ אֶלָּהֵין יִשְׂרָאֵל אֲרֵי רַבְרְבַת קֳדָם יְיָ וְעִם גוּבְרַיָּא וִיכָלְתָּא:
ל"ב:ל׳ וַיִּשְׁאַ֣ל יַעֲקֹ֗ב וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ הַגִּֽידָה־נָּ֣א שְׁמֶ֔ךָ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר לָ֥מָּה זֶּ֖ה תִּשְׁאַ֣ל לִשְׁמִ֑י וַיְבָ֥רֶךְ אֹת֖וֹ שָֽׁם׃
32:30 Jacob asked, “Pray tell me your name.” But he said, “You must not ask my name!” And he took leave of him there.
32:30 And Jacob asked him, and said: ‘Tell me, I pray thee, thy name.’ And he said: ‘Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name?’ And he blessed him there.
ל"ב:ל׳ וּשְׁאֵל יַעֲקֹב וַאֲמַר חַוִּי כְעַן שְׁמָךְ וַאֲמַר לְמָה דְנַן אַתְּ שָׁאֵל לִשְׁמִי וּבָרִיךְ יָתֵיהּ תַּמָּן:

1הַגִּידָה נָּא שְׁמֶךָ. לֶהֱיוֹת שֶׁיַּעֲקֹב יוֹדֵעַ הוּא שֶׁאֵין שֵׁם קָבוּעַ לַמַּלְאָךְ, וְשָׁאַל לַמַּלְאָךְ שְׁמוֹ, וּפֵרֵשׁ כִּי שׁוֹאֲלוֹ עַל שְׁמוֹ אָז בְּאוֹתָהּ שָׁעָה, וְהוּא אָמְרוֹ הַגִּידָה נָּא שְׁמֶךָ פֵּירוּשׁ: עַתָּה מַה שְׁמֶךָ.
הגידה נא שמך, "please tell me your name!" Although Jacob was aware that angels do not have fixed names, he asked him what this particular angel's name was at this particular time.
2לָמָּה זֶּה תִּשְׁאַל וְגוֹ׳. פֵּרוּשׁ, בִּשְׁלָמָא מַה שֶׁשָּׁאַל הַמַּלְאָךְ שְׁמוֹ שֶׁל יַעֲקֹב הוּא לְטַעַם מַה שֶׁאָמַר לוֹ ״לֹא יַעֲקֹב וְגוֹ׳ כִּי אִם יִשְׂרָאֵל״, מַה שֶׁאֵין כֵּן שְׁאֵלָה זוֹ שֶׁל יַעֲקֹב לָמָּה, אִם לוֹמַר לוֹ דָּבָר יֹאמַר אֵלָיו וּבְלֹא סִבַּת שְׁאֵלַת עִנְיָן זֶה. אוֹ יִרְצֶה לָמָּה פֵּרוּשׁ, לְאֵיזֶה עִנְיָן אַתָּה שׁוֹאֵל דָּבָר זֶה שֶׁאוֹדִיעֲךָ שְׁמִי שֶׁאֲנִי נִקְרָא בּוֹ עַתָּה, כֵּיוָן שֶׁאֵין זֶה שֵׁם קָבוּעַ וּבְעֵת אַחֵר יִצְטָרֵךְ לִשְׁאוֹל לִשְׁמִי.
למה זה תשאל לשמי, "Why do you ask after my name?" Whereas it made sense that the angel asked Jacob's name seeing he intended to change it to Israel, or at least, to inform him of that impending change. Jacob's asking the angel for his name did not have such a purpose, however. The angel therefore wanted to know the reason for Jacob's enquiry. The angel may also simply have hinted that there was no point in asking him his present name as it was apt to be changed as soon as he had accomplished his present mission. He would only have to ask him again for his name on a future occasion.
