Genesis 32:31–33:5
ל"ב:ל"א וַיִּקְרָ֧א יַעֲקֹ֛ב שֵׁ֥ם הַמָּק֖וֹם פְּנִיאֵ֑ל כִּֽי־רָאִ֤יתִי אֱלֹהִים֙ פָּנִ֣ים אֶל־פָּנִ֔ים וַתִּנָּצֵ֖ל נַפְשִֽׁי׃
32:31 So Jacob named the place Peniel,eUnderstood as “face of God.” meaning, “I have seen a divine being face to face, yet my life has been preserved.”
32:31 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: ‘for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.’
ל"ב:ל"א וּקְרָא יַעֲקֹב שְׁמָא דְאַתְרָא פְּנִיאֵל אֲרֵי חֲזֵיתִי מַלְאָכַיָּא דַיְיָ אַפִּין בְּאַפִּין וְאִשְׁתְּזָבַת נַפְשִׁי:

1פָּנִים אֶל פָּנִים וְגוֹ׳. טַעַם הַתְּמִיהָה – לֹא שֶׁרָאָה מַלְאָךְ, וַהֲלֹא נִגְלָה אֵלָיו קֹדֶם הָאֱלֹהִים, אֶלָּא שֶׁלָּחַם עִם הַמַּלְאָךְ, וְהוּא אָמְרוֹ ״פָּנִים אֶל פָּנִים״ לְשׁוֹן מִלְחָמָה, עַל דֶּרֶךְ אָמְרוֹ (מלכים ב יד:ח) ״נִתְרָאֶה פָנִים״.
פנים אל פנים, face to face. Jacob's amazement was not due to the fact that he had had an encounter with an angel; he had previously encountered angels. What amazed him was that he had been in a confrontation with an angel. The word פנים אל פנים is a term used in warfare as we know from Kings II 14,8.

32:32 The sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, limping on his hip.
32:32 And the sun rose upon him as he passed over Peniel, and he limped upon his thigh.
ל"ב:ל"ב וּדְנַח לֵיהּ שִׁמְשָׁא כְּמָא דִי עֲבַר יָת פְּנוּאֵל וְהוּא מַטְלַע עַל יַרְכֵּיהּ:

1כַּאֲשֶׁר עָבַר אֶת פְּנוּאֵל. אוּלַי כִּי לֹא יִקְרָא שֵׁם הַמָּקוֹם פְּנִיאֵל אֶלָּא יַעֲקֹב לְבַד, אֲבָל כֹּל חוּץ מִמֶּנּוּ וַאֲפִלּוּ דְּבַר תּוֹרָה תִּקְרָאֵהוּ פְּנוּאֵל, וְכֵן נִקְרָא בְּשׁוֹפְטִים (ח:ח).
כאשר עבר את פנואל, as he passed Pnu-el. Perhaps Jacob was the only one who called that place Pni-el instead of Pnu-el. We find the name Pnue-el also in Judges 8.
ל"ב:ל"ג עַל־כֵּ֡ן לֹֽא־יֹאכְל֨וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל אֶת־גִּ֣יד הַנָּשֶׁ֗ה אֲשֶׁר֙ עַל־כַּ֣ף הַיָּרֵ֔ךְ עַ֖ד הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה כִּ֤י נָגַע֙ בְּכַף־יֶ֣רֶךְ יַעֲקֹ֔ב בְּגִ֖יד הַנָּשֶֽׁה׃
32:33 That is why the children of Israel to this day do not eat the thigh muscle that is on the socket of the hip, since Jacob’s hip socket was wrenched at the thigh muscle.
32:33 Therefore the children of Israel eat not the sinew of the thigh-vein which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day; because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh, even in the sinew of the thigh-vein.
ל"ב:ל"ג עַל כֵּן לָא יֵכְלוּן בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל יָת גִּידָא דְנַשְׁיָא דִּי עַל פְּתֵי יַרְכָּא עַד יוֹמָא הָדֵין אֲרֵי קְרֵיב בִּפְתֵי יַרְכָּא דְיַעֲקֹב בְּגִידָא דְּנַשְׁיָא:

