מ׳:א׳ וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃

מ׳:ב׳ בְּיוֹם־הַחֹ֥דֶשׁ הָרִאשׁ֖וֹן בְּאֶחָ֣ד לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ תָּקִ֕ים אֶת־מִשְׁכַּ֖ן אֹ֥הֶל מוֹעֵֽד׃

40:2 On the first day of the first month you shall set up the Tabernacle of the Tent of Meeting.

40:2 ’On the first day of the first month shalt thou rear up the tabernacle of the tent of meeting.

מ׳:ב׳ בְּיוֹמָא יַרְחָא קַדְמָאָה בְּחַד לְיַרְחָא תְּקִים יָת מַשְׁכְּנָא מַשְׁכַּן זִמְנָא:

1בְּיוֹם הַחֹדֶשׁ וְגוֹ׳. הֲקָמָה זוֹ הָיְתָה אַחַר שִׁבְעַת יְמֵי מִלּוּאִים לְדִבְרֵיהֶם זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה (במדבר רבה פי״ג), וְכֵן מוֹכִיחִים הַכְּתוּבִים כִּי שִׁבְעַת יְמֵי הַמִּלּוּאִים לֹא נַעֲשָׂה בָּהֶם אֶלָּא מִלּוּאֵי יְדֵי אַהֲרֹן, וְלָזֶה צִוָּה ה׳ מַעֲשֵׂה שִׁבְעַת יְמֵי מִלּוּאִים קֹדֶם מִצְוַת הֲקָמַת הַמִּשְׁכָּן וְהַעֲרָכָתוֹ, וְגַם בְּפָרָשַׁת צַו כְּשֶׁמָּשַׁח אַהֲרֹן וּבָנָיו יוֹם רִאשׁוֹן שֶׁל מִלּוּאִים שָׁם הִזְכִּיר מְשִׁיחַת הַמִּשְׁכָּן וְכֵלָיו, וְלֹא הִזְכִּיר שָׁם הֲקָמַת הַמִּשְׁכָּן וְסִדְרוֹ. הָא לָמַדְתָּ כִּי הַמִּלּוּאִים הָיוּ קֹדֶם הֲקָמַת הַמִּשְׁכָּן וְהַעֲרָכַת כֵּלָיו, וְיוֹם רֹאשׁ חֹדֶשׁ נִיסָן הוּא שֶׁנִּתְקַדֵּשׁ הַמִּשְׁכָּן וְסִדֵּר מֹשֶׁה מַעֲרֶכֶת הַמִּשְׁכָּן וְהִקְרִיב בּוֹ אֶת הָאָמוּר בָּעִנְיָן. הָא לָמַדְתָּ שֶׁלֹּא שִׁמֵּשׁ מֹשֶׁה בַּמִּשְׁכָּן בְּסֵדֶר כָּל הָאָמוּר בְּפָרָשָׁה זוֹ אֶלָּא בְּיוֹם אֶחָד, שֶׁהוּא יוֹם הַשְּׁמִינִי שֶׁל מִלּוּאִים. וַאֲפִלּוּ לְהַסּוֹבְרִים שֶׁכָּל שִׁבְעַת יְמֵי הַמִּלּוּאִים הָיָה מֹשֶׁה בּוֹנֶה מִשְׁכָּן וְסוֹתְרוֹ (ירושלמי יומא א,ה), בְּהֶכְרֵחַ לוֹמַר כִּי מִשְׁכָּן הוּא שֶׁהָיָה בּוֹנֶה וְסוֹתֵר אֲבָל סֵדֶר הֲכָנָתוֹ לֹא הָיְתָה אֶלָּא בְּיוֹם רֹאשׁ חֹדֶשׁ נִיסָן, כָּאָמוּר בָּעִנְיָן ״בְּאֶחָד לַחֹדֶשׁ וְגוֹ׳ וְשַׂמְתָּ שָׁם וְגוֹ׳ וְהֵבֵאתָ אֶת הַשֻּׁלְחָן״ וְגוֹ׳. הֲרֵי כִּי מֵחָדָשׁ הוּא מוֹדִיעוֹ הַהַעֲרָכָה וּמְקוֹם כָּל דָּבָר וְסֵדֶר הַנָּחָתוֹ, וְאִם זֶה לוֹ שִׁבְעַת יָמִים וְהוּא מַעֲרִיךְ, מַה מָקוֹם לְהוֹדִיעַ מֵחָדָשׁ? אֶלָּא וַדַּאי זֶה הַיּוֹם תְּחִלַּת סֵדֶר מַעֲשֵׂה הַמִּשְׁכָּן וְתִקּוּנוֹ, וְהִקְרִיב מֹשֶׁה בּוֹ בַּיּוֹם כָּל הָאָמוּר בָּעִנְיָן בְּמִצְוַת ה׳ אֵלָיו, כָּאָמוּר לְפָנֵינוּ.