1עַל כֵּן לֹא יֹאכְלוּ וְגוֹ׳. פֵּרוּשׁ: לְצַד שֶׁנִּזְדַּעְזַע הַגִּיד מִמְּקוֹר הַקְּדֻשָּׁה וְשָׁלַט בּוֹ הַקְּלִפָּה, בְּחִינָה זוֹ בְּכָל מָקוֹם שֶׁהִיא נִטְמְאָה, וַאֲסָרָהּ הַבּוֹרֵא כִּי הוּא הַיּוֹדֵעַ. וְתִמְצָא סוֹד בָּזֶה כִּי גִּיד זֶה אֵין בּוֹ טַעַם, וְהוּא סִימָן לִבְחִינַת הַקְּלִפָּה, כִּי אֵין בָּהּ טַעַם כֵּיוָן שֶׁנֶּעֶקְרָה קְדֻשָּׁה מִמֶּנּוּ. וְיֵשׁ בָּזֶה פְּשָׁטִים לוֹמַר, אֶלָּא שֶׁהָעִקָּר כְּמוֹ שֶׁכָּתַבְתִּי.
על כן לא יאכלו בני ישראל את גיד הנשה. This is why the children of Israel do not eat the disjointed sinew, etc. This sinew was dislocated from its holy origin and became subject to dominance by the קליפה ["external forces" in the scheme of the emanations, Ed.]. G'd forbade anything which has thus become defiled wherever it appears. There is a mystical element in this. This sinew does not have a taste, an allusion to its originating in the "external forces." The reason is that it had been uprooted from a holier source.
ל"ג:א׳ וַיִּשָּׂ֨א יַעֲקֹ֜ב עֵינָ֗יו וַיַּרְא֙ וְהִנֵּ֣ה עֵשָׂ֣ו בָּ֔א וְעִמּ֕וֹ אַרְבַּ֥ע מֵא֖וֹת אִ֑ישׁ וַיַּ֣חַץ אֶת־הַיְלָדִ֗ים עַל־לֵאָה֙ וְעַל־רָחֵ֔ל וְעַ֖ל שְׁתֵּ֥י הַשְּׁפָחֽוֹת׃
33:1 Looking up, Jacob saw Esau coming, accompanied by four hundred men. He divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and the two maids,
33:1 And Jacob lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, Esau came, and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children unto Leah, and unto Rachel, and unto the two handmaids.
ל"ג:א׳ וּזְקַף יַעֲקֹב עֵינוֹהִי וַחֲזָא וְהָא עֵשָׂו אֲתָא וְעִמֵּיהּ אַרְבַּע מְאָה גֻּבְרִין וּפַלִּיג יָת בְּנַיָּא עַל לֵאָה וְעַל רָחֵל וְעַל תַּרְתֵּין לְחֵינָתָא:
ל"ג:ב׳ וַיָּ֧שֶׂם אֶת־הַשְּׁפָח֛וֹת וְאֶת־יַלְדֵיהֶ֖ן רִֽאשֹׁנָ֑ה וְאֶת־לֵאָ֤ה וִֽילָדֶ֙יהָ֙ אַחֲרֹנִ֔ים וְאֶת־רָחֵ֥ל וְאֶת־יוֹסֵ֖ף אַחֲרֹנִֽים׃
33:2 putting the maids and their children first, Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Joseph last.
33:2 And he put the handmaids and their children foremost, and Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph hindermost.
ל"ג:ב׳ וְשַׁוִּי יָת לְחֵינָתָא וְיָת בְּנֵיהֶן קַדְמָאִין וְיָת לֵאָה וּבְנָהָא בַּתְרָאִין וְיָת רָחֵל וְיָת יוֹסֵף בַּתְרָאִין:
ל"ג:ג׳ וְה֖וּא עָבַ֣ר לִפְנֵיהֶ֑ם וַיִּשְׁתַּ֤חוּ אַ֙רְצָה֙ שֶׁ֣בַע פְּעָמִ֔ים עַד־גִּשְׁתּ֖וֹ עַד־אָחִֽיו׃
33:3 He himself went on ahead and bowed low to the ground seven times until he was near his brother.
33:3 And he himself passed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.
ל"ג:ג׳ וְהוּא עֲבַר קֳדָמֵיהוֹן וּסְגִיד עַל אַרְעָא שְׁבַע זִמְנִין עַד מִקְרְבֵיהּ עַד (נ"א לְוַת) אֲחוּהִי:
ל"ג:ד׳ וַיָּ֨רָץ עֵשָׂ֤ו לִקְרָאתוֹ֙ וַֽיְחַבְּקֵ֔הוּ וַיִּפֹּ֥ל עַל־צַוָּארָ֖ו וַׄיִּׄשָּׁׄקֵ֑ׄהׄוּׄ וַיִּבְכּֽוּ׃
33:4 Esau ran to greet him. He embraced him and, falling on his neck, he kissed him; and they wept.
33:4 And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him; and they wept.
ל"ג:ד׳ וּרְהַט עֵשָׂו לְקַדָּמוּתֵיהּ וְגַפְּפֵיהּ וּנְפַל עַל צַוְארֵיהּ וְנַשְּׁקֵיהּ וּבְכוֹ:
ל"ג:ה׳ וַיִּשָּׂ֣א אֶת־עֵינָ֗יו וַיַּ֤רְא אֶת־הַנָּשִׁים֙ וְאֶת־הַיְלָדִ֔ים וַיֹּ֖אמֶר מִי־אֵ֣לֶּה לָּ֑ךְ וַיֹּאמַ֕ר הַיְלָדִ֕ים אֲשֶׁר־חָנַ֥ן אֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶת־עַבְדֶּֽךָ׃
33:5 Looking about, he saw the women and the children. “Who,” he asked, “are these with you?” He answered, “The children with whom God has favored your servant.”
33:5 And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and said: ‘Who are these with thee?’ And he said: ‘The children whom God hath graciously given thy servant.’