ביום החודש הראשון באחד לחודש, on the first day of the first month, etc. The erection of the Tabernacle took place after the seven days of the inaugural sacrifices [as opposed to Jerusalem Talmud Yuma 1,5 according to which Moses erected and dismantled the Tabernacle on each of those seven days, whereas now he erected it permanently. Ed.] A careful perusal of the text both here and in Parshat Tzav reveals that erection of the Tabernacle prior to the offering of the inaugural sacrifices is not mentioned anywhere. It would follow that any sacrificial service Moses performed during those days he did not perform inside the Sanctuary but only on the altar in the courtyard. The Tabernacle was sanctified only on the first day of Nissan of the second year after the Exodus. Even if we were to accept the opinion of those who claim that Moses experimented with putting together and dismantling the Tabernacle on each of the seven days of the inaugural sacrifices, this would refer only to the Tabernacle itself, not its furnishings. Why else would the Torah report that Moses was instructed only on that day to place the various furnishings inside the Tabernacle? Clearly, the משכן became a "going concern" only on the first day of Nissan.

מ׳:ג׳ וְשַׂמְתָּ֣ שָׁ֔ם אֵ֖ת אֲר֣וֹן הָעֵד֑וּת וְסַכֹּתָ֥ עַל־הָאָרֹ֖ן אֶת־הַפָּרֹֽכֶת׃

40:3 Place there the Ark of the Pact, and screen off the ark with the curtain.

40:3 And thou shalt put therein the ark of the testimony, and thou shalt screen the ark with the veil.

מ׳:ג׳ וּתְשַׁוִּי תַמָּן יָת אֲרוֹנָא דְסַהֲדוּתָא וְתַטֵּל עַל אֲרוֹנָא יָת פָּרֻכְתָּא:

וסכת על הארן. לְשׁוֹן הַגָּנָה, שֶׁהֲרֵי מְחִצָּה הָיְתָה:

מ׳:ד׳ וְהֵבֵאתָ֙ אֶת־הַשֻּׁלְחָ֔ן וְעָרַכְתָּ֖ אֶת־עֶרְכּ֑וֹ וְהֵבֵאתָ֙ אֶת־הַמְּנֹרָ֔ה וְהַעֲלֵיתָ֖ אֶת־נֵרֹתֶֽיהָ׃

40:4 Bring in the table and lay out its due setting; bring in the lampstand and light its lamps;

40:4 And thou shalt bring in the table, and set in order the bread that is upon it; and thou shalt bring in the candlestick, and light the lamps thereof.

מ׳:ד׳ וְתָעֵל יָת פָּתוֹרָא וְתַסְדַּר יָת סִדְרֵיהּ וְתָעֵל יָת מְנַרְתָּא וְתַדְלֵק יָת בּוֹצִינָהָא:

וערכת את ערכו. שְׁתַּיִם מַעֲרָכוֹת שֶׁל לֶחֶם הַפָּנִים:

מ׳:ה׳ וְנָתַתָּ֞ה אֶת־מִזְבַּ֤ח הַזָּהָב֙ לִקְטֹ֔רֶת לִפְנֵ֖י אֲר֣וֹן הָעֵדֻ֑ת וְשַׂמְתָּ֛ אֶת־מָסַ֥ךְ הַפֶּ֖תַח לַמִּשְׁכָּֽן׃

40:5 and place the gold altar of incense before the Ark of the Pact. Then put up the screen for the entrance of the Tabernacle.

40:5 And thou shalt set the golden altar for incense before the ark of the testimony, and put the screen of the door to the tabernacle.

מ׳:ה׳ וְתִתֵּן יָת מַדְבְּחָא דְדַהֲבָא לִקְטֹרֶת בּוּסְמַיָּא קֳדָם אֲרוֹנָא דְסַהֲדוּתָא וּתְשַׁוִּי יָת פְּרָסָא דְתַרְעָא לְמַשְׁכְּנָא:

מ׳:ו׳ וְנָ֣תַתָּ֔ה אֵ֖ת מִזְבַּ֣ח הָעֹלָ֑ה לִפְנֵ֕י פֶּ֖תַח מִשְׁכַּ֥ן אֹֽהֶל־מוֹעֵֽד׃

40:6 You shall place the altar of burnt offering before the entrance of the Tabernacle of the Tent of Meeting.

40:6 And thou shalt set the altar of burnt-offering before the door of the tabernacle of the tent of meeting.

מ׳:ו׳ וְתִתֵּן יָת מַדְבְּחָא דַעֲלָתָא קֳדָם תְּרַע מַשְׁכְּנָא מַשְׁכַּן זִמְנָא:

מ׳:ז׳ וְנָֽתַתָּ֙ אֶת־הַכִּיֹּ֔ר בֵּֽין־אֹ֥הֶל מוֹעֵ֖ד וּבֵ֣ין הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ וְנָתַתָּ֥ שָׁ֖ם מָֽיִם׃

40:7 Place the laver between the Tent of Meeting and the altar, and put water in it.

40:7 And thou shalt set the laver between the tent of meeting and the altar, and shalt put water therein.

מ׳:ז׳ וְתִתֵּן יָת כִּיּוֹרָא בֵּין מַשְׁכַּן זִמְנָא וּבֵין מַדְבְּחָא וְתִתֵּן תַּמָּן מַיָּא:

מ׳:ח׳ וְשַׂמְתָּ֥ אֶת־הֶחָצֵ֖ר סָבִ֑יב וְנָ֣תַתָּ֔ אֶת־מָסַ֖ךְ שַׁ֥עַר הֶחָצֵֽר׃

40:8 Set up the enclosure round about, and put in place the screen for the gate of the enclosure.

40:8 And thou shalt set up the court round about, and hang up the screen of the gate of the court.

מ׳:ח׳ וּתְשַׁוֵּי יָת דַּרְתָּא סְחוֹר סְחוֹר וְתִתֵּן יָת פְּרָסָא דִּתְרַע דַּרְתָּא:

מ׳:ט׳ וְלָקַחְתָּ֙ אֶת־שֶׁ֣מֶן הַמִּשְׁחָ֔ה וּמָשַׁחְתָּ֥ אֶת־הַמִּשְׁכָּ֖ן וְאֶת־כָּל־אֲשֶׁר־בּ֑וֹ וְקִדַּשְׁתָּ֥ אֹת֛וֹ וְאֶת־כָּל־כֵּלָ֖יו וְהָ֥יָה קֹֽדֶשׁ׃

40:9 You shall take the anointing oil and anoint the Tabernacle and all that is in it to consecrate it and all its furnishings, so that it shall be holy.

40:9 And thou shalt take the anointing oil, and anoint the tabernacle, and all that is therein, and shalt hallow it, and all the furniture thereof; and it shall be holy.

מ׳:ט׳ וְתִסַּב יָת מִשְׁחָא דִרְבוּתָא וּתְרַבֵּי יָת מַשְׁכְּנָא וְיָת כָּל דִּי בֵיהּ וּתְקַדֵּשׁ יָתֵיהּ וְיָת כָּל מָנוֹהִי וִיהֵי קוּדְשָׁא:

מ׳:י׳ וּמָשַׁחְתָּ֛ אֶת־מִזְבַּ֥ח הָעֹלָ֖ה וְאֶת־כָּל־כֵּלָ֑יו וְקִדַּשְׁתָּ֙ אֶת־הַמִּזְבֵּ֔חַ וְהָיָ֥ה הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ קֹ֥דֶשׁ קָֽדָשִֽׁים׃

40:10 Then anoint the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils to consecrate the altar, so that the altar shall be most holy.

40:10 And thou shalt anoint the altar of burnt-offering, and all its vessels, and sanctify the altar; and the altar shall be most holy.

מ׳:י׳ וּתְרַבֵּי יָת מַדְבְּחָא דַעֲלָתָא וְיָת כָּל מָנוֹהִי וּתְקַדֵּשׁ יָת מַדְבְּחָא וִיהֵי מַדְבְּחָא קֹדֶשׁ קוּדְשִׁין:

מ׳:י"א וּמָשַׁחְתָּ֥ אֶת־הַכִּיֹּ֖ר וְאֶת־כַּנּ֑וֹ וְקִדַּשְׁתָּ֖ אֹתֽוֹ׃

40:11 And anoint the laver and its stand to consecrate it.

40:11 And thou shalt anoint the laver and its base, and sanctify it.

מ׳:י"א וּתְרַבֵּי יָת כִּיּוֹרָא וְיָת בְּסִיסֵיהּ וּתְקַדֵּשׁ יָתֵיהּ:

מ׳:י"ב וְהִקְרַבְתָּ֤ אֶֽת־אַהֲרֹן֙ וְאֶת־בָּנָ֔יו אֶל־פֶּ֖תַח אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֑ד וְרָחַצְתָּ֥ אֹתָ֖ם בַּמָּֽיִם׃

40:12 You shall bring Aaron and his sons forward to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting and wash them with the water.

40:12 And thou shalt bring Aaron and his sons unto the door of the tent of meeting, and shalt wash them with water.

מ׳:י"ב וּתְקָרֵב יָת אַהֲרֹן וְיָת בְּנוֹהִי לִתְרַע מַשְׁכַּן זִמְנָא וְתַסְחֵי יָתְהוֹן בְּמַיָּא:

מ׳:י"ג וְהִלְבַּשְׁתָּ֙ אֶֽת־אַהֲרֹ֔ן אֵ֖ת בִּגְדֵ֣י הַקֹּ֑דֶשׁ וּמָשַׁחְתָּ֥ אֹת֛וֹ וְקִדַּשְׁתָּ֥ אֹת֖וֹ וְכִהֵ֥ן לִֽי׃

40:13 Put the sacral vestments on Aaron, and anoint him and consecrate him, that he may serve Me as priest.

40:13 And thou shalt put upon Aaron the holy garments; and thou shalt anoint him, and sanctify him, that he may minister unto Me in the priest’s office.

מ׳:י"ג וְתַלְבֵּשׁ יָת אַהֲרֹן יָת לְבוּשֵׁי קוּדְשָׁא וּתְרַבֵּי יָתֵיהּ וּתְקַדֵּשׁ יָתֵיהּ וִישַׁמֵּשׁ קֳדָמָי:

מ׳:י"ד וְאֶת־בָּנָ֖יו תַּקְרִ֑יב וְהִלְבַּשְׁתָּ֥ אֹתָ֖ם כֻּתֳּנֹֽת׃

40:14 Then bring his sons forward, put tunics on them,

40:14 And thou shalt bring his sons, and put tunics upon them.

מ׳:י"ד וְיָת בְּנוֹהִי תְּקָרֵב וְתַלְבֵּשׁ יָתְהוֹן כִּתּוּנִין:

מ׳:ט"ו וּמָשַׁחְתָּ֣ אֹתָ֗ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר מָשַׁ֙חְתָּ֙ אֶת־אֲבִיהֶ֔ם וְכִהֲנ֖וּ לִ֑י וְ֠הָיְתָה לִהְיֹ֨ת לָהֶ֧ם מָשְׁחָתָ֛ם לִכְהֻנַּ֥ת עוֹלָ֖ם לְדֹרֹתָֽם׃

40:15 and anoint them as you have anointed their father, that they may serve Me as priests. This their anointing shall serve them for everlasting priesthood throughout the ages.

40:15 And thou shalt anoint them, as thou didst anoint their father, that they may minister unto Me in the priest’s office; and their anointing shall be to them for an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations.’

מ׳:ט"ו וּתְרַבֵּי יָתְהוֹן כְּמָא דִי רַבֵּיתָא יָת אֲבוּהוֹן וִישַׁמְּשׁוּן קֳדָמָי וּתְהֵי לְמֵהֶוֵי לְהוֹן רְבוּתְהוֹן לְכַהֲנוּת עָלָם לְדָרֵיהוֹן:

מ׳:ט"ז וַיַּ֖עַשׂ מֹשֶׁ֑ה כְּ֠כֹל אֲשֶׁ֨ר צִוָּ֧ה יְהוָ֛ה אֹת֖וֹ כֵּ֥ן עָשָֽׂה׃ (ס)

40:16 This Moses did; just as the LORD had commanded him, so he did.

40:16 Thus did Moses; according to all that the LORD commanded him, so did he.

מ׳:ט"ז וַעֲבַד משֶׁה כְּכֹל דִּי פַּקִּיד יְיָ יָתֵיהּ כֵּן עֲבָד:
